    • Jonathan Herrera is batting .283/.327/.370 through 49 plate appearances.
Advice: If his slash numbers hold, Herrera will finish with the best offensive season of his career, topping the .694 OPS he mustered in 2010. Unfortunately, the utility infielder has scuffled in the field recently, recording three errors in his last 12 games.

    • Hanley Ramirez (hamstring) has been taking ground balls and hitting recently.
Advice: He's yet to test out his hamstring by running, which is no surprise since he's barely over two weeks into his 4-6 week timetable. Dodgers manager Don Mattingly stressed that the club will make sure Hanley's hamstring is fully healed before bringing him back.

    • Jose Iglesias has been taking ground balls at second and third base at Triple-A Pawtucket.
Advice: Iglesias' defense at shortstop is by far his best asset, but the Red Sox want him to be prepared if he's needed in a utility role at some point. "He's a shortstop," Pawtucket manager Gary DiSarcina said. "He's going to be a major-league shortstop. But the goal is just to give him a tool -- not just for himself, but for the organization."

    • Stephen Drew (back) has returned to the starting lineup for the Red Sox on Monday.
Advice: Drew missed back-to-back games over the weekend due to back issue, but it was never a major concern. The 30-year-old is hitting .238/.336/.410 with three home runs, 18 RBI and a .746 OPS through 31 games this season.

    • Stephen Drew (back) is sitting out for the second straight game Sunday.
Advice: Drew was able to play through a minor back issue on Friday, but the Red Sox don't want to push him. He should be ready to roll again soon. Pedro Ciriaco is getting another start at shortstop.

    • Stephen Drew (back) is not in Saturday's lineup.
Advice: Drew played through a back issue on Friday and the Red Sox don't want to risk it again. The injury is not considered serious, though, and Drew will try to return on Sunday.

    • Miguel Tejada's first homer since July 16, 2011 was a three-run shot off the Astros' Dallas Keuchel on Monday.
Advice: Tejada has started just seven games this season, even though the Royals have gotten terrible production at third base, second base and first base. What's the harm in giving him an expanded role for a bit? For what it's worth, he's gone 9-for-27 with six RBI in his limited action.

    • Yunel Escobar smacked a two-run homer in a loss to the Blue Jays on Monday.
Advice: It was his only hit in four at-bats. Escobar has been a disappointment for the Rays so far, but he's hitting .312 (15-for-49) with two home runs, five doubles and 10 RBI over his last 13 games. Still, he shouldn't be a consideration outside of AL-only leagues and deeper mixed formats.

    • Dee Gordon went 0-for-4 and committed his second error at shortstop on Monday.
Advice: It might not have been a good thing that Gordon homered twice in his first week back in the majors; he's gone just 2-for-25 since his second bomb on May 11. Gordon has terrific fantasy upside with his speed, but he needs to do much better than this if he hopes to push Hanley Ramirez to third base.

    • Brian Dozier went 0-for-4 as the Twins' leadoff man on Monday, dropping his average to .205.
Advice: Dozier started off well after replacing Aaron Hicks in the leadoff spot, but now he's hitting .154 with two walks in 52 at-bats this month. The Twins should consider sending him down, but none of their minor league options are better bets.

    • John McDonald (back) is also dealing with a right elbow injury.
Advice: McDonald landed on the DL last week with a lower back strain, but his elbow has also been an issue. The infielder is eligible to return from the DL on May 30, but it's not clear if he'll be ready at that time.

    • Troy Tulowitzki does roughly two hours of pregame and postgame maintenance on his left leg every day.
Advice: The maintenance includes massages and strengthening exercises before the game and sitting in the ice tub and a routine with exercise bands after the game. Tulo admits that his nagging left groin ailment leaves him "not capable" of playing every day. The injury bothers the shortstop most when he's running, particularly when he lunges to first base and sometimes when he breaks out of the batter's box. The Rockies are doing their best to manage the condition, and assistant general manager Bill Geivett admits that the club is "being overly cautious." Tulo has started 34 of the team's first 42 games and will probably continue to play at a similar pace. He's been awfully productive, hitting .341/.413/.605 with eight homers and 35 RBI, but obviously the groin issue remains a long-term concern.

    • Jed Lowrie went 0-for-3 with a sacrifice-fly RBI in Saturday's victory against Kansas City.
Advice: Lowrie pounded the ball in April, batting .333 with a .938 OPS and 15 RBI in 102 plate appearances. The 29-year-old suffered a strained neck at the end of the month and hasn't been the same since, batting .232/.328/.286 with no homers, four RBI and one run scored over 56 May plate appearances. It's possible that the oft-injured infielder is trying to play through a malady that would be better treated by rest.

