    • Strikes out nine in tough loss
Ragans (0-1) tossed six innings of two-run baseball, allowing five hits and three walks while striking out nine while earning the defeat in Thursday's Opening Day 4-1 loss to the Twins.

Advice: Ragans picked up where he left off in 2023 by averaging 15.0 K/9, but not receiving nearly enough run support to earn the loss for Kansas City. The lefty hard-thrower started 12 games for the Royals last season after coming over in a mid-season trade from Texas and posted a 2.64 ERA with 89 strikeouts over 71.2 innings in those 12 starts. He's expected to continue his ascent as one of the top young left-handed starters in the American League this season. Rotowire.com Yesterday, 10:34 pm
    • Starts season on right foot
Cruz went 1-for-5, blasting a solo homer while striking out three times during Thursday's Opening Day victory over Miami.

Advice: Cruz had struggled in his first three at-bats but distributed a 1-0 offering from Sixto Sanchez the opposite way over the left-center field wall to tie the game and eventually lead to the Pirates' victory in extras. The dynamic shortstop played in only nine games last year prior to breaking his leg, but followed up on a strong spring in which he hit seven home runs with a big fly on Opening Day. 2024 is off to a good start for the 25-year-old Cruz and could be the breakout season fantasy managers have been waiting for. • Tallies first homer
Mullins went 1-for-4 with a three-run home run Thursday against the Angels.

Advice: Mullins dropped to seventh in the lineup with left Patrick Sandoval starting on the mound, though it didn't hurt his production on Opening Day. He took Jose Cisnero deep in the seventh frame to tally his first homer of the season and to cap off an 11-run outburst for the Orioles. Mullins posted a .183 ISO across 116 games in 2023 and remains a strong power-speed threat. Rotowire.com Yesterday, 9:28 pm
    • Oneil Cruz homers, Bucs outlast Fish in marathon
Oneil Cruz clobbered a solo homer on Thursday, leading the Pirates to a 6-5 extra-inning Opening Day victory over the Marlins.

Advice: Pittsburgh emerged victorious in a 12-inning Opening Day marathon that took nearly four hours to complete. Cruz’s torrid spring training performance carried over into this one as he launched a game-tying eighth-inning solo shot to left-center field off Marlins reliever Sixto Sánchez. The 25-year-old shortstop batted sixth in this one, which is pretty surprising, and seems unlikely to continue for very long. Rotoworld Yesterday, 5:16 pm
    • Wild in opener
Valdez allowed three runs on five hits and six walks over 4.2 innings in a no-decision Thursday against the Yankees. He struck out five.

Advice: Valdez managed to skirt danger through the first four innings, holding the Yankees off the board thanks to three double-play balls. However, the left-hander's shaky command finally caught up with him in the fifth, when he was tagged for three runs. While his final line ultimately could have looked a lot worse, it's a discouraging outing from Valdez, who's expected to anchor the Astros' rotation while Justin Verlander (shoulder) is sidelined. Valdez went 12-11 last season with a 3.45 ERA, 1.13 WHIP and 200:57 K:BB across 31 starts. Rotowire.com Yesterday, 4:57 pm
    • Josh Hader fans three in impressive Astros debut
Josh Hader struck out the side in a perfect ninth inning Thursday in his Astros debut.

Advice: Hader was called upon with Houston trailing by a run and wound up striking out Giancarlo Stanton, Anthony Rizzo and Anthony Volpe to keep it a one-run margin. That’ll do. Rotoworld Yesterday, 4:43 pm

    • Framber Valdez issues six walks in season opener
Framber Valdez was charged with three runs over 4 2/3 innings on Thursday in a no-decision against the Yankees.

Advice: Valdez was staked to an early three-run lead, but was unable to hang on as things came unraveled in a calamitous three-run fifth inning, which led to his departure from the contest. He allowed four consecutive baserunners before getting a pair of strikeouts, which gave him a shot to escape without any additional damage. Unfortunately, he wound up hitting Anthony Rizzo with a pitch and was immediately lifted for reliever Seth Martinez, who walked in another run. The 30-year-old lefty, who struck out five and also issued six walks, will square off against the Blue Jays on Tuesday at home. Rotoworld Yesterday, 4:41 pm
    • Cole Ragans takes a tough-luck loss on Opening Day
Cole Ragans was solid in a losing effort on Thursday, allowing just two runs on five hits in six innings against the Twins.

Advice: Ragans racked up nine strikeouts and three walks while throwing 97 pitches in the outing. Even though he lit up the radar gun in the spring, Ragans sat 96 mph with his fastball, which is right in line with where he was last year. He also put up an impressive 37 percent whiff rate and 35 percent CSW on the day. While we didn’t see the two-seam fastball he has been working on, Ragans’ cutter is a touch harder this year with less vertical break and more horizontal cut in on the hands of righties. The pitch had a 33 percent whiff rate on Thursday and looks like a really good offering for him. He’ll have a tougher test next week when he travels to Baltimore to face the Orioles. • Not in Opening Day lineup
Ruiz isn't starting Thursday against the Guardians.

Advice: Ruiz had been losing his grip on a starting job in Oakland's outfield during spring training, and the decision to leave him off the Opening Day lineup suggests he may have officially fallen a couple spots on the depth chart. The speedy outfielder may still see a decent amount of playing time in the field to give Seth Brown, JJ Bleday or Lawrence Butler a day off, but a reduced role could bring down the amount of stolen bases he is able to tally over the course of the season. Ruiz should also see regular at-bats against left-handed pitching. Rotowire.com Yesterday, 3:28 pm
