      Josh Smith went 1-for-4 with a solo home run in a win over the Royals on Sunday.

      Advice: Smith took Sam Long deep 383 feet at 102.2 mph for his seventh home run on the season. The 26-year-old has been brilliant filling in for Josh Jung, hitting .303/.391/.478 on the year. Considering his ability to play all over the field, he should be able to fight for consistent playing time even when Jung returns. Provided he keeps hitting like this.       Kenley Jansen earned his second save in two days with a scoreless ninth Sunday against the Reds.

      Advice: It’s Jansen’s 15th save of the year and No. 435 in his career. Jansen and Chris Martin both pitched for the second straight day today, so unless the Red Sox are willing to go to one of them three days in a row, Justin Slaten might get the ninth in a save situation Monday.       Max Fried allowed one run on six hits in six innings in a win over the Yankees on Sunday.

      Advice: It wasn’t a dominant outing for the left-hander, but he allowed just one extra-base hit all day and was able to pitch his way out of any trouble that he found himself in. He induced just seven whiffs on 39 swings for an 18 percent whiff rate and 26 percent CSW, but that’s a pretty solid day against a good Yankees lineup.     • Picks up seventh win
      Fried improved to 7-3 on the season in Sunday's 3-1 win over the Yankees, striking out four while allowing one run on six hits and no walks over six innings.

      Advice: Fried kept the Yankees off the board until a solo run crossed in the sixth on an Anthony Volpe double. Three of the six hits Fried allowed came during the sixth, but a timely double play ended the inning and kept Fried in line for his seventh win. Fried has now turned in eight quality starts through 15 outing, and in seventh of those starts, he's gone at least six innings while allowing no more than one earned run.       Max Fried shut the Yankees out over six innings in a 3-1 win on Sunday. He struck out four without walking a batter.

      Advice: Fried was great in this and kept the Yankees off-balance by mixing all five of his pitches. He didn’t throw one individual offering more than 30% of the time and was adept at varying his four-seam fastball, sinker, and curveball early in counts. He’s as steady and stable as they come.       Sanchez (5-3) earned the win Sunday, allowing three hits and striking out four over seven scoreless innings against the Diamondbacks.

      Advice: Sanchez was highly efficient, needing just 80 pitches through seven and facing just one batter over the minimum thanks to a couple of timely double plays. The seven innings matched a season high for Sanchez, who tossed his eighth quality start and allowed zero runs over six or more innings for the second time this season. It's also the fifth time in his last six starts that Sanchez has allowed one or fewer runs, and he's posted a 1.78 ERA and 1.05 WHIP with 23 strikeouts over 35.1 innings during that stretch.       Cristopher Sánchez shut out the Diamondbacks for seven innings, surrendering just three hits, in the Phillies’ 4-1 win Sunday.

      Advice: Sánchez walked none and struck out four in the 80-pitch outing. He gave up a 387-foot fly to Christian Walker in the first that would have been a homer in nine ballparks, but CBP wasn’t one of them.       Merrill went 3-for-3 with a three-run homer and a walk in Saturday's win over Milwaukee.

      Advice: Merrill singled in his first at-bat before crushing a three-run shot off Carlos Rodriguez in the fourth to put San Diego on the board. The shortstop would reach four times on the night and has now recorded multiple hits in three of his last four games.       Smith started at third base and went 2-for-3 with a solo home run in Saturday's 6-0 win over Kansas City.

      Advice: Smith made a second consecutive start in the field after serving as a designated hitter for a pair of games. He had been dealing with a hamstring injury that forced him to miss four games before returning as the DH. Now that he's back in the field, the question becomes how long he will be there. Third baseman Josh Jung (wrist) rejoined the team Friday and will take live batting practice Tuesday. If all goes well, Jung could be activated off the 60-day injured list afterward. The Rangers would like to keep Smith's bat in the lineup; he's batting .304/.393/.469 over a career-high 259 plate appearances.
