  • Ruf has three hits, homer in win over Mets
Darin Ruf went 3-for-5 with a home run, three RBI and two runs scored in Saturday's win over the Mets.

Advice: Ruf swatted a three-run bomb in the fourth inning as the Phillies hung 10 runs on the Mets in the victory. It was Ruf's second homer in as many games after going his first 37 games without one. Ineffectiveness and the emergence of Tommy Joseph have relegated Ruf to a reserve role, and the 30-year-old will need a big spring to earn a spot on the 2017 roster. Yesterday, 10:13 pm
  • Mancini launches third homer in four games
Trey Mancini hit his third home run in four games in Saturday's win over the Diamondbacks.

Advice: Mancini took D'backs starter Robbie Ray deep for a solo shot in the fourth inning. The 24-year-old has four hits in 11 at-bats since being brought up by the Orioles, but three of those have left the yard. He could be setting himself up to enter next spring as the favorite for the Orioles' designated hitter job with his hot finish. Yesterday, 8:16 pm
  • Holt has RBI double, run scored against Rays
Brock Holt went 2-for-4 with an RBI double and a run scored in Saturday's win over the Rays.

Advice: Holt plated the first run of the game with a double in the second inning. The all-purpose 28-year-old is hitting .264/.326/.397 with seven homers, 34 RBI, 44 runs scored and four steals in 88 games this year. Yesterday, 7:34 pm

  • Yangervis Solarte returns after wife's death
Yangervis Solarte has rejoined the Padres.

Advice: He hasn't played since his wife passed away from cancer last weekend. Solarte has had a strong season for the Padres, hitting .284 with a career-high 15 HR and 68 RBI. Ryan Schimpf handed third base during his absence. Yesterday, 3:34 pm
  • Flores (wrist) could be done for the year
ESPN New York's Adam Rubin reports Wilmer Flores (wrist) may be done for the season.

Advice: He isn't close to swinging a bat and has already received two cortisone shots since going down with a bruised wrist two weeks ago. Flores could return if the Mets make a deep postseason run but it's a near certainty he won't be back for the final week of the regular season. Assuming that's the case, Flores will close out the 2016 campaign with 16 HR, 49 RBI and a .267 average across 307 at-bats. Yesterday, 1:46 pm

  • Cron has three hits, two RBI in win over HOU
C.J. Cron went 3-for-5 with two RBI and two runs scored in Friday’s 10-6 victory over the Astros.

Advice: Cron had two doubles and a single on the night. He knocked in a run with a double in the second inning and later plated the go-ahead run with a single off Ken Giles in the ninth. The 26-year-old got off to a hot start after returning from the disabled list last month, but he hasn’t been able to sustain it in September. This was his first multi-hit game since September 5. Friday, 9:10 pm
  • Butler hitless against Jays on Friday
Billy Butler went 0-for-2 with a walk Friday against the Blue Jays.

Advice: Tyler Austin replaced him as a pinch-hitter in the ninth inning. The Yankees signed Butler in order to give him some at-bats against left-handed starters as they tried to hang in the Wild Card race, but now that they are fading, it’s probably time to commit to Austin as they look toward 2017. Friday, 7:37 pm
  • Solarte (personal) would like to return
Yangervis Solarte (personal) would like to return this season, but Padres manager Andy Green said the infielder's situation remains "fluid."

Advice: Solarte's wife, Yuliett, died this past Saturday from complications related to cancer. She was only 31. Obviously the Padres will give Solarte all the time he needs. Friday, 7:04 am
  • Mancini belts three-run homer against Red Sox
Trey Mancini went 2-for-3 with a double and a three-run home run in Thursday's loss to the Red Sox.

Advice: Mancini was the only Orioles hitter with an answer for David Price and company, collecting two of the team's six hits and notching the only two Orioles extra-base hits in the game. The three-run homer in the third inning came off David Price. It was the 24-year-old's second homer in three games since being promoted on September 18 after he hit 20 homers between Double-A and Triple-A this year. Thursday, 9:13 pm
  • Butler picks up pair of hits in loss to Rays
Billy Butler went 2-for-4 in a loss to the Rays on Thursday.

