    • Nelson Cruz went 3-for-5 with two RBI as the Rangers beat the A's 9-4 on Wednesday.
Advice: The outfielder recorded three singles on the evening, raising his line to .270/.333/.527 in 69 games. The runs batted in gave him 50 on the season to go with 18 home runs. He's having a terrific season in his walk year, and it could lead to a big payday come winter.

    • Nelson Cruz homered twice, doubled and knocked in four runs as the Rangers beat the A's 8-7 on Monday.
Advice: Cruz homered off Dan Straily in the fourth and Jesse Chavez in the fifth, giving him 18 bombs for the year. Only Chris Davis (24) and Miguel Cabrera (19) have more in the AL. If Cruz stays healthy, his career high of 33 homers is probably going down.

    • Bronson Arroyo allowed just one unearned run in seven innings of a no-decision against the Pirates on Wednesday.
Advice: Arroyo was the victim of his own fielding blunder, as the unearned run scored on a fielding error he committed in the third inning. Otherwise he was spotless, keeping the Pirates off the scoreboard. He'll carry a 3.04 ERA and 1.16 WHIP into Tuesday's start against the A's.

    • Jason Grilli blew his first save of the year against the Reds on Wednesday, giving up a game-tying home run to Jay Bruce in the bottom of the ninth inning.
Advice: As Meatloaf said, 25 out of 26 ain't bad. The homer was Grilli's first allowed this year as well, and the earned run ballooned his ERA to 0.99. Everyone is entitled to a bad pitch every now and then; Grilli will be just fine.

    • Justin Grimm allowed three runs over five innings to pick up the win against the A's on Wednesday.
Advice: Grimm followed up his longest outing of the year with one of the shorter ones, throwing just 75 pitches over the five innings before being pulled. It was still enough to get him his sixth win, as he held the A's to just three hits and three walks. His next start will come Tuesday against the Yankees in New York.

    • Michael Saunders went hitless in Wednesday's loss and is hitting .200 with just one extra-base hit and one RBI this month.
Advice: This after he hit .187 in May. Saunders is very fortunate to still have a starting job, and as much as the Mariners want him to succeed, it's quite possible he'll lose it soon.

    • C.J. Wilson combined with Scott Downs and Ernesto Frieri on a two-hitter Wednesday in a 1-0 win over the Mariners.
Advice: Wilson allowed both hits -- singles off the bats of Kyle Seager and Kendrys Morales -- before Downs and Frieri finished up with perfect frames. Three of Wilson's six wins this season have come at Seattle's expense, and he's now 14-5 with a 3.55 ERA lifetime against the Mariners.

    • C.J. Wilson limited the Yankees to two runs and five hits in seven innings Friday to pick up a victory.
Advice: Wilson had lost five of his last six decisions, though he was pitching no worse than he did when he opened the season 3-0. Now he's 5-5 with a 3.90 ERA. His 1.43 WHIP is still pretty unimpressive, but it's been coming down since April. Wilson has a favorable matchup at home against the Mariners next time out.

    • Tommy Milone allowed six runs in 5 1/3 innings in a loss to the Rangers on Wednesday.
Advice: Nothing went right for Milone on Wednesday. The left-hander allowed eight hits and a walk while striking out just one on the evening. It was more of a death by papercuts than anything, though, as only one of the eight hits went for extra bases. He'll go again Tuesday against the Reds.

    • Brandon Phillips hit a walk-off single in the 13th inning to give the Reds a 2-1 win over the Pirates on Wednesday.
Advice: Phillips has struggled of late, as he's just 12-for-59 (.203) in June, and he was struggling again on Wednesday before the single in the 13th inning. The slump has dropped his average on the season to .272. Maybe Wednesday's heroics will ignite his bat once again.

    • Joe Saunders took a complete-game loss after giving up one run in eight innings against the Angels on Wednesday.
Advice: The lone run to score off him did so on a wild pitch. This makes five straight quality starts for Saunders, though he has a 2-2 record to show for it. Overall, he's 5-7 with a 4.48 ERA. Next up for him is a favorable home start against the Pirates.

