    • Ryan Vogelsong was diagnosed with a fractured right hand.
Advice: Brutal news for Vogelsong, who tossed five scoreless frames Monday against the Nationals before he was hit in the hand with a pitch while swinging the bat. Vogelsong's wife, Nicole, wrote on Twitter that he has a dislocated joint in the pinky finger of his throwing hand and it's broken above and below his finger. He'll have surgery Tuesday and is expected to miss around six weeks. The Giants don't have an obvious alternative in the minors, so Chad Gaudin is the likely replacement in the starting rotation.

    • Ryan Vogelsong will make his next scheduled start on Monday against the Nationals.
Advice: Giants manager Bruce Bochy was considering replacing Vogelsong and his 8.06 ERA, but he'll give him at least one more shot. "This guy has done a lot," the skipper said. "He's earned some things, including a longer leash." The fact that the Giants' best option to replace Vogelsong is likely long reliever Chad Gaudin surely played into Bochy's decision. Vogelsong will obviously be a sketchy fantasy play Monday.

    • Giants manager Bruce Bochy said Ryan Vogelsong is not guaranteed to take his scheduled turn in the rotation on Monday.
Advice: Vogelsong was a disaster again on Wednesday in Toronto, allowing eight runs -- three earned -- over just two innings. He sports an unsightly 8.06 ERA and 1.84 WHIP on the season, and this is the second occasion where Bochy has indicated that the righty could be bumped from the rotation. The Giants will make a decision in the next few days.

    • Jon Lester yielded six runs -- five earned -- in six innings Monday against the White Sox to take his first loss of the season.
Advice: Lester, who entered 6-0, has always had problems with the White Sox. He's now 4-5 with a 5.43 ERA in 10 career starts against the team. He's 87-44 with a 3.64 ERA against everyone else.

    • Jon Lester allowed two runs over seven innings as the Red Sox defeated the Rays 9-2 on Wednesday.
Advice: The start came on the heels of Lester's one-hit gem against the Blue Jays his last time out. The southpaw wasn't quite up to that standard Wednesday, but he was still plenty good enough to get the win. He's now 6-0 with a 2.72 ERA and is enjoying a bounce-back campaign from his down 2012. His next start will come Monday against the White Sox.

    • Shelby Miller coughed up three runs on five hits over 5 2/3 innings in the Cardinals' loss to the Padres Monday.
Advice: He struck out five and walked three. It was the second consecutive start in which Miller labored and was pulled after 5 2/3 innings, tallying 96 pitches against the Mets on Wednesday and 107 this evening. Undoubtedly, Miller must learn how to be more efficient. That will come in time. He already has down the dominate-major-league-brutes thing, posting a 1.74 ERA and 0.93 WHIP over nine starts.

    • Shelby Miller tossed 5 2/3 scoreless innings in the Cardinals' 4-2 win over the Mets on Wednesday.
Advice: Miller needed 96 pitches to get through those five-plus frames and was left with a no-decision, but all in all it was another dominant outing from the 22-year-old. He held the Mets to four hits and one walk while striking out six and now boasts a 1.40 ERA, 0.88 WHIP and 57/12 K/BB ratio in 51 1/3 innings this season. The talented young right-hander will try to keep it rolling next week in San Diego.

    • Jason Marquis limited the Cardinals to two runs -- one earned -- on three hits over six innings to improve to 6-2 on Monday.
Advice: Marquis has won each of his last five trips to the bump and has been one of baseball's best starters over that stretch. We aren't here to pimp Marquis, however, as he's benefited from smoke and mirrors and his home park perhaps more than any pitcher in the game. Marquis' 28 walks lead the National League. And that five-game winning streak? He posted a hideous 17/18 K/BB rate over 31 2/3 innings during that stretch. This house of cards is about to topple and you'd be wise to identify the sucker in your league to pay for Marquis' 6-2 record and 3.27 ERA before it does.

    • Patrick Corbin moved to 7-0 by pitching a three-hitter and striking out 10 as the Diamondbacks topped the Rockies 5-1 on Monday.
Advice: Corbin's April could have been written off as something of a fluke after he went 3-0 with a 1.91 ERA. However, he's now 4-0 with a 0.92 ERA in May. It's a pretty amazing transformation for a guy who went 6-8 with a 4.54 ERA and 14 homers allowed in 107 innings last year.

    • Patrick Corbin pitched three-hit ball for seven innings in the Diamondbacks' 2-0 win over the Braves on Tuesday.
Advice: Corbin walked a season-high five batters tonight, but it didn't hurt him as he limited Atlanta's lineup to a double and two singles. He's gone eight straight starts this year without allowing more than two runs. If not for two J.J. Putz blown saves, he'd be 8-0 at the moment.

Advice: Colon walked as many batters tonight (two) as he did in his first eight starts combined, but he had his best outing in a month anyway, winning for the first time since April 23. He's 4-2 with a 4.31 ERA overall.

    • Dylan Axelrod held the Red Sox to two runs and four hits in six innings to pick up a win Monday.
Advice: It's just Axelrod's second win in nine outings this season, but he's given the White Sox five quality starts, plus two more in which he was pulled in the sixth having allowed three or fewer runs. He's now probably moved back ahead of Hector Santiago with John Danks due back and a rotation spot on the line.

  • Wed, May 15
    • Dylan Axelrod finally notched his first win after allowing three runs and nine hits in 5 1/3 innings Wednesday against the Twins.
Advice: Axelrod has pitched better than this several times this year, but he never received run support like he did today in what turned out to be a 9-4 victory for the White Sox. His future in the rotation is in doubt with John Danks on the way back. With a 4.27 ERA and a 1.32 WHIP, he hasn't been bad so far. Still, Hector Santiago would seem to have more upside as a starter.

