    • Orioles recalled RHP Jake Arrieta from Triple-A Norfolk.
Advice: Arrieta was scheduled to start for the Orioles' Triple-A affiliate, but will instead be called up as a reliever for Saturday's game. It's possible Arrieta could make a spot start next week for Freddy Garca or Miguel Gonzalez. The 27-year-old has a 6.63 ERA over 12 innings (four starts) at the major league level this season.

Advice: Hamilton left Monday's game with what was originally described as "lightheadedness," but he's actually been fighting it for a while and began taking antibiotics on Saturday to battle what he suspects is a respiratory infection. The struggling outfielder hasn't considered asking for a day off.

    • Rick Ankiel went 2-for-4 with a two-run homer Saturday against the Cubs.
Advice: Ankiel is 6-for-20 (.300) with two homers, four RBI and six strikeouts since joining the Mets earlier this week. The 33-year-old is not going to hit for a high batting average, but he has enough pop to be useful in NL-only leagues as long as he gets regular at-bats in center field.

    • Rick Ankiel went 2-for-4 with a home run and two RBI but the Mets fell to the Cardinals on Wednesday.
Advice: Ankiel singled in the top of the second inning and then hit a game-tying two-run homer in the top of the seventh. But the Mets wound up losing their third straight game in St. Louis. Ankiel is 2-for-8 since joining New York.

    • Mets manager Terry Collins said Monday that Rick Ankiel and Juan Lagares will platoon in center field.
Advice: Ankiel will start against right-handed pitchers while Lagares will play against southpaws. We're not expecting much in the way of batting average, but Ankiel could provide enough pop to hold some value in NL-only formats. This arrangement could cut into at-bats for Jordany Valdespin, though Collins has talked about using him at second base if Daniel Murphy continues to struggle.

    • Giancarlo Stanton (hamstring) remains limited to running in a pool.
Advice: There's no timetable for when he might be ready to resume baseball activities. "No baseball activity but he's running in the pool," Marlins manager Mike Redmond said. "I just go by what they tell me. From what I've heard, it's a similar type of strain from what (Casey) Kotchman has. It's taken a while for him. We really don't have a time frame. It just depends on how fast he heals and how fast he feels like he can get back on the field."

    • Adam Dunn left Saturday's game against the Angels due to back spasms.
Advice: Jeff Keppinger hit for the first baseman in the fifth inning. Spasms are generally a day-to-day thing, so we'll have to see how Dunn is feeling Sunday before knowing if he'll have to miss some games. It's unfortunate timing, too, as Dunn has been heating up at the plate.

    • Adam Dunn homered twice, doubled and knocked in five runs to lead the White Sox to a 9-4 win over the Twins on Wednesday.
Advice: Dunn is terribly sad to see the series against the Twins come to an end. He hit three homers in the three games, and he could have had a fourth if Aaron Hicks hadn't gone over the fence to rob him on Monday. Hopefully for the White Sox, he'll stay hot in a four-game series in Anaheim this weekend. It doesn't seem all that likely, though; he's hit .228 with just two homers in 92 at-bats against Angels pitching in his career.

Advice: Villanueva held his own as a starter, but he's no longer needed in the rotation with Matt Garza returning from the disabled list. The Cubs were considering going with a six-man rotation, but decided against it after Villanueva allowed seven runs over five innings in his last outing. Villanueva has a 3.93 ERA and 1.14 WHIP this season and will now be used as long reliever.

Advice: Villanueva was consistently bad Tuesday, allowing runs in four of his five innings of work. In total, Rockies hitters got to him for 12 hits, including two home runs. After starting the season on a roll, Villanueva now owns a 3.93 ERA and has just one win to show for his efforts. He should be better his next time out against the Pirates.

    • Cory Luebke (elbow) has had his throwing program stopped for the second time this year in his attempt to return from Tommy John surgery.
Advice: Luebke was shut down in early March before resuming sessions of catch on April 1, and he had progressed to throwing off a mound before this latest setback. Obviously none of this bodes well for his mission to return to live major league games by the All-Star break.

    • Anthony Rizzo went 2-for-4 with a solo homer and two runs scored Saturday against the Mets.
Advice: Arizona's Paul Goldschmidt is quickly emerging as one of the game's best young first basemen, but Rizzo is nipping at his heels. The 23-year-old is hitting .390 (32-for-84) over his last 21 games and has 10 homers and 30 RBI on the year.

    • Cubs signed 1B Anthony Rizzo to a seven-year, $41 million extension with club options for 2020 and 2021.
Advice: The pact was agreed upon Sunday and made official Monday before a press conference at Wrigley Field. It's a hefty commitment for a guy with a .253/.331/.434 career batting line, but there's a very good chance this deal winds up being team-friendly. Rizzo is a superb defender at first base and has begun to adjust to major league pitching this year, boasting an .891 OPS, nine home runs and 28 RBI in 37 games. The 23-year-old can be a star.

    • Chris Perez blew his second save of the season Saturday against the Mariners.
Advice: Perez entered the top of the ninth with a 4-2 lead, but he coughed it up after giving up back-to-back solo homers to Raul Ibanez and Justin Smoak with two outs. The Indians eventually won the game on a fielder's choice in the bottom of the ninth, so Perez actually ended up with the victory. See, it wasn't all bad for Perez owners. The 27-year-old right-hander recently dealt with some shoulder soreness and has shown diminished velocity on his fastball this season, but he owns a 1.80 ERA and 16/5 K/BB ratio over 15 innings. Vinnie Pestano just returned from an elbow injury, so there's no immediate threat to his job.

    • Cardinals recalled RHP Mitchell Boggs from Triple-A Memphis.
Advice: Boggs struggled mightily after being named the Cardinals' closer at the start of the 2013 season and was optioned to Memphis on May 3 with a 12.66 ERA. He wasn't exactly flawless during his time on the farm and will probably be limited to low-leverage situations for a while. Edward Mujica's job is obviously safe.

  • Tue, May 14
    • Mitchell Boggs has tossed five scoreless innings since his demotion to Triple-A Memphis.
Advice: Boggs has permitted three hits, walked two and struck out four. Three of his five innings have required at least 20 pitches, but the Cardinals have been pleased with his progress beyond some efficiency issues. "It sounds like he has made a couple of good mechanical adjustments," manager Mike Matheny said. "The reports from the people who have been seeing him is that it looks like he is in a real good spot. He's an established major league player, so it's not an easy assignment. It seems like he is happy with how he's progressed. It's still yet to be seen how this all plays out, but he's going about this the right way."

Advice: Votto also drew two walks, reaching base in all six of his plate appearances. He boasts a ridiculous .346/.473/.531 slash line in 43 games this year and is probably the best pure batter in the majors right now. It's just gravy that the power is starting to come around.

    • Joey Votto went 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored as the Reds beat the Marlins on Tuesday.
Advice: Oddly enough, the RBI came on a bases-loaded walk, not one of Votto's three knocks on the evening. The first baseman still isn't hitting for much power, but he's continuing to generate offense with his ability to get on base -- Votto has now scored 27 runs to go along with his four home runs and 16 RBI. The homers should come in time; even if they don't, Votto is one of the premier offensive options in fantasy for everything else he provides.
