  • Marlins to be 'mindful' with Martin Prado
The Marlins are going to be "mindful" about Martin Prado's playing time this year.

Advice: The 32-year-old is coming off a productive season (.288, 63 RBI in 500 at-bats) despite battling shoulder and wrist issues. Chris Johnson would likely spell Prado at third on his days off. Derek Dietrich and Miguel Rojas could also see time at the hot corner. Yesterday, 9:36 am
  • Phillies acquire Featherston from Angels
Phillies acquired INF Taylor Featherston from the Angels for a player to be named later or cash considerations.

Advice: Featherston was designated for assignment last week after the Angels claimed Christian Friedrich off waivers from the Rockies. The 26-year-old stuck with the big club last season as a Rule 5 pick, but he batted just .162/.212/.247 over 169 plate appearances. Phillies general manager Matt Klentak was previously the assistant GM with the Angels, so he's clearly a fan. A strong defender, Featherston has options remaining, so he can be stashed in Triple-A. • Padres nab Skip Schumaker on minors deal
Padres signed INF/OF Skip Schumaker to a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training.

Advice: The Reds unsurprisingly declined a $2.5 million option on Schumaker shortly after last season ended and he wound up settling for a non-guaranteed deal. However, the veteran utility player stands a good chance at winning an Opening Day roster spot with the ability to play second base and all three outfield spots. Schumaker, 36, batted .242/.306/.336 with one homer last season in Cincinnati. Monday, 6:24 pm

  • Giants want Juan Uribe for utility role
ESPN's Buster Olney reports that the Giants have talked to Juan Uribe about a utility role, "but the salary ask has been too expensive for them."

Advice: Uribe, who turns 37 in March, had two of his most productive seasons as a Giant back in 2009 and 2010. However, he's also being pursued by the Indians and would likely be in line for quite a bit more playing time with them. Uribe sported a 253/.320/.417 batting line with 14 homers and 43 RBI last season between the Dodgers, Braves, and Mets. Friday, 1:19 pm

  • Taylor Featherston designated for assignment
Angels designated INF Taylor Featherston for assignment.

Advice: The move clears a spot on the 40-man roster for the addition of Christian Friedrich. Featherston sported a hideous .162/.212/.247 batting line for the Halos last season after they scooped him up in the Rule 5 Draft. There's a decent chance he'll clear waivers. Friday, 10:50 am
  • Flores (ankle) working out at full strength
Wilmer Flores (ankle) said Thursday he is working out at full strength.

Advice: He also said he expects to be 100 percent for spring training. Flores suffered a non-displaced fracture of his left ankle on November 26, but the injury shouldn't hold him back when camp kicks into gear later this month. The 24-year-old is expected to be a reserve player for the Mets this year. Thursday, 2:27 pm
  • LAD finalize 2-year, $20M deal with Kendrick
    Dodgers re-signed 2B Howie Kendrick to a two-year, $20 million contract.

Advice: The deal was agreed upon last week and then finalized Thursday after Kendrick passed his pre-signing physical. Kendrick will make $10 million in 2016 and $10 million in 2017, with $5 million deferred each year. He'll act as the Dodgers' primary second baseman again in 2016, but the 32-year-old figures to see starts at third base and left field as well. Kendrick batted .295/.336/.409 with nine home runs, 54 RBI, and six stolen bases in 117 games last season for Los Angeles. Thursday, 9:20 am
  • Report: Indians still targeting 3B Juan Uribe
ESPN's Buster Olney reports that the Indians continue to target free agent infielder Juan Uribe.

Advice: The two sides were linked about a month ago and it's still a possibility with spring training just a couple of weeks away. If the Indians were to sign Uribe, he'd likely share playing time at third base with Giovanny Urshela. Uribe turns 37 in March and batted 253/.320/.417 with 14 homers and 43 RBI in 119 games last season between the Dodgers, Braves, and Mets. Tuesday, 5:22 am
