    • On track to return Monday
Steele (hamstring) will start Monday against the Padres as long as he gets through a bullpen session Saturday with no issues, Taylor McGregor of Marquee Sports Network reports.

Advice: The results of Steele's lone rehab start weren't great -- he allowed three runs on six hits over 3.1 innings -- but he feels good and has put his hamstring injury in the rearview mirror, which is the most important thing. Steele threw 63 pitches in his rehab outing Wednesday, so he will be somewhat limited from a workload perspective Monday, assuming he is indeed cleared to rejoin the Cubs' rotation that day. • Throwing bullpen Saturday
Steele (hamstring) is scheduled to throw a bullpen session Saturday, after which he will be reevaluated to determine whether he's ready to rejoin the big-league rotation, Tony Andracki of Marquee Sports Network reports.

Advice: The left-hander felt good after he allowed three runs on six hits over 3.1 innings during a rehab start with Triple-A Iowa on Wednesday, and the Cubs are now determining if another rehab start is necessary. Steele could step back into Chicago's rotation early next week if all goes well during Saturday's bullpen session. Rotowire.com Today, 8:23 am

    • Justin Steele scheduled for BP session Saturday
Justin Steele (hamstring) is scheduled to throw a bullpen session on Saturday.

Advice: Steele went 3 1/3 innings in a rehab start at Triple-A Iowa where he allowed three runs on six hits earlier this week. The 28-year-old is now back in Chicago where he’ll continue to work to get back to full strength. The expectation was that Steele only needed one rehab assignment before getting back to major league action, so we’ll see how he does this weekend and await next steps from the team. • Checkup coming soon
McLain (shoulder) is about a week away from a follow-up appointment that will give the Reds a better idea on his return timetable, Gordon Wittenmyer of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports.

Advice: If all goes well with his exam, McLain could start working out at the Reds' spring training facility in Arizona. He doesn't have an official return date yet. "It's still way too early to determine a time when he would get back to us, but the goal would still be early August ideally," said manager David Bell. Rotowire.com Yesterday, 6:43 pm

    • Max Scherzer targeting rehab outing next week
Max Scherzer (back, thumb) is likely to make a minor league rehab start next week.

Advice: Scherzer told reporters Thursday that his thumb is improving and he was able to resume playing catch without any issues. The hope is that he’ll be ready for a minor league outing at some point next week. Barring any further setbacks, he could return to Texas’ starting rotation mix by mid-May. • Better in no-decision
Brown did not factor into the decision Thursday against the Mets, allowing two runs on three hits and five walks over 4.2 innings. He struck out five.

Advice: Brown got off to a solid start, holding the Mets without a hit through four innings. However, he'd allow the first two batters to reach safely in the fifth before New York scored a pair of two-out runs, forcing the Cubs to turn to the bullpen. While it didn't finish the way he'd have hoped, it was a step in the right direction for Brown after he allowed three runs in just 3.2 innings against the Red Sox his last time out. However, with both Kyle Hendricks (back) and Justin Steele (hamstring) heading out on rehab assignments, the 24-year-old Brown could soon be headed back to the bullpen. • Ben Brown allows two runs, walks five against Mets
Ben Brown allowed two runs with five strikeouts over 4 2/3 innings while not factoring into the decision Thursday against the Mets.

Advice: Brown did miss some bats Thursday, but he also caused a lot of batters not to swing with five walks. The right-hander was still able to keep the Mets off the board until the fifth, but that inning unraveled with a pair coming across before he exited. Brown has shown flashes of brilliance in his rookie campaign, and even this mediocre outing had moments that suggested a bright future. He’s back on the bump against the Padres next week. • Provides lone run in loss
Contreras went 1-for-4 with a solo home run in Wednesday's 4-1 loss to the Tigers.

Advice: Contreras also struck out three times Wednesday for the third consecutive game. He'll likely be happy to put the Tigers in the rear-view mirror after going 1-for-13 with nine strikeouts during the three-game series in Detroit. That poor stretch has dropped Contreras to a .258/.373/.505 slash line on the year, and he's added five homers, 10 RBI, 14 runs scored, eight doubles and a stolen base through 110 plate appearances. Contreras has caught four of the Cardinals' last six games, so it appears he's managing his lingering soreness from a left hand injury fairly well. Rotowire.com Yesterday, 9:55 am

    • Sitting against southpaw
Abreu is out of the lineup for Thursday's game against the Giants, Gabrielle Starr of the Boston Herald reports.

Advice: With southpaw Kyle Harrison on the bump for the Giants, the lefty-hitting Abreu will retreat to the bench for the series finale. The Red Sox will have Tyler O'Neill move from his usual spot in left field to replace Abreu in right. Rotowire.com Yesterday, 7:32 am
