  • Martin not ready to play back-to-back games
Blue Jays manager John Gibbons said Russell Martin (neck) isn't ready to play in back-to-back games yet.

Advice: He's been battling neck stiffness for the past week. "He's not 100% that's for sure," said Gibbons. "He's gutting it out, really is what he's doing. But you can tell he's favouring it." Josh Thole is getting the start Saturday but Martin should be back behind the plate Sunday with Marcus Stroman on the mound. Today, 1:19 pm
  • Russell Martin not in Jays lineup Saturday
Russell Martin is not in the Blue Jays starting lineup for Saturday's game against the Rays.

Advice: Martin has been battling a stiff neck off and on for the past week, so he'll take a seat again on Saturday. Josh Thole will get the start behind the dish on Saturday and will bat ninth against opposing right-hander Chris Archer. Today, 11:18 am
  • James McCann expected to return on Tuesday
James McCann (ankle) is scheduled to play two more minor league rehab games at Triple-A Toledo before rejoining the Tigers on Tuesday.

Advice: Jarrod Saltalamacchia has been swinging an extremely hot bat in his absence, but McCann is the club's starting catcher and will return to handle the bulk of the work behind the dish in Detroit. Today, 8:46 am

  • Soto homers, drives in two runs vs. Texas
Geovany Soto went 2-for-4 with a homer and two RBI on Friday against the Rangers.

Advice: Soto socked a solo homer in the third inning before adding an RBI single in the fourth. The 33-year-old has played well when given the opportunity this season, batting .333 (9-for-27) with two home runs, one double, and six RBI over nine games. By the way, Carlos Perez has a rough .160/.222/.180 batting line through 17 games. Soto could find himself getting more playing time. Yesterday, 8:39 pm
  • Barnhart plates lone run in loss to Pirates
Tucker Barnhart plated the Reds lone run with an RBI double in Friday's loss to the Pirates.

Advice: His run-scoring double off of Arquimedes Caminero in the ninth inning pulled the Reds to within three at 4-1, but that would be as close as they would come. Barnhardt finished the evening 1-for-4. He has been swinging a hot bat in the first month of the season, slashing .333/.385/.417 with four RBI in 39 plate appearances. Yesterday, 7:47 pm
  • Christian Vazquez not in lineup Friday
Christian Vazquez is not in the Red Sox' lineup Friday.

Advice: It's just a routine day off. Ryan Hanigan is behind the plate in Vazquez's place. Yesterday, 12:07 pm
  • Hermann clocks two-run homer in win over STL
Chris Herrmann went 1-for-3 with a two-run home run in Thursday's win over the Cardinals.

Advice: Herrmann also struck out twice, but he at least made his lone hit count. The 28-year-old backstop clocked a two-run shot off Cardinals starter Michael Wacha in the second inning. The dinger was his second of the season. That aside, he has seen just 28 at-bats this season and offers no fantasy upside. Thursday, 9:12 pm
  • Rupp has go-ahead double vs. Nationals
Cameron Rupp delivered a go-ahead two-run double in the ninth inning as part of a 3-0 win over the Nationals.

Advice: The bases-loaded hit broke a scoreless tie. It was a catchable ball, but Bryce Harper took a strange route. Fortunately for the Phillies, it dropped in and bounced around the warning track. Rupp has now hit safely in seven straight games and owns a .280/.294/.480 batting line overall. Thursday, 6:27 pm

  • Ross clubs solo homer in win over Brewers
David Ross clubbed a solo homer and drew a walk in Thursday’s 7-2 win over the Brewers.

Advice: It was his second home run of the season and the 98th of his career. The 39-year-old could see some more playing time with Miguel Montero (back) sidelined, but he’s a poor fit for a significant role at this point in his career. Tim Federowicz was called up from Triple-A Iowa on Thursday, but neither are all that interesting from a fantasy perspective. Thursday, 5:54 pm

  • Cubs won't call up C prospect Contreras
Cubs manager Joe Maddon said Thursday that catching prospect Willson Contreras could make an impact at the major league level in the second half of the season.

Advice: Maddon was asked about Contreras in the context of Miguel Montero landing on the disabled list Thursday with a back injury. Contreras is batting .375/.419/.446 in 62 plate appearances this season at the Triple-A level and he hit .333/.413/.478 in 521 plate appearances last year at Double-A, but there are still concerns about his defense and game management. David Ross and Tim Federowicz will handle catching duties at the major league level until Montero returns. Thursday, 9:25 am

  • Cubs add Tim Federowicz for C depth
Cubs purchased the contract of C Tim Federowicz from Triple-A Iowa.

