  • Vazquez (elbow) still making progress
Christian Vazquez (elbow) will throw to bases on Friday.

Advice: When asked about his elbow, Vazquez said, "Fine. No problem." It sounds like he's almost fully recovered from Tommy John surgery. Blake Swihart has already been named the starting catcher, which means Vazquez will likely open the year in Triple-A. Rotoworld.com Yesterday, 8:57 am
  • Jason Castro loses arb. case, will make $5M
Jason Castro lost his arbitration hearing against the Astros and will make $5 million in 2016.

Advice: Castro requested $5.25 million when arbitration figures were exchanged last month, so it wasn't much of a difference, but the two sides were unable to avoid a hearing. The 28-year-old batted .211 with 11 homers and a .648 OPS over 104 games in 2015. He's going into his final year before free agency. Rotoworld.com Tuesday, 10:32 am
  • Plawecki had sinus surgery in December
Kevin Plawecki underwent sinus surgery in December.

Advice: Plawecki said that his right sinus was completely blocked, which led to dizziness last season, especially after flights. Doctors believe that they have solved the issue, which is a relief to the young backstop. He's expected to serve as the backup in 2016, but given Travis d'Arnaud's injury history, there's always the chance he'll play a bigger role. Plawecki, who turns 25 later this month, batted .219/.280/.296 with three home runs and 21 RBI over 73 games as a rookie. Rotoworld.com Tuesday, 9:09 am
  • Royals, Salvador Perez still talking contract
MLB Network's Jon Heyman reports that the Royals are still talking to Salvador Perez about extending and redoing his contract.

Advice: Talks have been going on for most of the winter, so it would be a surprise if something doesn't get done. Perez might have the most team-friendly contract in the game, as he's owed just $2 million in 2016 with three club options for 2017-2019 which max out at $14.75 million. An extension would increase the guarantee involved, but it's a tricky proposition for the Royals, as Perez's heavy workload could take its toll on him as he moves closer to his 30s. • Astros, Castro have arb. hearing on Monday
Jason Castro will have an arbitration hearing with the Astros on Monday afternoon.

Advice: And a ruling should come Tuesday. Castro requested a $5.25 million salary for 2016 and was offered $5 million from the Astros' front office when arbitration figures were exchanged in mid-January. Now three arbitrators will choose one of those numbers. Castro, 28, is in his third and final year of arbitration, meaning he can become a free agent next winter. Rotoworld.com Monday, 5:20 am
  • D'Arnaud, Plawecki could play other positions
Mets general manager Sandy Alderson said Wednesday that catchers Travis d'Arnaud and Kevin Plawecki could see playing time at other positions this spring.

Advice: The most logical fit is at first base, as Wilmer Flores is the only backup to Lucas Duda at this point. Plawecki has some experience at first base in the minors, but d'Arnaud's exposure there has been very limited. Still, given d'Arnaud's injury history, adding some versatility wouldn't be the worst idea. Rotoworld.com Wednesday, 10:43 am
  • Stearns: No trade imminent for Lucroy
Brewers general manager David Stearns reiterated Tuesday that the club doesn't have anything in the works regarding a Jonathan Lucroy trade.

Advice: In other words, nothing has changed since the weekend, when Stearns said that he expects Lucroy to be with the team when spring training begins. The Nationals, Rangers, and Astros have all been mentioned as possible suitors and the 29-year-old is a natural trade chip for the rebuilding Brewers, but nothing appears imminent.
