    • Logs steal in win
Merrill went 1-for-4 with a stolen base and a run scored in Friday's 10-3 win over the Diamondbacks.

Advice: This was Merrill's first steal since May 14. Over the 20 contests between thefts, he hit a meager .224 (15-for-67) with no walks and just one extra-base hit. The 21-year-old is still at a respectable .268/.303/.344 slash line with three home runs, 22 RBI, 24 runs scored and eight steals over 63 contests this year. Merrill has been benched against some left-handed pitchers recently, but he should have no trouble maintaining a majority of the playing time in center field over Jose Azocar. • Knocks three hits
De La Cruz went 3-for-4 with a solo home run and a double in Friday's win over Cleveland.

Advice: De La Cruz put the Marlins on the board with his solo shot in the third inning and later smacked another extra-base hit. He's gone deep 11 times this season, though just two of those have come in his last 17 contests. He's slashing .252/.306/.427 with 21 extra-base hits and 28 RBI through 268 plate appearances this season. Rotowire.com Yesterday, 7:36 pm
    • Bryan De La Cruz homers, doubles in Marlins’ win
Bryan De La Cruz went 3-for-4 with a homer and a double Friday to lead the Marlins to a 3-2 win over the Guardians.

Advice: De La Cruz’s hits all left his bat at over 102 mph. He’s batting .252/.306/.427 for the season, which is certainly good enough to keep him in the Marlins lineup but isn’t great for someone who has turned out to be a pretty bad left fielder (he’s currently DHing about two-thirds of the time). One imagines he’ll be one of the many Miami players available in trade talks next month. Rotoworld Yesterday, 7:13 pm
    • Still out of lineup
Machado (hip) is not in the starting lineup for Friday's game against the Diamondbacks, AJ Cassavell of MLB.com reports.

Advice: Machado sustained a mild right hip flexor strain Wednesday against the Angels, and the 31-year-old will sit again Friday. While he didn't start in the series opener against Arizona on Thursday, Machado did pinch hit for Kyle Higashioka in the eighth inning and grounded out to the pitcher. While Machado begins Friday's game in the dugout, Donovan Solano will start at third base and bat fifth against Diamonbacks right-hander Brandon Pfaadt. Rotowire.com Yesterday, 2:49 pm

    • Nico Hoerner out of lineup due to hand injury
Cubs manager Craig Counsell now says X-rays last night on Nico Hoerner’s hand came back “somewhat inconclusive,” and the second baseman is not playing in Friday’s game.

Advice: It was originally reported that the X-rays came back negative after Hoerner was hit on the right hand by a pitch. Hoerner, though, had some trouble gripping the bat and swinging today. Hopefully, this is still just a day-to-day thing. There is the potential for some bad news, though. David Bote is starting at second base tonight. Rotoworld Yesterday, 2:26 pm

    • Sitting out after HBP
Hoerner is not in Friday's lineup in Cincinnati after being hit on the hand by a pitch in Thursday's win over the White Sox, Meghan Montemurro of the Chicago Tribune reports.

Advice: Hoerner was struck by a pitch in the fourth inning Thursday but stayed in and finished that game. He underwent a precautionary X-ray afterward, which evidently came back clean. However, it could be dealing with some residual soreness, hence his absence from Friday's lineup. Consider him day-to-day. David Bote will handle second base Friday. Rotowire.com Yesterday, 1:22 pm

    • Sitting versus lefty
Garcia is absent from the lineup for Friday's contest versus Atlanta.

Advice: With southpaw Chris Sale drawing the start for Atlanta, the left-handed hitting Garcia will begin Friday's festivities on the bench. Ildemaro Vargas will start at second base for the Nationals. Rotowire.com Yesterday, 12:42 pm

    • Nabs quality start in no-decision
Lopez allowed two runs on six hits and one walk while striking out seven batters over six innings in a no-decision against Washington on Thursday.

Advice: Lopez held the Nationals scoreless until the sixth inning, when CJ Abrams and Lane Thomas tagged him for back-to-back solo homers. Lopez looked like he could be on the ropes when the following two batters singled, but the right-handed hurler got out of the jam without another run scoring. That allowed him to register his seventh quality start in what has been a career-best campaign. Lopez ranks third among qualified starters with a 1.85 ERA through 63.1 innings on the season. • Manny Machado grounds out as pinch-hitter
After being held out of the starting lineup due to a hip flexor, Manny Machado grounded out as a pinch-hitter Thursday against the Diamondbacks.

Advice: The Padres said after the game that Machado would have been run for if he hadn’t gotten on base and that it’s unlikely that he’ll start Friday, even at DH. Tyler Wade played third base tonight and probably will do the same Friday. Rotoworld Thursday, 10:11 pm