    • Shaun Marcum fell to 0-5 after allowing four runs in six innings Monday against the Reds.
Advice: Marcum bounced back nicely from a three-run first and ended up striking out a season-high seven. Alas, it wasn't enough with the Mets managing just three runs on the night. Marcum will get the Braves next, making him a weak play in NL-only leagues.

    • Shaun Marcum allowed three runs -- two earned -- over 6 2/3 innings Wednesday in a loss to the Cardinals.
Advice: It was Marcum's best start of the season by far, though he wound up taking the loss. He scattered four singles and a double while issuing only one walk and striking out three. The right-hander will carry an 0-4 record, 6.75 ERA and 1.69 WHIP into his next start against the Reds.

    • Jeff Francis (groin) will throw a bullpen session on Tuesday.
Advice: It will be the first time he's thrown from the bump since landing on the disabled list. Francis' groin isn't fully healed, but he shouldn't be out too much longer as long as he continues to progress. Whether he'll have a rotation spot once healthy remains to be seen.

Advice: It was reported previously that Francis tweaked his knee during Tuesday's start, but apparently his groin is the issue. • Kevin Correia surrendered five runs in four innings Monday in a loss to the Braves.
Advice: At least he'll always have April; Correia has seen his ERA jump from 2.23 to 3.90 while giving up 15 runs in 22 1/3 innings during May. He shouldn't have any fantasy value over the remainder of the season.

  • Wed, May 15
    • Kevin Correia allowed four runs over seven innings as the Twins lost to the White Sox on Tuesday.
Advice: Correia has been one of the surprises of the young season, as Tuesday was just the second time all season he'd allowed more than three runs in a start. The right-hander surrendered nine hits, including two home runs, while striking out just two in the outing. His season ERA is still just 3.35, but his low strikeout totals and past history tell us danger lies ahead for the veteran. We're still laying off outside of AL-only leagues. He'll next take the bump against the Braves on Monday.

    • Jake Odorizzi gave up three runs in five innings in his Rays' debut Monday against the Indians.
Advice: Odorizzi allowed two runs in the first inning and one in the second, but he settled down from there and was able to keep the Rays in the ballgame. He gave up five hits and just one walk while striking out six batters. The 23-year-old right-hander is worth a shot in AL-only and deeper mixed leagues while David Price is sidelined, though he has a tough matchup against the Yankees this weekend.

    • Rays manager Joe Maddon said he planned to have Jake Odorizzi make all of the starts in place of the injured David Price (triceps).
Advice: It could possibly only be a couple starts, as the Rays are optimistic that Price will not need to miss much time. Odorizzi will make his Rays' debut on Tuesday against the Blue Jays. He's worth a shot in deeper mixed leagues.

Advice: The move won't be made official until Sunday, but the Rays have confirmed what was suspected since David Price (triceps) went on the disabled list. The Blue Jays are not a very pitcher-friendly opponent, but Odorizzi is talented enough to warrant a roster spot in deeper mixed leagues. Advice: Alex Torres, Alex Colome, and Chris Archer are also under consideration for the assignment, but Odorizzi has pitched really well so far in Triple-A and lines up perfectly for Monday against the Blue Jays. The 23-year-old is worth grabbing in AL-only leagues.

    • John Danks (shoulder) went 4 2/3 innings Saturday in his third minor league rehab start.
Advice: If everything checks out with the left-hander early this week, he should be cleared to join the White Sox starting rotation on Friday night against the Marlins. Danks has been on the shelf all year and makes for a decent waiver stash right now in AL-only fantasy leagues. Since he's coming off shoulder surgery and still rebuilding his arm strength, it might not be wise to trust him right out of the gate in standard mixed formats. Even against Miami.

Advice: Danks will make what could be his final rehab start with Triple-A Charlotte on Saturday. The left-hander holds a 3.00 ERA over three rehab outings, but he has a 10/9 K/BB ratio over 18 innings and his velocity remains down. • Cole Hamels struck out 10 Marlins on Monday, but he still took a loss after allowing two runs in six innings.
Advice: Even Alex Sanabia proved too much for the Phillies offense. Hamels is now 1-7 this year, even though he's given the Phillies seven quality starts in 10 tries. The Phillies have been limited to one or no runs in half of his outings.

Advice: Hamels dropped to 1-6, but this is his first poor outing since April 7; he had a 2.41 ERA over his previous six starts. Subpar command has definitely plagued him this season, but it doesn't help matters that the Phillies have completely thrown defense out the window and started going with a Domonic Young-John Mayberry Jr.-Delmon Young outfield.

    • Julio Teheran allowed one run over 8 1/3 innings in the Braves' 5-1 victory over the Twins on Monday.
Advice: Teheran had a shutout going until Josh Willingham spoiled it by homering with one out in the ninth. It was the first time in 12 major league starts that he pitched beyond seven innings. Advice: Sanabia snapped a five-start losing streak, winning for the first time since April 16. With his 1.69 WHIP and 28/24 K/BB ratio in 51 1/3 innings, he wouldn't be much of a fantasy option even if he pitched for a good team.

In his last two, he's allowed six homers, while also striking out just two batters and walking six. Not that Guthrie was ever likely to maintain an ERA in the low-2.00s, but he has picked a surprising time to come apart, facing the dregs of the AL West (it was the Angels last time out).
