  • Lowrie (foot) in Monday's lineup vs. Angels
Jed Lowrie (foot) is in Monday's lineup against the Angels.

Advice: Lowrie was hit in the foot by a pitch on Sunday and eventually left the game, but he's going to try to give it a go Monday. He'll bat sixth against C.J. Wilson.

    7:05 pm vs LAA
  • Jason Heyward (thumb) not in Monday's lineup
Jason Heyward (thumb) remains out of the Braves' lineup Monday against the Pirates.

Advice: Heyward hasn't played since he was hit in the left thumb by a pitch last Wednesday. It was reported Sunday that he was still unable to grip a bat, so fantasy owners would do well to have a backup plan this week.

  • Burton to remain in closer role vs. Arizona
Jared Burton will remain in the closer role for the series against the Diamondbacks.

Advice: Burton hasn't had any save chances since Glen Perkins (elbow) went down, but Twins manager Ron Gardenhire still sees him at the top of the pecking order. He'll look for other spots to use Michael Tonkin and Lester Oliveros.

  • Taveras not in Monday's lineup
Oscar Taveras is not in Monday's lineup against the Cubs.

Advice: He's sitting with southpaw Travis Wood on the hill for Chicago. Randal Grichuk is starting in right field and makes for a nice play in daily formats.
  • Mauer not in Monday's lineup
Joe Mauer is not in Monday's lineup against the Diamondbacks.

Advice: Here's a reminder that this is the last week of the season and fantasy owners need to be prepared to roll with the punches. Chris Parmelee will start at first base Monday.

  • Nova progressing well from TJ surgery
Yankees manager Joe Girardi said Monday that Ivan Nova has had zero setbacks and has progressed "extremely well" since Tommy John surgery.

Advice: Nova, who had Tommy John surgery in April, began a throwing program in late August. Things could obviously change depending on how his rehab goes, but he's aiming for a return around next May.

  • Teixeira (wrist) out of Yankees' lineup Mon.
Mark Teixeira (wrist) is out of the Yankees' starting lineup again on Monday night.

Advice: Teixeira also sat out Saturday due to lingering soreness in his right wrist. He was recently given another cortisone shot -- his third of the season -- and is hoping to return to action at some point this week. Francisco Cervelli is at third base Monday against the Orioles.
  • Kipnis (hamstring) won't play Monday vs. KC
Jason Kipnis (hamstring) won't play for the Indians on Monday night against the Royals.

Advice: Kipnis will be replaced by Justin Sellers to finish out the suspended game (which begins at 6:05 p.m. ET) and he won't be in the starting lineup for the full game to be played after that. The second baseman tweaked his hamstring on Thursday and is still sore. He has a dissapointing .234/.314/.335 slash line this season.
  • Yankees claim OF Eury Perez off waivers
Yankees claimed OF Eury Perez off waivers from the Nationals.

Advice: Perez was designated for assignment by the Nats last week. He has a promising .310/.354/.411 slash line with 63 stolen bases in 193 career games at Triple-A, so the 24-year-old is worth a shot for the Yanks.

  • Ubaldo to start for Orioles on Tuesday vs. NY
Ubaldo Jimenez will start for the Orioles on Tuesday night against the Yankees.

Advice: Jimenez actually pitched pretty well in the Orioles' AL East clincher last week, limiting the Blue Jays to two runs over five innings. But it was his first start in a month and the 30-year-old right-hander owns a rough 4.90 ERA and 1.54 WHIP in 119 1/3 total frames this season. He's not a good fantasy streamer.
  • Kipnis (hamstring) doubles in his return Sun.
Jason Kipnis (hamstring) finished 2-for-5 with a double in his return to action Sunday.

Advice: Kipnis tweaked his hamstring on Thursday and was held out of the Indians' starting lineup on Friday and Saturday, but he returned with a productive game Sunday and should be a full-go for the final week of the regular season. The 27-year-old second baseman will look to finish 2014 on a positive note. He's been a disappointment coming off his breakout 2013.
  • Benoit (shoulder) impressive in return Sunday
Joaquin Benoit (shoulder) tossed a perfect inning Sunday in his first appearance since August 26.