Advice: Butler served as the designated hitter and batted cleanup in the game, knocking a pair of singles. He's now hit in each of his six games as a member of the Yankees, going 8-for-18 with a homer and four RBI since signing with the New York club earlier this month. He's hitting .289/.340/.427 overall and at 30 years old, it will be interesting to see if anyone is willing to give him more than a one-year, incentive-laden deal this winter. Thursday, 7:24 pm
  • Howard (knee) back in Phillies lineup Thurs.
Ryan Howard (knee) is back in the Phillies' starting lineup Thursday versus the Mets.

Advice: Howard has been out all week with left knee discomfort. He got it drained on Sunday. The veteran first baseman is batting just .193/.250/.439 with 22 homers and 51 RBI in 104 games this season for Philadelphia. Thursday, 12:46 pm
  • Brock Holt (death in family) back Thursday
Brock Holt (personal) is back in the Red Sox starting lineup Thursday night against the Orioles.

Advice: Holt was excused from the club for a couple of days following a death in his family. He will start at shortstop and bat second Thursday versus Orioles right-hander Chris Tillman. Xander Bogaerts has the night off. Thursday, 12:23 pm

  • Nick Franklin (hamstring) pinch-hit Wed.
Nick Franklin (hamstring) popped out as a pinch-hitter on Wednesday versus the Yankees.

Advice: Franklin had been inactive for six straight days because of a moderate left hamstring strain. He probably isn't going to make many starts over the Rays' final 11 regular-season games. Thursday, 6:06 am

  • Sean Rodriguez hits 18th homer
Sean Rodriguez went 2-for-4 with a homer and three RBI against the Brewers on Wednesday.

Advice: Rodriguez has been treating NL pitchers like Gatorade coolers all season long, bashing 18 homers in just 267 at-bats. It's more likely a career year, but with his versatility, he'll be an interesting free agent this winter. Wednesday, 9:35 pm

  • Wilmer Flores (wrist) won't play on Thursday
Mets manager Terry Collins has ruled out Wilmer Flores (wrist) for Thursday's game against the Phillies.

Advice: Collins deemed the worry-level surrounding Flores' wrist as a "DEFCON 4," so that is somewhat disconcerting. The team had hoped that the 25-year-old infielder would be able to return to the lineup against Phillies southpaw Adam Morgan on Thursday. Flores is currently sidelined by a left wrist injury suffered in a collision at home plate on September 10. He has been given two cortisone shots in the intervening days, but Collins said Flores has not been able to swing a bat since the collision. Wednesday, 1:26 pm

  • Adam Rosales homers, drives in four vs. ARI
Adam Rosales went 1-for-2 with a two-run home run and four RBI in Tuesday's 5-2 win over the Diamondbacks.

Advice: Funky little batting line for Rosales due to the fact that two of his four RBI came via sacrifice flies. His two-run home run in the sixth inning was his 11th of the season. The veteran infielder has homered in two of his last three games and is slashing .233/.323/.485 with 11 homers and 32 RBI over 202 at-bats for the season as a whole. Tuesday, 11:42 pm

  • Descalso notches three hits vs. former team
Daniel Descalso went 3-for-4 with a home run and two runs scored in Tuesday's loss to the Cardinals.

Advice: Playing against his former club, the 29-year-old took former teammate Adam Wainwright deep in the fourth inning for a solo dong. A fractured left hand suffered in spring training has limited Descalso to 89 games, but he's taken well to Coors Field in his first year with the Rox. The utility infielder is hitting .275/.369/.455 with a career-high eight homers this year. Tuesday, 9:48 pm

  • Adams launches 15th homer in win over Rockies
Matt Adams hit his 15th home run of the season and scored twice in Tuesday's win over the Rockies.

Advice: Adams took Rockies starter Jorge De La Rosa, a lefty, out to right for a solo shot in the second inning, the third homer he's hit off a southpaw this season. That's noteworthy after Adams had just six homers against lefties in the first three-plus seasons of his big league career. Adams now has 50 RBI and 35 runs scored to go with those 15 homers. He's hitting .247/.306/.463 in 108 games. Tuesday, 9:40 pm
  • Trey Mancini blasts first MLB home run
Trey Mancini launched his first major league home run in his first start in Tuesday's loss to the Red Sox.