    • Joe Saunders pitched seven innings of one-run ball Friday in the Mariners' 3-2 win over the A's.
Advice: Saunders improved to 5-6 and lowered his ERA to 4.80. It's the first time he's been under 5.00 since mid-April. Next up for Saunders is a road start against the Angels, followed by a home outing against the Pirates. We wouldn't want him active next week; he's 1-4 with a 7.58 ERA on the road this year.

    • Chris Young went 2-for-5 with a home run as the A's lost to the Rangers on Wednesday.
Advice: Young hit a three-run homer, his seventh of the year, to account for all three RBI. He batted leadoff for just the third time this season with Coco Crisp out, but he'll likely drop lower in the lineup when Crisp returns. Young is hitting just .192/.275/.378 this season.

  • Sat, Jun 15
    • Chris Young finished 3-for-3 with a homer and a double versus the Mariners on Friday.
Advice: The good news is that Perez has four three-hit games since May 24. The bad is that he's picked up one hit total in the other 13 games he's appeared in since that day. It's why he's batting just .184 at the moment.

    • Jeff Locke threw seven scoreless innings but was denied a win against the Reds on Wednesday.
Advice: Just when it seems Locke couldn't possibly be pitching better, he does. The southpaw kept the Reds off balance all night, giving up just four hits and three walks while striking out three. The only thing keeping him from being 7-1 was Jason Grilli's first blown save of the year. Locke will toe the rubber again on Tuesday against the Mariners in Seattle.

    • Jay Bruce hit a game-tying solo home run in the bottom of the ninth inning against Jason Grilli and the Pirates on Wednesday.
Advice: Bruce picked a good time -- if you're a Reds fan, that is -- for his only hit of the night. The solo shot gave him 14 on the year to go with 49 RBI. The outfielder is now hitting .277/.323/.500 after a slow start.

    • The Rockies will option Jeff Francis to Triple-A Colorado Springs prior to Thursday's game.
Advice: The move won't be made official until the Rockies call up Roy Oswalt. The club is hoping that Francis will agree to stick around for depth, but he has the option of choosing free agency because of his major league service time. He's put up a 6.58 ERA and 1.56 WHIP this season and wouldn't figure to net a major league deal elsewhere.

    • Jeff Francis allowed eight runs in six innings in a loss to the Blue Jays on Tuesday.
Advice: Francis did little right on Tuesday, giving up 10 hits -- including three homers -- while striking out only two. The outing left the southpaw with a 6.58 ERA and 1.56 WHIP on the season. There's been speculation for a while, but with Roy Oswalt set to make his Rockies debut on Thursday this start has the looks of Francis' last with the club.

    • Justin Morneau finally hit his third home run of the year Wednesday in the Twins' 7-4 win over the White Sox.
Advice: Morneau hadn't gone deep since April 28. He owns a decent .289 batting average in 64 games this season and has been effective with runners in scoring position, but the power has completely vanished. It may be a struggle for him to reach a double-digit home run total.

    • Jose Reyes (ankle) will join Triple-A Buffalo on Friday to continue his rehab assignment.
Advice: He'll be just one step away from activation at that point. Reyes, who has been on the shelf since April 12 with a severe ankle sprain, is 5-for-12 through his first three rehab games at High-A Dunedin. He should be back in the Blue Jays' starting lineup in less than a week.

    • Jose Reyes (ankle) went 2-for-3 with two singles and two runs scored Monday in his first rehab games with High-A Dunedin.
Advice: Reyes, who was playing his first game since his severe ankle sprain on April 12, also played five innings at shortstop. Barring any setbacks, the speedy shortstop could rejoin the suddenly red-hot Blue Jays within the next 10 days.

    • Jose Reyes (ankle) will begin a minor league rehab assignment Monday with High-A Dunedin.
Advice: Reyes is slated to 4-5 innings in his first game back. He will finish his rehab stint against more advanced competition, but should return from the disabled list by the end of the month if he can avoid setbacks. The speedy shortstop has been sidelined since April 12 with a severely sprained left ankle.