Advice: Benoit missed close to a month with a right shoulder injury. He struck out two of the three batters he faced Sunday in his return to action and could rack up another save or two before the 2014 regular season comes to a close. Benoit owns a stellar 1.55 ERA, 0.80 WHIP, and 62/14 K/BB ratio in 52 1/3 innings this season.
  • Collin McHugh returned to action on Sunday September 21.
  • Welingon Castillo (ribs) homers in return
Welington Castillo (ribs) homered Sunday in his return to the Cubs' starting lineup.

Advice: It was an eighth-inning solo shot off Dodgers reliever Pedro Baez. Castillo suffered a right rib contusion on Friday, but it's obviously feeling better now. The 27-year-old catcher has 12 home runs this season.
  • Joaquin Benoit returned to action on Sunday September 21.
  • Jason Kipnis returned to action on Sunday September 21.
  • Alex Avila (concussion) could return Monday
Alex Avila (concussion) took batting practice and plated in a simulated game on Sunday without any issues.

Advice: As long as he receives the proper medical clearance on Monday, there's a strong chance that he'll rejoin the Tigers starting lineup for the opener of a three-game set against the White Sox.
  • Jay Bruce clobbers two homers to down Cards
Jay Bruce clobbered a pair of home runs and drove home three, leading the Reds to a 7-2 victory over the Cardinals in St. Louis.

Advice: Bruce opened up the game's scoring with a solo blast off opposing starter Lance Lynn in the fourth inning, chipped in an RBI single in the sixth and added his second long ball in the eighth inning. It's been a disappointing year for the 27-year-old slugger, hitting just .217/.283/.377 with 18 homers and 65 RBI.

  • Jed Lowrie (foot) considered day-to-day
Athletics manager Bob Melvin said Sunday that Jed Lowrie (foot) was removed from their game against the Phillies because he didn't have his necessary range after being hit by a pitch.

Advice: It sounds as though the injury isn't believed to be serious, so Lowrie should be considered day-to-day. Nick Punto would continue to fill-in should he be forced to miss a game or two.

  • McHugh turns in quality start in win over M's
Collin McHugh allowed three runs over six innings in a win over the Mariners on Sunday.

Advice: McHugh gave up just four hits on the afternoon, with Michael Saunders' two-run homer doing most of the damage against him. McHugh walked just one while striking out six. McHugh still hasn't lost since the month of July, and he's now 11-9 with a 2.73 ERA on the year. The right-hander has one final start left in his stellar 2014 campaign, facing the Mets on Saturday.
  • Jed Lowrie removed from Sunday's game
Jed Lowrie was removed from Sunday's game against the Phillies in the fifth inning with an apparent injury.

Advice: Lowrie was hit in the foot by a pitch in his first at-bat, but it's unclear if that is the reason for his early departure. He was replaced defensively by Nick Punto to begin the fifth inning. The A's should have an updated on his status shortly.

  • Jason Heyward (thumb) unable to grip bat
Jason Heyward is unable to grip a bat well enough to hit due to swelling in his left thumb.

Advice: Heyward hasn't played since Wednesday due to the injury, and it doesn't sound like he's on the verge of returning. Emilio Bonifacio is handling right field on Sunday in Heyward's place.
  • Jason Heyward (thumb) sitting out again Sun.
Jason Heyward (thumb) remained out of the Braves' lineup Sunday.

Advice: He hasn't played since suffering a left thumb injury on Wednesday. Heyward remains day-to-day, but there's been no indication as to when he might return to the lineup. Emilio Bonifacio is handling right field on Sunday.

  • Mark Teixeira wants to keep playing
Mark Teixeira wants to finish out the season and is looking to get another cortisone injection for his right wrist.

Advice: Teixeira left Saturday's game due to soreness in the wrist, which has caused him problems for a couple of years now. The Yankees are huge long shots to progress to the playoffs at this point, so Teixeira might be better off just taking the final week to rest. He's rather not, though.
    Saturday, 4:59 pm
  • Mark Teixeira out with wrist soreness
Mark Teixeira exited Saturday's game because of renewed soreness in his troublesome right wrist.

Advice: It might be time for Teixeira to shut it down. Brendan Ryan replaced him at first base today. The Yankees could give Brian McCann some starts there during the final week, opening up time for Francisco Cervelli, John Ryan Murphy and Austin Romine behind the plate.
    Saturday, 3:22 pm
  • Welington Castillo (ribs) not in Cubs lineup
Welington Castillo (ribs) is not in the Cubs starting lineup on Saturday.