Advice: Federowicz will give the Cubs depth at catcher while Miguel Montero recovers from a back injury. Federowicz could see a good amount of starts over the next two weeks, but he is a .194/.247/.300 career major league hitter. Thursday, 9:08 am
  • Brayan Pena (knee) nearing full activities
Brayan Pena (knee) expects to resume most baseball activities next week.

Advice: Pena is now 23 days removed from surgery to remove loose cartilage from his left knee. The initial timetable was a month to six weeks. "Hopefully, next week I can go out there and start running on the field and taking some batting practice," the veteran catcher told Brian Stull's STL Baseball Weekly. "After that, it would be a decision for our training staff to see where we’re going from there." Pena signed a two-year, $5 million free agent contract with the Cardinals this offseason to serve as Yadier Molina's backup. Eric Fryer has been filling in. Thursday, 5:11 am

  • Elias Diaz (elbow) playing catch in Florida
Elias Diaz (elbow) threw for a second consecutive day Wednesday at the Pirates' spring training complex.

Advice: Diaz was placed on the major league disabled list just before Opening Day after coming down with right elbow soreness in mid-March. The 25-year-old catcher will probably continue to be eased along, and he figures to report to Triple-A Indianapolis rather than Pittsburgh once he returns to full health. Thursday, 5:05 am

  • Ruiz goes deep in win over the Nationals
Carlos Ruiz continued his mini power surge, connecting with his third homer of the year in the eighth inning against the Nationals on Wednesday.

Advice: Ruiz is 37 years old and doesn't play everyday, but he's taken advantage of the playing time he's been given. After hammering a 3-2 pitch from lefty Sammy Solis over the left-field wall in the eighth inning, prompting some "Chooch!" chants, he is now hitting .294/.368/.588 in 38 plate appearances. The Phillies won't be afraid to give him additional opportunities to start if he continues to swing the bat well. Wednesday, 7:41 pm

  • Russell Martin (neck) back in the Jays lineup
Russell Martin (neck) is back in the Blue Jays' batting order Wednesday night against the White Sox.

Advice: Martin has been in and out of the Toronto lineup because of a stiff neck. It's nothing serious. The veteran catcher is off to a rough start this season, slashing just .154/.237/.173 in 17 games played. He'll try to get it going against Chicago lefty Jose Quintana. Wednesday, 12:37 pm
  • McCann (ankle) goes 0-for-3 in rehab debut
James McCann (ankle) went 0-for-3 with two walks in his rehab debut Tuesday at Triple-A Toledo.

Advice: McCann served as the Mud Hens' designated hitter, but he should be catching in a couple days and he could return to the Tigers' active roster this weekend. The 25-year-old has been out since April 12 with a sprained ankle. Tuesday, 6:05 pm

  • Austin Hedges needs surgery on hamate bone
Austin Hedges needs surgery for a hamate fracture in his hand and is likely to miss 6-8 weeks.

Advice: It's rough news for Hedges, who had a huge spring and was off to an excellent start this season at Triple-A El Paso. He'll be on the shelf until at least mid-June. Tuesday, 5:40 pm

  • Russell Martin (neck) sitting again Tuesday
Russell Martin (neck) will sit again Tuesday.

Advice: And he might also sit out Wednesday ahead of Thursday's scheduled off day, but manager John Gibbons said he is not expected the absence to go on longer than that. Martin has been dealing with some neck stiffness. Josh Thole is behind the plate Tuesday versus the White Sox. Tuesday, 1:21 pm
  • Nationals recall Pedro Severino from AAA
Nationals recalled C Pedro Severino from Triple-A Syracuse.

Advice: Severino will give the Nationals depth behind the plate while Wilson Ramos spends a couple days on MLB's bereavement list following a sudden death in his family. Tuesday, 1:06 pm
  • James McCann (ankle) rehabbing in Toledo
James McCann (ankle) will begin a rehab assignment with Triple-A Toledo on Tuesday.

Advice: McCann is expected to DH on Tuesday but he should be back behind the plate in a few days. The 25-year-old will likely be activated later this week. Jarrod Saltalmacchia has fared reasonably well in his absence, hitting four home runs over his last nine games. Tuesday, 11:36 am

  • McCann (ankle) could begin rehab stint Tue.
James McCann (ankle) could begin a minor league rehab assignment on Tuesday.

Advice: McCann, who is coming back from a Grade 2 sprain of his right ankle, ran the bases again on Monday. Assuming he feels good on Tuesday, he could serve as a DH for the start of a brief minor league rehab assignment. Jarrod Saltalamacchia will continue to get the bulk of the playing time behind the plate until he's ready. Monday, 2:41 pm

  • Russell Martin (neck) out again Monday night
Russell Martin (neck) is out again Monday versus the White Sox.

