  • Kemp launches two-run homer in loss
Matt Kemp went 2-for-4 with a two-run homer and two runs scored in Monday's loss to the Nationals.

Advice: Kemp now has three multi-hit games in a row and has reached base in 10 straight. The resurgent outfielder is batting .306 with nine home runs and 31 RBI in 41 games since the All-Star break. He had eight home runs and 35 RBI in 86 games during the first half.

  • Kluber allows three home runs against Tigers
Corey Kluber lasted just 2 1/3 innings while surrendering five runs to the Tigers on Monday.

Advice: Well that was unexpected. Kluber struck out two, walked two and allowed seven hits, but the home runs were his real undoing. He gave up a two-run home run to Miguel Cabrera in the first inning, then served up back-to-back home runs to Victor Martinez (two-run blast) and J.D. Martinez (solo shot) with two outs in the third, driving him from the game. Kluber had only given up two home runs total over his previous nine starts combined. He'll just have to put blinders on to this one. On the year, he's been one of the best pitchers in baseball, having struck out 215 in 195+ innings to go with a 2.72 ERA and 1.13 WHIP. He'll look for better results when he faces the White Sox in his next start.

  • Grandal with two hits in win over D-backs
Yasmani Grandal went 2-for-5 on Monday against the Diamondbacks.

Advice: Both hits were singles. Grandal also scored a run. Despite having a name that reminds one of reading 'Beowulf' in high school, Grandal has not shown the ability to set fear into the hearts of men this season. He has mostly been slayed by his starting pitching foes, slashing just .211/.306/.370.

  • Neil Wagner designated for assignment
Blue Jays designated RHP Neil Wagner for assignment.

Advice: Wagner is now off the 40-man roster. The right-hander underwent Tommy John surgery last month.

  • Mike Napoli hits one over the boards
Mike Napoli smacked a solo homer in Monday's loss to the Rays.

Advice: The longball came in the fourth inning off of Drew Smyly and cut the lead to one before Yoenis Cespedes eventually knotted things up in the eighth with an RBI single. The Red Sox went on to lose in extras. Napoli has just 17 homers and 51 RBI in an injury-shortened season, but he sports a pretty nice .251/.371/.433 batting line.

  • Nationals recall Xavier Cedeno from Triple-A
Nationals recalled LHP Xavier Cedeno from Triple-A Syracuse.

Advice: Cedeno made three scoreless appearances earlier this season out of the Nationals' bullpen, and he's back now to provide left-handed relief depth for the final month.
  • A's DFA left-handed reliever Joe Savery
Athletics designated LHP Joe Savery for assignment.

Advice: Savery has posted good numbers this year at Triple-A and owns a decent 3.83 career ERA in the majors, but the A's needed to open up a 40-man roster spot to improve their position player depth for the stretch run.

  • Dodgers recall Tim Federowicz from AAA
Dodgers recalled C Tim Federowicz from Triple-A Albuquerque.

Advice: Federowicz will be the Dodgers' emergency third catcher for the final month of the regular season. He is 8-for-61 (.131) in 18 games this year in the majors.

  • Rockies transfer Boone Logan to 60-day DL
Rockies transferred LHP Boone Logan from the 15-day disabled list to the 60-day disabled list.

Advice: Logan is done for 2014 with a lingering left elbow injury. He posted a rough 6.84 ERA and 1.68 WHIP in 35 appearances this season for the Rockies. It was the first year of a rough-looking three-year, $16.5 million deal.

  • Blue Jays promote LHP prospect Daniel Norris
Blue Jays purchased the contract of LHP Daniel Norris from Triple-A Buffalo.

Advice: Norris has reemerged as a top pitching prospect after a disappointing 2013 and will be a weapon in long relief down the stretch for Toronto, much like Aaron Sanchez. Norris, 21, posted a 2.53 ERA, 1.12 WHIP, and 163/43 K/BB ratio in 124 2/3 innings this season between three different levels of the Blue Jays' minor league system.
  • Aaron Sanchez may see more save chances
Aaron Sanchez could get more multi-inning save chances down the stretch for the Blue Jays.

