Cherington: Skenes needs to ‘build up volume’
Pirates RHP prospect Paul Skenes needs more time to build up before the Pirates call him up to the majors, according to general manager Ben Cherington.
Advice: There was speculation that this year’s No. 1 overall pick would get the nod to fill a hole in Pittsburgh’s rotation with Marco Gonzales on the injured list, but the team still wants to give him more reps at the minor league level. Despite the team’s decision, Skenes is dominating at the Triple-A level where he has yet to allow a run in his first three starts. The 21-year-old has struck out 19 batters in his 9 1/3 innings to open the season. “We don’t want to go from zero to 100 right away.,” Pirates GM Ben Cherington said. “Paul’s so important to us long term, so we want to be really thoughtful about that.”