Advice: Martin has been battling some neck stiffness and the Blue Jays don't want the minor issue to turn into something major. Consider the veteran catcher day-to-day. Josh Thole is filling in and batting ninth. Monday, 12:34 pm
  • Martin sat out as precautionary measure
Russell Martin sat out Sunday's game as a precautionary measure as he continues to battle stiffness in his neck.

Advice: The team is trying to be smart about the situation and not push him too far and risk further aggravation. It doesn't sound as though it will require a trip to the disabled list, but expect Martin to see more than his usual rest until he gets the issue under control. Sunday, 1:37 pm
  • Russell Martin (neck) scratched from lineup
Russell Martin (neck) was a late scratch from Sunday's lineup.

Advice: Martin played Saturday after exiting Friday's game with neck spasms, but he's evidently not totally over the ailment yet. Consider him day-to-day. Josh Thole is catching in his place. Sunday, 9:02 am
  • James McCann (ankle) runs the bases
James McCann (ankle) ran the bases on Sunday.

Advice: He also caught a bullpen session on Saturday. McCann won't return from the disabled list when first eligible on Tuesday, but he'll begin a four-game rehab assignment soon. Sunday, 8:04 am

  • Herrmann doubles, homers in loss
Chris Herrmann went 2-for-3 with a double, a homer and a walk, driving in four runs in Saturday's win over the Pirates.

Advice: Herrmann had one hit in 21 plate appearances prior to this outburst. He's now hitting .130/.200/.348 on the young season, which actually mirrors his .146/.214/.272 rather closely from a year ago with the Twins. He's not fantasy relevant. Saturday, 9:14 pm
  • Russell Martin returns to lineup on Saturday
Russell Martin (neck) is in the Blue Jays starting lineup on Saturday.

Advice: Martin was forced to leave Friday's game due to neck spasms, but he's feeling good enough to give it a go on Saturday. The 33-year-old backstop has struggled at the dish in the early going, slashing just .146/.236/.167 with no homers and three RBI in his first 16 games. Saturday, 7:42 am
  • Russell Martin thinks he can play on Saturday
Russell Martin (neck) said Friday that he believes he'll be able to return to the Blue Jays lineup on Saturday.

Advice: Martin was lifted from Friday's game against the A's due to neck spasms. It doesn't sound as though the issue is serious though, so expect to see him back behind the dish before the weekend is through. Friday, 8:34 pm
  • Russell Martin leaves game with neck spasms
Russell Martin was removed from Friday's game against the Athletics due to neck spasms.

Advice: The Blue Jays are calling his exit purely precautionary. It wouldn't be a surprise to see him get an extra day of rest on Saturday before returning to the lineup. Martin had been 1-for-2 with a double and a strikeout prior to his departure. Friday, 6:40 pm
  • Christian Vazquez not in lineup Friday
Christian Vazquez is not in the Red Sox' lineup on Friday.

Advice: He's just getting a day off. Ryan Hanigan is behind the plate. Friday, 1:28 pm
  • James McCann (ankle) resumes activities
James McCann (ankle) has resumed baseball activities.

Advice: McCann has caught pitches thrown by a pitching machine, thrown long toss from a squatting position and taken soft toss in the batting cage. He's eligible for activation on Tuesday, but the catcher still has some steps to go through before it's known whether returning that day is possible. "I have to get to the point where I can run," he said. "I haven’t run full speed by any means. I am just slowly getting back into baseball activity." Tigers manager Brad Ausmus said that McCann could avoid a rehab assignment if he winds up missing only around 15 days of action. Friday, 6:58 am

  • David Ross hits rare homer in win over Reds
David Ross went 2-for-4 with a home run and three runs scored in a win over the Reds on Thursday.

Advice: Ross, who hit just one home run in 72 games with the Cubs last season, muscled up to drive one out in the sixth inning. The catcher, who was playing in his sixth game, is batting .278/.391/.500. He's set to retire after the season. Thursday, 7:20 pm

  • Barnhart hits walkoff RBI single vs. Rockies
Tucker Barnhart hit a walkoff RBI single in the Reds' 6-5 defeat of the Rockies on Wednesday.

Advice: Barnhart doubled home Adam Duvall in the bottom of the seventh and then played the role of hero in the bottom of the ninth with a base hit to right field that plated Brandon Phillips easily from third. The backup catcher finished the day 2-for-4 with two RBI and is now batting .348/.423/.391 over seven games played (23 at-bats). Devin Mesoraco might be getting more days off in the coming weeks.
