    • Skubal strikes out seven in loss to Twins
      Tarik Skubal allowed three earned runs and four hits over six innings while striking out seven in Tuesday’s loss to the Twins.

      Advice: Skubal pitched two scoreless innings to start the game but ran into trouble in the third inning. After striking out Willi Castro to start the frame, Skubal allowed back-to-back singles to Kyle Farmer and Manuel Margot before Royce Lewis eventually doubled to bring both runners around to score. He would later give up a solo homer to Margot in the fifth inning but returned to pitch a scoreless sixth before being pulled for Will Vest. Skubal has allowed seven earned runs over his last 17 innings pitched while posting a 21:4 K:BB ratio.       Advice: Bednar is expected to progress to throwing off a bullpen mound in the coming days. He landed on the injured list back in late June with a left oblique strain and will most likely be on the shelf until after the Midsummer Classic in a few weeks.     • Nearing bullpen session
      Pirates director of sports medicine Todd Tomczyk said Tuesday that Bednar (oblique) has progressed to throwing from 120 feet and should soon resume mound work, Andrew Destin of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.

      Advice: The right-hander was briefly shut down from throwing after he landed on the injured list June 23 with an oblique strain. Bednar will be eligible to be reinstated to the active roster soon, but he could spend more than the 15-day minimum on the shelf since he's yet to get back on the mound.       Hendricks (1-6) took the loss Sunday against the Brewers, surrendering seven earned runs on seven hits and one walk in 3.2 innings. He struck out three.

      Advice: Hendricks kept the Brewers off the scoreboard over the first three innings before a disastrous fourth inning in which he gave up seven earned runs, including a grand slam to Brice Turang. The 34-year-old veteran was enjoying a renaissance in June, pitching to a 1.27 ERA, 0.80 WHIP, and 16:4 K:BB across 21.1 innings before Sunday's disaster.     • Gives up six runs in no-decision
      Suarez came away with a no-decision in Sunday's 7-6 win over the Marlins. He allowed six runs on nine hits and two walks over 4.2 innings.

      Advice: Suarez struggled mightily Sunday, allowing a season-high six runs. The left-hander pitched into the fifth inning and did not record a single strikeout, the first time in his career he has had zero strikeouts in a start. He faced 26 batters Sunday, making it the first time a Phillies pitcher has faced at least 26 batters in a game without recording a strikeout since 2017.     • Ranger Suárez hit hard by Marlins
      Ranger Suárez allowed nine hits and six earned runs in just 4 2/3 innings on Sunday against the Marlins. He walked two and didn’t record a strike out.

      Advice: This was undoubtedly Suárez’s worst outing of the season. It was the first time in his career he didn’t strike out a batter out in a game he started as the Marlins were all over him. He especially struggled commanding his sinker and fell behind far more often than he has throughout his strong season. This game doesn’t change anything for Suárez going forward, but it stands as a worthy reminder that Suárez’s effectiveness is deeply rooted in command and a pitcher’s command can be wonky game to game.       Kyle Hendricks allowed seven runs in 3 2/3 innings and took the loss against the Brewers on Sunday.



      Advice: Hendricks gave up seven hits, walked one and struck out three. Hendricks cruised through the first three innings without allowing a run and then couldn’t make it out of the fourth inning. He gave up a two-run home run to Christian Yelich and an RBI single to Sal Frelick before the Brice Turang grand slam with two outs chased him from the game. Hendricks’ ERA is 7.48 and he’s won only one of his 10 starts for the Cubs. He’s too hittable at this point of his career to be usable in fantasy. The 34-year-old right-hander is set to face the Angels at home next weekend.

      Pirates general manager Ben Cherington said Sunday that Bednar is making progress in his recovery from a left oblique strain, Andrew Destin of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.

      Advice: Though Cherington struck an optimistic tone about Bednar's health, the two-time All-Star doesn't appear to have a concrete timeline to return from the 15-day injured list. Bednar is first eligible for activation next weekend, but because he has yet to resume throwing since landing on the shelf, he doesn't appear to be on track for a return in the minimum amount of time.       Fried allowed one run on six hits and three walks while striking out four batters over six innings in a no-decision against Pittsburgh on Saturday.

      Advice: Fried pitched very well in the contest, matching the six-inning, six-hit, one-run line put up by rookie phenom Paul Skenes for the Pirates. The Atlanta hurler has given up exactly one run in each of his past three starts, though he was just one win in that span. While Fried's strikeout numbers are down this season -- he has just 84 punchouts over 96 innings -- he's put up his usual ace-quality ratios otherwise with a 2.91 ERA and 1.09 WHIP through 16 starts.