Advice: Sanchez has been dominant out of the Toronto bullpen since his July 22 promotion and Jays closer Casey Janssen is in a bit of a slump. "We're trying to maximize who [Sanchez] is," manager John Gibbons said this weekend. "So if he goes out there and he's got one inning under his belt and it's easy, we're going to ride him." Sanchez earned six outs for his first major league save Saturday against the Yankees.

  • Brewers recall Logan Schafer from Triple-A
Brewers recalled OF Logan Schafer to Triple-A Nashville.

Advice: Schafer will give the Brewers some outfield depth for the stretch run. He is a pretty good defender but has hit just .210/.280/.325 in 211 career major league games.

  • Denorfia (neck) goes 0-for-4 in return Sun.
Chris Denorfia (neck) went 0-for-4 with three strikeouts in his return to action on Sunday.

Advice: Denorfia had been out since Tuesday because of stiffness in his neck. The 34-year-old outfielder is batting just .224/.250/.286 in 52 plate appearances since being traded to the Mariners at the July 31 deadline.

  • Danny Duffy fans six Indians in no-decision
Danny Duffy delivered a strong start in a no-decision against the Indians on Sunday, allowing two runs (one earned) on five hits over 6 2/3 innings.

Advice: Duffy struck out six on the night while walking three. He certainly pitched well enough to earn his ninth victory in this one, but his defense and the offense behind him didn't do him any favors. He'll carry an outstanding 2.42 ERA, 1.08 WHIP and 108/50 K/BB ratio into Saturday's start against the Yankees in New York.

  • Kemp has RBI, run scored in win over Padres
Matt Kemp went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored in a win over the Padres on Sunday.

Advice: Kemp has a modest eight-game hitting streak going, one in which he's 11-for-32 (.344) with four doubles, eight RBI and three runs scored. The outfielder is batting .279/.345/.468 overall.

  • Wei-Yin Chen fans seven Twins for 14th win
Wei-Yin Chen struck out seven while allowing four runs over 6 2/3 innings in Sunday's win over the Twins.

Advice: Chen gave up a two-run homer to Trevor Plouffe in the fourth, one of eight hits allowed on the afternoon. Chen has been plenty good this season, owning a 3.83 ERA through 26 starts, but the fact that he's among the league leaders in wins at 14-4 speaks to the fluky nature of the statistic. Even so, Chen and the Orioles will surely take it. The left-hander will square off with the Rays in Tampa on Friday.

  • Aaron Sanchez notches first career save
Aaron Sanchez recorded six outs against the Yankees on Saturday for his first major league save.

Advice: Inheriting a 2-0 lead from Drew Hutchison, Sanchez struck out two out of the three batters he faced in the eighth inning before coming back out for the ninth. Struggling closer Casey Janssen was warming in the bullpen during the inning and might have come in if he got into trouble. It didn't happen, as Sanchez sat the Yankees down in order in the ninth, including a strikeout looking to Brian McCann to end it. Sanchez owns a 1.66 ERA and 20/3 K/BB ratio over his first 21 2/3 innings in the majors.

  • Grandal hits walk-off RBI single in the 12th
Yasmani Grandal hit a walk-off RBI single in the 12th inning to help the Padres overcome the Dodgers on Friday.

Advice: Grandal was 0-for-4 with three strikeouts in the game prior to his single. The 25-year-old has otherwise had a tough season, slashing .210/.309/.372 with 11 home runs and 34 RBI in 337 plate appearances.

  • Kemp goes 1-for-3 with a 2B, walk, 2 RBI
Matt Kemp went 1-for-3 with a double, walk, and two RBI in Wednesday's 3-1 win against the Diamondbacks.

Advice: Kemp was 6-for-29 (.207) in his last nine games prior to Tuesday (entering that day's game with a .226/.277/.440 slash line in August), but has reached base five times in nine plate appearances over the past 48 hours. He's also got seven RBI in his last five contests.

  • Corey Kluber gives up three runs in loss
Corey Kluber took a second straight loss after giving up three runs in 6 1/3 innings Wednesday against the White Sox.