Advice: Called up from the minors on Sunday, Mancini flied out in his first at-bat but then ended Eduardo Rodriguez's no-hit bit with two outs in the fifth inning with a solo blast to left-center field. The 24-year-old could see more starts in the designated hitter spot against left-handers. Tuesday, 7:52 pm
  • Ryan Howard (knee) out Tuesday, Wednesday
Ryan Howard (knee) won't start Tuesday or Wednesday.

Advice: "I don't want [his knee] to blow up again," said manager Pete Mackanin. Howard had that balky left knee drained on Sunday and will be limited to pinch-hitting duties for much of this week. Tommy Joseph is at first base and batting cleanup Tuesday versus the White Sox. Tuesday, 2:51 pm
  • Holt excused following death in family
Brock Holt will be away from the Red Sox for the next two days following a death in his family.

Advice: Holt just returned to the Red Sox starting lineup Monday after an eight-day absence due to shoulder trouble. He should be back for Thursday's series finale in Baltimore. Tuesday, 2:30 pm

  • Matt Adams (wrist) returns to Cards lineup
Matt Adams (wrist) is back in the Cardinals' starting lineup Tuesday night in Colorado.

Advice: Adams missed a couple of games with a jammed left wrist. The big 28-year-old will start at first base and bat sixth versus Rockies left-hander Jorge De La Rosa. Tuesday, 2:23 pm
  • Flores given second cortisone shot for wrist
Wilmer Flores was given a second cortisone injection for his injured left wrist.

Advice: Flores hasn't appeared in a game for the Mets since suffering a bone bruise in an awkward home-plate collision with A.J. Pierzynski on September 10 in Atlanta, and it's going to be at least another couple days before he can return. T.J. Rivera is at second base and James Loney is at first base on Tuesday night against the Braves. Tuesday, 1:13 pm

  • Franklin diagnosed with moderate hammy sprain
Nick Franklin was diagnosed with a moderate strain of his left hamstring following an MRI.

Advice: Franklin suffered the injury last Thursday. At this point, it's going to be tough for him to make it back this season. Steven Souza (hip) is also sidelined right now, so Mikie Mahtook figures to see regular playing time in right field over the final two weeks. Tuesday, 12:41 pm

  • Morneau (neck) has two hits in return
Justin Morneau (neck) went 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored in his return to the starting lineup Monday against the Royals.

Advice: Morneau had been held out of game action since September 12 due to a neck issue. The 35-year-old has batted .261/.299/.438 over 49 games this season and is reportedly leaning toward playing another season. Tuesday, 5:37 am
  • Norris (finger) hitless in return to lineup
Derek Norris (finger) went 0-for-4 in his return to the lineup Monday against the Diamondbacks.

Advice: Norris suffered a sprained left middle finger on Saturday and was held out of the starting lineup on Sunday. He should be good to go moving forward. Tuesday, 5:26 am
  • Holt (shoulder) back in Red Sox lineup Mon.
Brock Holt (shoulder) is back in the Red Sox starting lineup Monday night against the Orioles.

  • Nick Franklin to undergo MRI on hamstring
Nick Franklin is scheduled to undergo an MRI on his left hamstring strain Monday.

Advice: Franklin hasn't played since straining the hamstring last Thursday and he isn't making much progress on the side. Any injury is a potential season-ender at this point, but the MRI results should tell the whole story. Franklin, 25, has registered an impressive .280/.343/.465 batting line in 53 games this summer for Tampa Bay. He missed time with a concussion in August. Sep 19, 6:07 am

  • Rosales clobbers 10th homer in loss Sunday
Adam Rosales clobbered his 10th home run of the season in Sunday's loss to the Rockies.

Advice: His solo shot opened the game's scoring in the second inning. Rosales also singled, finishing the afternoon 2-for-4. In a part-time job with the Padres this season, he has slashed .230/.326/.474 with 10 long balls and 28 RBI. Sep 18, 4:32 pm

  • Trey Mancini called up from Triple-A
Orioles purchased the contract of 1B Trey Mancini from Triple-A Norfolk.

Advice: Mancini, 24, batted .282/.357/.458 with 20 homers between Double- and Triple-A this season. He'll give the O's another right-handed bat with Mark Trumbo (back) banged up. Sep 18, 7:48 am
  • Ryan Howard (knee) out again Sunday
Ryan Howard (knee) remained out of the Phillies' lineup Sunday.

