  • Gimenez prevents shutout via solo homer
Chris Gimenez went 1-for-1 with a solo home run and a walk in Tuesday's loss to the A's.

Advice: Gimenez cracked a solo home run off Sean Manaea to lead off the sixth inning. That homer would represent the only run the Indians managed on the evening. That little power showing aside, the year has mostly been a struggle for Gimenez, who is hitting just .220/.262/.347 with four homers and 11 RBI over 118 at-bats. There is no fantasy intrigue here. 47 minutes ago
  • Brayan Pena (knee) to begin catching soon
Brayan Pena (knee) is expected to begin catching in rehab games later this week.

Advice: Pena is 2-for-9 in three games as the designated hitter at High-A Palm Beach. He is eligible to be activated from the 60-day disabled list on September 4 and the Cardinals are hoping the veteran backstop will be ready on that date. He's appeared in just four games this season for St. Louis after signing a two-year, $5 million free agent contract over the winter. Today, 7:22 pm

  • Phegley (knee, strep) nearing rehab games
Josh Phegley (knee, strep) is on track to begin a minor league rehab assignment later this week.

Advice: Phegley's rehab from a knee injury was stalled by strep throat, but he's over it now. The expectation is that he will be activated from the disabled list September 1. Today, 4:32 pm
    60-Day DL

  • Avila (hamstring) cleared for rehab games
Alex Avila (hamstring) has been cleared to begin a rehab assignment Monday with Triple-A Charlotte.

Advice: And he figures to return to the White Sox active roster by the end of this week, assuming he can avoid a physical setback. Avila initially landed on the disabled list July 6 with a right hamstring strain and then reaggravated the injury a few weeks later. Yesterday, 10:41 am

  • Ryan Hanigan (ankle) nearing rehab assignment
Ryan Hanigan (ankle) will begin a rehab assignment soon.

Advice: Hanigan has missed the last two weeks of action with tendinitis in his left ankle. He'll rejoin the Red Sox when rosters expand but is likely headed for a diminished role with Sandy Leon playing so well. Sunday, 6:32 am
    15-Day DL

  • Francisco Peńa recalled from Triple-A
Orioles recalled C Francisco Peńa from Triple-A Norfolk.

  • Maile hits first major league homer Saturday
Luke Maile hit his first major league home run in Saturday's win over the Rangers.

Advice: Maile took Rangers starter A.J. Griffin deep for a solo shot in the second inning. He finished 1-for-3 with two runs scored on the evening. The 25-year-old hit just 19 home runs over parts of five minor league seasons, so power isn't really a big part of his game. He's now hitting .219/.265/.313 in 22 games with the Rays. Saturday, 6:50 pm
    L, 2-1 vs Bos
  • Nationals option Pedro Severino to Triple-A
Nationals optioned C Pedro Severino to Triple-A Syracuse.

Advice: Severino was with the club in a reserve role in place of the injured Jose Lobaton, but with Lobaton back in the fold on Saturday his services were no longer needed. He'll continue to provide catching depth at Triple-A. Saturday, 12:24 pm

  • Nationals activate Jose Lobaton from DL
Nationals activated C Jose Lobaton from the 15-day disabled list.

Advice: He was set to be activated on Friday, but after a day of travel the Nationals decided it would be best to give him another day. He'll return to a reserve catcher role behind Wilson Ramos. Saturday, 12:19 pm
  • Josh Phegley (knee) able to get in crouch
Josh Phegley (knee) was able to get into a crouch to catch a flat ground throwing session Thursday.

Advice: It appears to be the last hurdle he needed to clear before beginning a rehab assignment, as he's already been hitting and running. Phegley is on track to be activated from the disabled list on September 1. Friday, 6:42 am
    60-Day DL
    W, 9-1 vs Cle
  • Alex Avila (hamstring) nears rehab assignment
Alex Avila (hamstring) could begin a rehab assignment next week.

Advice: Avila aggravated his right hamstring injury while on a rehab assignment late last month but apparently has finally made some progress. He'd appear to be on track to be activated September 1 if he can avoid more speed bumps. Friday, 5:59 am
    15-Day DL
    W, 9-1 vs Phi
  • Cabrera's three-run jack helps Reds down Fish
Ramon Cabrera hit a three-run home run, his first of the season, to help the Reds hold off the Marlins 5-4 on Thursday.

Advice: The 26-year-old finished 2-for-4 in the game, just his 37th of the season as the backup for Tucker Barnhart. He picked a heck of a game to hit his first homer, too, as the Reds were opposing all-everything ace Jose Fernandez. The dinger was just the second of his career, and Cabrera is batting .250/.286/.337 in those 37 games this season. Thursday, 8:31 pm
    W, 3-0 vs Tex
  • Jose Lobaton (elbow) to return on Friday
Jose Lobaton (elbow) will be activated from the disabled list on Friday.

