Player Notes

  • Pivotal hold in win
Bernardino allowed one walk and struck out four over two scoreless innings to pick up a hold in Tuesday's 8-3 win over Baltimore.

Advice: The game was still tight when Bernardino extricated himself and starter Brayan Bello from a bases-loaded, none-out predicament in the sixth inning. After he loaded the bases with a walk to the first batter faced, the left-hander got a strikeout, a groundout to the pitcher and another strikeout to preserve Boston's 4-3 lead. Bernardino then pitched a perfect seventh inning before Boston's bats piled on insurance runs. It was a masterful performance from Bernardino, who has a 0.78 ERA and 0.83 WHIP over 20 appearances (23 innings). Rotowire.com 8 minutes ago
  • Bullpen spoils win Tuesday
Brown did not factor into the decision Tuesday against the Mariners, allowing one run on four hits and no walks while striking out nine in six innings.

Advice: Brown had arguably his best performance of the season, tossing his third quality start while setting a new season-high with nine punchouts. The Mariners scratched across a run on him in the first inning, and from there he was dominant, allowing just one runner to reach scoring position while retiring the final 11 he faced in order. Tuesday was also just the second time this season he went without walking a batter. It was certainly an encouraging outing after it's been a mixed bag of results all year from the 25-year-old, who now owns a 6.39 ERA, 1.64 WHIP and 53:24 K:BB in 49.1 innings. Brown will look to pick up a win over the weekend when the Astros host Minnesota. Rotowire.com 16 minutes ago
  • Spencer Howard goes four scoreless in relief
Spencer Howard shut out the Phillies for four innings in his bulk role Tuesday.

Advice: It sounded like Howard would be the second pitcher in tonight, but he instead entered in the fourth after Erik Miller and Taylor Rogers combined on three scoreless innings. He then kept his old team scoreless through the seventh. It didn’t get him a win, but he might have earned a chance to stick around. The 27-year-old was making his 2024 MLB debut after posting a 5.90 ERA in 10 starts for Sacramento. Rotoworld Yesterday, 11:39 pm
  • Zack Wheeler shuts down Giants in no-decision
Zack Wheeler blanked the Giants for six innings, allowing just two hits, in a no-decision Tuesday.

Advice: Wheeler wasn’t at his most efficient tonight, but that didn’t really matter, since the Phillies went 10 innings without scoring. It’s Wheeler’s ninth quality start in 12 tries, and he lowered his ERA to 2.32. Still, the Phillies bizarrely are only 6-6 when he pitches, compared to 32-12 the rest of the time. • Luis Castillo delivers eighth quality start
Luis Castillo threw six innings of two-run ball against the Astros on Tuesday.

Advice: It’s the fourth straight start in which Castillo has allowed exactly two runs. He hasn’t given up more than two earned runs since his third start of the year on April 8, and his ERA is down to 3.28. He’ll face the Angels next. Rotoworld Yesterday, 11:01 pm
