      Advice: Scherzer tossed his first quality start of the season, pitching into the seventh while increasing his pitch count to 90 after having tossed 57 and 77 over his first two starts. While the effectiveness has been there through three starts, as evidenced by a 2.70 ERA and 0.84 WHIP, he's not received much run support, with the Rangers supplying a total of two runs over his last two outings, with each resulting in a loss. One trend to keep an eye on moving forward is Scherzer's strikeout numbers as he's tallied only 11 thus far through 16.2 innings. The last time Scherzer recorded fewer than a strikeout per innings was in 2011, his fourth season in the league.       Advice: Sanchez' outing began in a familiar manner, allowing no runs through the first three innings while being staked with an early 2-0 lead. But Sanchez, who has done a great job this year at avoiding the big inning, couldn't escape that trap Thursday, allowing six batters to reach base during a five-run fourth, then saw his day end prematurely after the first two batters reached base in the fifth. All told, Sanchez, who was coming off a complete game shutout and had allowed just one earned run over 23 innings during his previous three starts, allowed a season-high seven runs, lifting his season ERA more than half a run from 2.41 to 2.96.       Max Scherzer surrendered three runs over 6 1/3 innings on Thursday in a loss to the Padres.

      Advice: Scherzer traded zeroes with his Padres counterpart Michael King early on in a throwback pitcher’s duel on the Fourth of July at Globe Life Field, but wound up fading late as runs he gave up in the sixth and seventh innings were enough to saddle him with a tough-luck loss. He struck out three and only issued one walk. The 39-year-old veteran workhorse has recorded a strong 2.70 ERA, 0.84 WHIP and 11/3 K/BB ratio across 16 2/3 innings (three starts) since making his season debut a couple weeks ago.       Cristopher Sánchez surrendered seven runs in four-plus innings versus the Cubs on Thursday.

      Advice: After three scoreless innings, Sánchez gave up a walk, a 109-mph single and a 112-mph homer to Iam Happ to start the fourth. That wasn’t the end of the damage, though. The Cubs rallied for two more runs in that frame after another walk, and then had two more soft hits to begin the fifth, resulting in his Sánchez’s removal. Both runners later came around to score off Seranthony Domínguez. Sánchez was working on a 19-inning scoreless streak until the fourth today.       Jose Miranda finished 5-for-5 with three doubles and four runs scored Thursday as the Twins topped the Tigers 12-3 in a rain-shortened game.

      Advice: The contest was delayed in the bottom of the seventh and eventually called. Miranda has hit in eight straight games, raising his average to .312. Over the last 30 days, he’s hitting a robust .379/.434/.586 with as many extra-base hits as strikeouts (13).       Marcus Stroman gave up five runs while hurling five innings in a loss to the Reds on Thursday.

      Advice: The long ball was a problem for Stroman, as he gave up three homers accounting for all five runs. He walked two and struck out six in a start that would have looked fine without the roundtrippers. That’s not how this works, unfortunately.       According to the Houston Chronicle, Kyle Tucker (shin) and Justin Verlander (neck) will both be out through the All-Star break.

      Advice: Tucker’s long absence with a shin bruise will continue. It’s fair to wonder if there’s something more going on here, but Tucker will remain out for at least another two weeks through the All-Star game on July 16th.       Winker hit a solo home run in his only at-bat in Thursday's 1-0 win over the Mets.

      Advice: He did not start with the lefty Jose Quintana pitching, but Winker provided the only spark of the contest when he took Adrian Houser deep in the eighth. It was Winker's 10th homer of the season, his fifth career pinch-hit blast and first pinch-hit homer since 2019 with the Reds. It was Winker’s 10th of the season to go along with 39 RBIs. He figures to be a popular name at the trade deadline for a contender looking for a left-handed bat.