Advice: If Kluber is a little off at the moment, it's only a little; he's still turned in eight straight quality starts with at least seven strikeouts in all of them. He fanned eight tonight, but he also gave up nine hits, four of them going for extra bases.

  • Rockies place Boone Logan on 15-day DL
Rockies placed LHP Boone Logan on the 15-day disabled list with left elbow inflammation.

Advice: Logan owns a rough 6.84 ERA and 1.68 WHIP in 35 appearances this season out of the Colorado bullpen and might not make it back before the Rockies close up shop at the end of September. Logan's three-year, $16.5 million contract is off to a horrific start.

  • Wei-Yin Chen optioned to Gulf Coast League

  • Kemp bangs out a homer in win versus Snakes
Matt Kemp singled, homered and walked in Tuesday's 9-5 victory over the Diamondbacks.

Advice: Kemp finished 2-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBI. He has leveled off a bit since a dominant June (.900 OPS) and July (.894), coming into tonight with a mediocre .226/.277/.440 slash line in August. Fortunately for his owners, the power hasn't disappeared even as Kemp has struggled to get on base. Perhaps tonight's performance will shake him out of his mini funk.

  • Napoli slugs three-run homer in a 7-run 11th
Mike Napoli went 2-for-5 with an 11th-inning three-run home run as the Red Sox defeated the Blue Jays on Tuesday.

Advice: Napoli crushed a Sergio Santos offering into the upper deck in left field at the Rogers Centre, giving the Red Sox a five-run 11th inning to that point. They would tack on another pair of runs. Napoli has hit 16 home runs, knocked in 50, and posted a .259/.381/.441 slash line on the season.
    Tuesday, 8:54 pm
  • Chen fails to make it through the fifth frame
Wei-Yin Chen got a no-decision despite failing to make it through the fifth inning as the Orioles defeated the Rays 4-2 on Tuesday.

Advice: Chen didn't have his best stuff on Tuesday, failing to record a strikeout on any of the 22 batters he faced. Overall, he yielded seven hits and three walks. He was lucky to have only allowed the two runs, as Brad Brach bailed him out to finish off the fifth inning. Chen has a 3.76 ERA, a 1.25 WHIP, and a 109/28 K/BB ratio. The lefty, still 13-4, will match up against the Twins at home on Tuesday in his next start.
    Tuesday, 8:37 pm
  • Duffy surrenders one run over 6 2/3 innings
Danny Duffy allowed one run over 6 2/3 innings in a no-decision against the Twins on Tuesday.

Advice: Duffy and Ricky Nolasco were locked in a pitcher's duel, naturally, that kept Duffy from earning his ninth win. The southpaw gave up four hits and walked two in the outing and actually left in line for the loss before Alex Gordon's walk-off home run. As it is, Duffy remains 8-11 with a 2.47 ERA and 1.07 WHIP heading into Sunday's start against the Indians.
    Tuesday, 8:18 pm
  • Chris Denorfia scratched with stiff neck
Chris Denorfia was scratched from Tuesday's lineup with a stiff neck.

Advice: Denorfia should be fine in a day or two. Endy Chavez is taking Denorfia's spot in right field.
    Tuesday, 4:35 pm
  • Grandal homers, drives in four to top D'backs
Yasmani Grandal homered and had four RBI, and the Padres beat the Diamondbacks 7-4 on Sunday.

Advice: Grandal drove in a run with a sacrifice fly in the first inning before swatting a three-run homer in the fifth. The home run was his 11th of the season. Despite the occasional power, it's been a forgettable year for the 25-year-old, who is hitting .204/.302/.376.

Mike Napoli is starting at first base on Saturday after missing three games with back spasms.

Advice: Napoli is batting fifth against the Mariners.
    Aug 23, 7:34 am
  • Mike Napoli (back) still out on Friday
Mike Napoli (back) remained out of the Red Sox' lineup Friday.

Advice: He's now missed the last three games with back spasms, but Boston is hopeful he'll be ready to go on Saturday. Daniel Nava is at first base in Napoli's place Friday.