Advice: Castillo exited Friday's game in the first inning after sustaining a right rib contusion. John Baker will get the call behind the dish and hit eighth against Roberto Hernandez on Saturday.
    Saturday, 7:34 am
  • Alex Avila (concussion) remains out of lineup
Alex Avila (concussion) remains out of the Tigers starting lineup on Saturday.

Advice: Avila continues to battle concussion-like symptoms and was disoriented when attempting to take swings on Thursday and Friday. Bryan Holaday will take his place behind the dish on Saturday and will continue to share time with rookie James McCann until Avila returns.
    Saturday, 7:25 am
  • Kipnis (hamstring) could return this weekend
Jason Kipnis (hamstring) could rejoin the Indians lineup this weekend.

Advice: Kipnis sustained the injury in the eighth inning of Thursday's game and was held out Friday as a precautionary measure. It comes at an unfortunate time for fantasy owners, but consider him day-to-day for now.
    Saturday, 6:30 am
  • Avila tries to swing bat, feels 'disoriented'
Tigers manager Brad Ausmus said that Alex Avila (concussion) felt "disoriented" when he tried taking some swings Thursday and Friday.

Advice: Avila is sitting out Friday for the 10th time in 17 games this month due to post-concussion issues, and it sounds like, if anything, his symptoms are getting worse. With just over a week left in the season, he might not make it back. James McCann is getting the start behind the dish Friday, and he'll share time with Bryan Holaday while Avila is out.
    Friday, 2:12 pm
  • Welington Castillo has rib contusion
Welington Castillo has been diagnosed with a left rib contusion.

Advice: Castillo exited Friday's game in the first inning with the injury. He'll be re-evaluated before it's determined how much time he might miss.
    Friday, 1:12 pm
  • Alex Avila (concussion) out again Friday
Alex Avila (concussion) remained out of the Tigers' lineup Friday.

Advice: Avila has dealt with post-concussion issues for a good chunk of September, starting just nine of a possible 16 games. He'll miss the first game of the huge three-game set against the Royals and it's not clear when he'll return to action. James McCann is behind the dish Friday.
    Friday, 12:56 pm
  • Jason Heyward (thumb) not in Friday's lineup
Jason Heyward (thumb) is not in the Braves' lineup Friday.

Advice: Heyward exited Wednesday's game with a left thumb injury, and although X-rays came back clean, the thumb is still swollen. He's listed as day-to-day and could be available as a defensive replacement Friday. Ryan Doumit is in right field in Heyward's place.
    Friday, 12:23 pm
  • Welington Castillo exits with back injury
Welington Castillo left Friday's game against the Dodgers with an apparent back injury.

Advice: Castillo appeared to tweak his back in the top of the first inning and was pinch-hit for by Rafael Lopez in the bottom of the frame. The Cubs should have more on Castillo's status later Friday.
    Friday, 12:02 pm
  • Padres could ease Benoit into closer role
The Padres could ease Joaquin Benoit (shoulder) back into game action before using him in save situations.

Advice: Benoit is expected to be available out of the bullpen starting on Friday after missing the last few weeks with a shoulder issue. With the veteran reliever likely to pitch in a low-leverage situation or two before returning to the ninth inning, fantasy owners shouldn't drop Kevin Quackenbush just yet.
    Thursday, 3:56 pm
  • Nationals designate Eury Perez for assignment
Nationals designated OF Eury Perez for assignment.

Advice: Perez has a decent .310/.354/.411 batting line with 63 stolen bases in 193 career games at Triple-A. The 24-year-old outfielder should draw interest on waivers.

  • Teixeira (wrist) goes 0-for-3 in return Wed.
Mark Teixeira (wrist) went 0-for-3 with a walk and a strikeout Wednesday against the Rays.

Advice: Teixeira sat out Tuesday with discomfort in his surgically-repaired wrist. He told reporters that he's committed to playing through the pain through the end of the season and will then undergo a full examination to determine what sort of offseason treatment is necessary. The 34-year-old first baseman is batting .217/.320/.400 with 21 homers and 58 RBI in 116 games.
    Thursday, 5:45 am
  • Mark Teixeira returned to action on Wednesday September 17.
    Thursday, 1:58 am
  • X-rays negative on Jason Heyward's left thumb
X-rays on Jason Heyward's left thumb came back negative.

