    • Taylor Ward returns to lineup at DH on Thursday
Taylor Ward (back) is in the lineup for Thursday’s series finale against the Diamondbacks.

Advice: Ward is back at designated hitter and batting third on Thursday evening following a one-game absence for precautionary reasons due to lower back tightness. The 30-year-old slugger, who has 12 homers and two steals in 65 games this season, has been the subject of trade rumors over the last few weeks and could wind up being moved in the coming weeks. • Nearly ready to take swings
Cardinals manager Oliver Marmol said Thursday that Nootbaar (oblique) continues to take part in "rotational work" and could resume swinging a bat this weekend, John Denton of MLB.com reports.

Advice: The Cardinals will presumably ease Nootbaar into swinging by having him hit off a tee or hit soft-toss throws before he eventually gains clearance to hit against higher-velocity pitching. In addition to being able to hit without discomfort, Nootbaar, who has been on the injured list since May 31 with a left oblique strain, will also need to prove that the injury doesn't compromise him when he runs the bases or plays the outfield. He still appears to be at least a couple weeks away from being a realistic option to rejoin the Cardinals, and Nootbaar will presumably need to go out on a minor-league rehab assignment prior to being activated. • Jazz Chisholm Jr. has two hits in loss to Mets
Jazz Chisholm Jr. went 2-for-4 and drove in a run on Wednesday night as the Marlins fell to the Mets at Citi Field.

Advice: The dynamic 26-year-old smacked a run-scoring single off of David Peterson in the fifth inning that pulled the Marlins to within a run at 5-4. That would wind up being the extent of their scoring in the contest. With his two-hit effort, Chisholm is now hitting .250/.318/.425 to go along with nine homers, 32 RBI and 12 stolen bases. • Sitting Wednesday
Ward (back) isn't in the Angels' lineup for Wednesday's game versus the Diamondbacks, Rhett Bollinger of MLB.com reports.

Advice: Lower-back tightness caused Ward to make an early exit from Tuesday's loss, though the Angels labeled his removal as precautionary. He'll remain sidelined Wednesday while Kevin Pillar starts in left field, batting third. Rotowire.com Wednesday, 3:32 pm

    • Taylor Ward (back) held out of lineup on Wednesday
Taylor Ward (back) was held out of the Angels’ starting lineup for Wednesday evening’s contest against the Diamondbacks.

Advice: The 30-year-old slugger was pulled from Tuesday’s ballgame — as a precautionary measure — due to tightness in his lower back. He’s still considered day-to-day and there haven’t been any rumblings about him requiring a stint on the injured list. Kevin Pillar will start in his place and will bat third for the Halos against Slade Cecconi and the Diamondbacks on Wednesday night in Arizona. Rotoworld Wednesday, 3:30 pm

    • Kyle Tucker (shin) won’t be ready Friday
Astros manager Joe Espada said Kyle Tucker won’t return from the IL when first eligible on Friday.

Advice: Espada said Tucker hasn’t been ruled out for the entire weekend, but Friday is off the table. Trey Cabbage has been picking up extra at-bats in place of Tucker, who fouled a ball off his shin last week. Rotoworld Wednesday, 11:20 am

    • Unlikely to return Friday
The Astros announced Wednesday that Tucker (shin) isn't expected to be ready to return from the 10-day injured list Friday, Brian McTaggart of MLB.com reports.

Advice: Tucker is feeling better as he works his way back from a bruised right shin, but he hasn't yet resumed baseball activities and won't be ready for activation when first eligible. The Astros have mostly been using Trey Cabbage in right field against right-handers and Chas McCormick versus lefties since Tucker was shut down with the injury. Rotowire.com Wednesday, 10:50 am

    • Removed with back tightness
Ward was removed from Tuesday's game against Arizona due to lower-back tightness.

Advice: The Angels described Ward's removal as precautionary, so it's unlikely he's dealing with a serious injury. The 30-year-old outfielder had gone 2-for-2 with a solo home run, an RBI double and a walk before leaving in the eighth inning, and he's now slashing .253/.331/.452 with 12 homers and 36 RBI on the season. • Taylor Ward leaves game with lower back tightness
Taylor Ward left Tuesday’s game for precautionary purposes due to lower back tightness.

Advice: Ward was lifted for a pinch-hitter in the rout after homering, doubling and walking in three plate appearances. He’s day-to-day. If he can’t play Wednesday, then Kevin Pillar figures to get a start against a right-hander. Rotoworld Tuesday, 9:56 pm