Advice: Ryan Zimmerman (wrist) is also on his way to Atlanta. The Nats are unlikely to keep three catchers, which means Pedro Severino is probably headed back to the minor leagues. Lobaton will assume his normal role as the backup to Wilson Ramos. Thursday, 5:17 pm
  • Angels call Carlos Perez back up to majors
Angels recalled C Carlos Perez from Triple-A Salt Lake.

Advice: With Geovany Soto heading to the disabled list to rehab from a knee injury, the Angels needed additional backstop depth. Enter Perez. In 68 games with the Angels this season, he has hit to a .223/.252/.349 triple-slash. There is no true fantasy upside here. Wednesday, 4:24 pm
  • Angels send Soto (knee) to disabled list
Angels placed C Geovany Soto on the 15-day disabled list with right knee inflammation.

Advice: Carlos Perez has been called back up in a corresponding move. No word as of yet as to when Soto might be able to return to action. He was just activated off the disabled list on August 9 following a bout of left knee inflammation. Also, he is dealing with a thumb injury. The life and times of a major league catcher. Wednesday, 4:19 pm
    15-Day DL

  • Braves activate Tyler Flowers (hand) from DL
Braves activated C Tyler Flowers from the 15-day disabled list.

  • Braves place Pierzynski (hamstring) on DL
Braves placed C A.J. Pierzynski on the 15-day disabled list with a left hamstring strain.

Advice: Tyler Flowers was activated from the disabled list in a corresponding 25-man roster move. Pierzynski, batting .218/.237/.305 this year, will likely be out 3-4 weeks. Wednesday, 11:33 am

  • Maile has three hits, four RBI versus Padres
Luke Maile went 3-for-4 with four RBI and a run scored in Tuesday's win over the Padres.

Advice: Maile knocked a three-run double in the second inning to get the party started, and he added an RBI single in the third for good measure. The good evening nearly doubled his RBI count for the year, giving him nine RBI in 20 games. The second-year catcher is hitting .207/.258/.259 in those 20 games. Tuesday, 8:19 pm
    L, 2-1 vs Bos
  • Soto scratched Tuesday with sore right knee
Geovany Soto was scratched from the Angels' lineup Tuesday with right knee inflammation.

Advice: Soto has also been bothered by a bruised thumb. Jett Bandy started behind the plate versus Seattle. Tuesday, 7:33 pm

  • Soto scratched Tuesday with bruised thumb
Geovany Soto was scratched from the Angels' starting lineup Tuesday versus the Mariners.

Advice: Soto suffered a bruised left thumb over the weekend in Cleveland when he was struck by a backswing. Consider him day-to-day. Jett Bandy will draw the start at catcher on Tuesday night versus Seattle. Tuesday, 5:35 pm
    15-Day DL

  • Brayan Pena (knee) set for rehab games
Brayan Pena (knee) is scheduled to begin a rehab assignment Friday with High-A Palm Beach.

Advice: Pena has been a big disappointment this season for the Cardinals, appearing in just four games after signing a two-year, $5 million free agent contract over the winter. Maybe he'll be ready to contribute in September. Tuesday, 1:57 pm
    15-Day DL
    L, 7-4 vs NYM
  • Lobaton (elbow) has two singles in rehab game
Jose Lobaton (elbow) went 2-for-4 with a pair of singles and a walk Monday in his first minor league rehab game with Triple-A Syracuse.

Advice: Lobaton also stole a base, which is something he has never done in 328 games in the majors. The 31-year-old has been out since July 19 with left elbow tendinitis, but he's finally getting closer to rejoining the first-place Nationals. Tuesday, 6:12 am
  • Lobaton (elbow) ready for rehab stint
Jose Lobaton (elbow) will begin a minor league rehab assignment Monday with Triple-A Syracuse.

Advice: Lobaton has been out since July 19 with left elbow tendinitis, but he's ready to test himself in game action again. It's unclear how many games he'll need in the minors before being activated, but Pedro Severino will continue to serve as Wilson Ramos' backup for now. Aug 15, 2:11 pm
  • Josh Phegley (knee) expected back Sept. 1
Josh Phegley (knee) is expected to be activated from the disabled list on September 1.

Advice: Phegley underwent surgery in early July to remove a cruciate ligament cyst on his right knee. He's eligible to return on August 31, but the A's will wait an extra day until rosters expand. Aug 14, 7:09 am
    60-Day DL
    W, 9-1 vs Cle