Advice: Howard is dealing with some swelling in his left knee. Tommy Joseph will handle first base. Sep 18, 7:14 am
  • Matt Adams exits with jammed wrist
Matt Adams left Saturday's game against the Giants with a jammed left wrist.

Advice: Apparently he hurt himself sliding into second base in the second inning, though he didn't exit until the sixth. His injury sounds pretty minor and the Cardinals have already said that Adams should be available for Sunday's series finale. Jedd Gyorko took over for him at first base. Sep 17, 8:28 pm
  • Rodriguez homers as Bucs sweep doubleheader
Sean Rodriguez went 2-for-4 with a home run and two runs scored to help the Pirates defeat the Reds 7-3 in the second game of Saturday's doubleheader.

Advice: The homer was the fourth for Rodriguez in his last six games -- including his second Saturday, as he went deep in both ends of the doubleheader -- and he's got 16 homers and 50 RBI on the year. It'll go down as a career year for the 31-year-old, who's slashing .266/.349/.516 overall. Sep 17, 7:53 pm

  • Justin Morneau (neck) nearing a return
Justin Morneau (neck) is hoping to return by the end of the team's current nine-game road trip.

Advice: The road trip ends a week from Sunday. Morneau has missed the last five games with a self-described "old man neck." Despite battling injuries all season, the 35-year-old said he's "leaning" toward playing another year. Morneau's contract is up at the end of 2016. Sep 17, 5:51 pm
  • Ryan Howard scratched with left knee injury
Ryan Howard (knee) was scratched from the Phillies' lineup Saturday against the Marlins.

Advice: He's dealing with some fluid buildup in his left knee. Tommy Joseph will handle first base and bat cleanup against Marlins right-hander Jose Urena. Howard is day-to-day. Sep 17, 2:44 pm
  • Descalso has walk-off single against Padres
Daniel Descalso played hero with a pinch-hit walk-off RBI single in Friday’s 8-7 win over the Padres.

Advice: The Rockies rallied for three runs in the bottom of the ninth against Padres closer Brandon Maurer. With a .267/.369/.442 batting line to go along with seven homers and 36 RBI, Descalso is currently enjoying his most productive offensive season. It might come as a surprise to learn that he has actually done more damage on the road than he has done at Coors Field. The 29-year-old is seeing some time at shortstop with Trevor Story done for the year, but he’s mostly an option in deeper fantasy formats. Sep 16, 10:15 pm

  • Howard slugs solo homer vs. Marlins
Ryan Howard slugged a solo homer and walked twice Friday against the Marlins.

Advice: Howard started the comeback effort for the Phillies with a solo homer off Tom Koehler in the sixth inning. The veteran slugger is batting just .193 with a .250 on-base percentage on the year, but he has amassed 10 homers in just 111 plate appearances since the All-Star break. He's going into his final days with the Phillies. Sep 16, 9:16 pm
  • Butler slugs pinch-hit homer Friday
Billy Butler slugged a pinch-hit two-run homer in the ninth inning Friday against the Red Sox.

Advice: Billy Butler, True Yankee? "Country Breakfast" has now knocked in four runs in his first two games with the Yankees. He had just three RBI for all of August when he was with the Athletics. The 30-year-old is expected to see at-bats out of the DH spot against left-handers down the stretch, but we’re not expecting mixed league-relevancy here. Sep 16, 7:33 pm
  • Yangervis Solarte out due to family issue
Yangervis Solarte was scratched from the Padres lineup on Friday due to a family issue.

Advice: He left the club to go home and be with his family. There's no timetable for his return at the moment, but with the Padres long out of contention, he certainly won't be rushed. Alexi Amarista replaced him in Friday's lineup and could see extra run in his absence. Sep 16, 4:14 pm

He went 6-for-12 with two home runs in the four-game series against the Phils, starting three of the four games. • Billy Butler bats fifth in his Yankees debut
Billy Butler is starting at DH and batting fifth Thursday in his Yankees debut.

Advice: Butler was signed to a major league contract late Wednesday with the Yankees preparing one final push for an American League Wild Card spot. They're scheduled to face left-handed starters in seven of their next 11 games and Butler holds a career .872 OPS versus lefties. He may carry some sneaky value in deeper fantasy leagues.
