    • Cleared to begin running program
Friedl (hamstring) was cleared to begin a running progression during a follow-up visit with the doctor Monday, Charlie Goldsmith of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports.

Advice: Friedl had already resumed playing catch and swinging off a tee, but ramping up his running will be the big test as he works his way back from a strained left hamstring. He has been sidelined for the last two weeks but could return from the 10-day injured list shortly after the All-Star break if all goes well. Rotowire.com Today, 1:04 pm

    • Lifts homer in win
Melendez went 1-for-4 with a solo home run in Sunday's 10-1 win over the Rockies.

Advice: Melendez ended a 17-game homer drought with his seventh-inning blast Sunday. The outfielder hit .271 with five doubles but just one RBI during his power drought. Despite the recent improvements at the plate, Melendez is still slashing a poor .190/.256/.367 with nine homers, 25 RBI, 22 runs scored and two stolen bases over 80 contests this season. • Lars Nootbaar comes off the IL on Monday
Cardinals activated OF Lars Nootbaar (oblique) from the 10-day IL.

Advice: Nootbaar played 13 games on his rehab assignment, including five at Triple-A, where he went just 3-for-17. Injuries have hampered the potential breakout for Nootbaar this season, but he should return to an everyday role in center field with Michael Siani shifting back to the bench. Jose Fermin was sent to the minors in a corresponding move. Rotoworld Today, 9:16 am

    • Returns from 10-day injured list
The Cardinals activated Nootbaar (oblique) from the 10-day injured list Monday.

Advice: Nootbaar missed nearly six weeks of action with a strained oblique and is ready to return after going 6-for-23 with two home runs during a seven-game rehab assignment at Double-A Springfield. He should resume everyday duties in right field, resulting in Alec Burleson settling back in as St. Louis' designated hitter. Rotowire.com Today, 9:13 am

    • Makes pinch-hit appearance Sunday
Rodriguez (quadriceps) entered Sunday's extra-inning loss to the Blue Jays as a pinch hitter in the eighth inning and was hit by a pitch in his one plate appearance.

Advice: Rodriguez was out of the starting nine after being removed early from Saturday's game against Toronto with the quadriceps injury, but a subsequent MRI came back with "nothing out of the ordinary," per MLB.com. As had been announced by manager Scott Servais before Sunday's contest after Rodriguez completed some pregame running drills, the outfielder was healthy enough to take an at-bat. However, Servais immediately substituted Dylan Moore for Rodriguez on the basepaths once the latter was plunked, and Rodriguez was subsequently formally ejected in the ninth inning for shouting from the dugout after a called third strike on Mitch Garver. With the benefit of a team off day Monday, Rodriguez could be healthy enough to return to the lineup for Tuesday's series opener against the Padres. Rotowire.com Today, 7:59 am

    • Delivers walk-off home run
Burger went 1-for-5 with a three-run homer in Sunday's win over the White Sox.

Advice: Burger was 0-for-4 with a pair of punchouts before he belted a three-run shot to win the game in the ninth inning. He's gone deep three times in his last 10 games after halting his 11-game drought. On the year, Burger owns a disappointing .216/.256/.356 slash line with nine home runs and 31 RBI through 68 games. • Possible return Monday
Nootbaar (oblique) is nearing a return and could rejoin the Cardinals as soon as Monday in Washington.

Advice: Nootbaar has been out since May 30 while recovering from a left oblique strain, but he appears to be on the cusp of being activated from the 15-day injured list. The outfielder went 6-for-23 with two home runs, three RBI and four runs scored over seven games during his rehab assignment with Double-A Springfield before joining returning to St. Louis. • Homer among four hits in win
Heim went 4-for-5 with a solo home run, a double, an additional RBI and three total runs scored in Sunday's 13-2 win over the Rays.

Advice: Heim tied the game with an RBI single in the fourth inning before adding a solo shot in the sixth. The catcher has gone 15-for-41 (.366) with two homers, four RBI and eight runs scored over his last 12 contests. For the season, he's up to eight homers, 36 RBI, 31 runs scored, one stolen base and a .247/.294/.367 slash line across 296 plate appearances in a starting role. • Ezequiel Tovar goes hitless yet again in loss
Ezequiel Tovar remained hitless for the month of July after going 0-for-4 with three strikeouts against the Royals on Sunday.

Advice: Tovar was the clear choice to serve as the Rockies’ token All-Star a couple of weeks ago, but he’s been brutal of late, going 6-for-50 with one extra-base hit, one RBI, zero runs scored and a 20/0 K/BB in his last 12 games. It’s dropped his OPS from .808 to .734. Ryan McMahon might now be the best bet to be the Rockies’ All-Star, with Cal Quantrill and last year’s All-Star Game MVP Elias Díaz also in the mix.