    • Luis Cruz is nursing a sore throwing elbow.
Advice: He could be placed on the disabled list, as Mark Ellis (quad) is ready to be activated. Cruz is hitting a pathetic .096/.118/.096 this season and has seen his playing time dwindle of late.

    • Maicer Izturis went 1-for-4 with a single in Saturday's loss to the Yankees.
Advice: Izturis isn't walking or making contact this season, and you already know his swing is punchless. Toronto was hoping for more than a .218/.242/.331 slash line when they signed Izturis from the Angels over the winter to a three-year, $9 million deal and the Jays recently sat him in three of four games.

    • Everth Cabrera went 2-for-4 with a stolen base and an RBI in Saturday's win against the Nationals.
Advice: Cabrera has now stolen a base in four consecutive games, bumping him to the National League leader with 15. The shortstop will never post a good batting average, but he's getting on base more and running as effectively as ever. The 26-year-old shortstop batted .246/.324/.324 with a league-leading 44 stolen bases last season and is a decent bet to improve upon all numbers in 2013.

    • Everth Cabrera went 0-for-3 with a walk, a stolen base and an RBI in Thursday's defeat at the hands of Washington.
Advice: Cabrera's 13 steals rank second in the National League. A better real-life than fantasy player, Cabrera's value comes in the form of his legs (steals and runs) and eyes (walks). He looks poised to have a career year.

    • Jean Segura finished 3-for-4 with two RBI as the Brewers beat the Cardinals 6-4 on Saturday night.
Advice: Segura got the Brewers on the board with a two-run triple in the top of the third inning and also slapped two singles. He has an incredible .361/.404/.582 slash line through 170 plate appearances this season.

    • Elvis Andrus went 5-for-5 with two RBI to help the Rangers beat the Tigers 7-2 on Saturday night.
Advice: Andrus got the Rangers on the board first when he singled and then later scored on a passed ball in the bottom of the opening inning. He would later add a triple, a double and two more singles, also tallying two steals. The talented shortstop is hitting .282/.328/.350 with 12 stolen bases in 42 games played this season.

  • Thu, May 16
    • Elvis Andrus has hit safely in 12 of 15 games this month.
Advice: After scuffling out of the gate (.250/.291/.317 in April), Andrus has shown signs of adapting his timing. His OBP in May is over .350. After posting a career high .378 slugging percentage in 2012, Andrus has seen that number tumble to .321 entering play on Thursday. Of course, nobody drafted him as a slugger. The two-time All-Star already has almost half as many steals this year (10) as he did last (21), and he's only been picked off once. We're not concerned with him.

    • Adam Rosales hit a go-ahead homer off James Shields in the eighth in Oakland's 2-1 defeat of Kansas City on Friday.
Advice: The A's had been going with Eric Sogard against righties and Rosales against lefties, but Rosales drew the assignment against Shields tonight and came through with the big blast. As poorly as Sogard has hit, the A's will probably go with Rosales regularly for now.

    • Yankees acquired INF Reid Brignac from the Rockies for cash considerations.
Advice: Brignac made the Rockies' Opening Day roster, but was designated for assignment on Thursday after he batted just .250/.294/.375 in 53 plate appearances. The former top prospect is capable of playing multiple infield positions and will serve in a utility role with the Yankees.

  • Thu, May 16
    • Rockies designated INF Reid Brignac for assignment.
Advice: Brignac batted only .250/.294/.375 with the Rox. It's possible the versatile former top prospect will attract some attention on waivers.

    • Marco Scutaro went 3-for-5 with an RBI single and a run scored Friday against the Rockies.
Advice: Ho-hum, just another multi-hit night for the hottest hitter in the game. Scutaro now has a 16-game hitting streak and has raised his batting average from .215 to .327 in the process. The 37-year-old is not going to provide much in the way of pop or speed, but keep running him out there in all formats until he cools down.

    • Erick Aybar went 0-for-4 in Friday's loss and is just 11-for-51 this month.
Advice: That .216 average is also his on-base percentage for the month, since his one walk this season came on April 30. He's also 0-for-1 stealing bases this month. Aybar is only back in the leadoff spot because Peter Bourjos is hurt. He'll probably be dropped to seventh or lower once Bourjos is activated.

    • Yankees designated INF Alberto Gonzalez for assignment.
Advice: Gonzalez was DFA'd to make room for Reid Brignac on the active roster. He should pass through waivers and continue to serve as organizational infield depth. Brignac is not expected to arrive in time for Saturday's game.