Advice: Heyward left in the eighth inning of Wednesday's game after the thumb, which has caused him problems previously this season, acted up. It appears he's day-to-day for now, but his status should be clearer when he shows up to the ballpark Friday.
    Wednesday, 7:25 pm
  • Heyward leaves game with undisclosed injury
Jason Heyward left Wednesday's game against the Nationals with an apparent injury.

Advice: Heyward didn't show any signs of injury, but in a two-run game that the Braves desperately needed to win he was pinch-hit for in the eighth inning. He's dealt with a recurring thumb injury at points this season. The Braves will hopefully update his situation shortly. Jose Constanza replaced him in right field.
    Wednesday, 6:47 pm
  • Avila (head) out of Tigers' lineup again Wed.
Alex Avila (head) is absent from the Tigers' starting lineup again on Wednesday night.

Advice: Avila hasn't played since taking a foul tip off his mask on Sunday. He has a history of concussions, so the Tigers are treating the situation carefully. Bryan Holaday will start at catcher against the Twins.
    Wednesday, 1:49 pm
  • Teixeira (wrist) back in Yankees' lineup Wed.
Mark Teixeira (wrist) is back in the Yankees' starting lineup on Wednesday night.

Advice: Teixeira missed Tuesday night's game due to wrist discomfort. It's apparently a manageable issue. He's playing first base and batting cleanup versus the Rays.
    Wednesday, 1:15 pm
  • Jay Bruce getting a breather Wednesday
Jay Bruce is not in the Reds' lineup Wednesday.

Advice: Manager Bryan Price evidently wasn't pleased with his team's effort during a one-hit shutout Tuesday, and he's responded by benching every regular. Wednesday's starter for the Cubs, Kyle Hendricks, makes for a fine streaming option.
    Wednesday, 12:47 pm
  • Jimenez battles shaky control to help clinch
Ubaldo Jimenez got the win, allowing two runs over five innings, as the Orioles clinched the AL East with an 8-2 victory against the Blue Jays on Tuesday.

Advice: It was Jimenez's first start in exactly a month, and he battled his shaky control as he has all season long. But the Jays couldn't capitalize, and Jimenez allowed just the two runs on two hits and four walks while striking out six. Though the Orioles have clinched, it's unlikely Jimenez starts again this season. He sits on a 4.90 ERA, 1.54 WHIP, and 110/74 K/BB ratio.
    Tuesday, 7:34 pm
  • Benoit (shoulder) shooting for Friday return
Joaquin Benoit (shoulder) could rejoin the Padres' bullpen on Friday.

Advice: Benoit threw a bullpen session Sunday with no issues and will throw another 'pen session Wednesday. If that goes well, he'll be cleared to return to action. It remains to be seen whether the reliever will immediately regain his closer job, but he certainly needs to be owned in fantasy leagues.
    Tuesday, 4:15 pm
  • Teixeira sits Tuesday due to wrist discomfort
Mark Teixeira is out of the Yankees' starting lineup on Tuesday due to lingering wrist discomfort.

Advice: Yankees manager Joe Girardi told reporters that he'll rely on Teixeira to tell the team when he's ready to return. It's a day-to-day situation for now. Teixeira had surgery on that same wrist last season.
    Tuesday, 2:06 pm
  • Avila (head) out of DET lineup again Tuesday
Alex Avila (head) is out of the Tigers' starting lineup again on Tuesday night.

Advice: Avila took a foul tip off his mask on Sunday, so he was held out Monday and Bryan Holaday will get another start behind the plate Tuesday versus the Twins. Avila has a history of concussions, so the Tigers are going to play it safe with him down the stretch.
    Tuesday, 1:42 pm
  • Joe Mauer knocks in four runs
Joe Mauer drove in four runs with a pair of singles Monday against the Tigers.

Advice: If only Mauer had hit like his usual self in the first half, he could have racked up some nice RBI numbers behind a surprisingly productive top of the Twins order. At least he has been better since coming off the DL, driving in 22 runs in 34 games. He had just 28 RBI in 76 games before getting hurt.

  • McHugh exits game after taking comebacker
Collin McHugh left Monday's start versus the Indians with a bruised left forearm.

Advice: McHugh took a comebacker off the bat of Lonnie Chisenhall to force his exit. He was in the midst of another excellent outing, yielding just one unearned run on five hits and no walks while striking out seven. The Astros expect McHugh to be ready for his next start.
    Monday, 7:45 pm
  • Alex Avila (head) not in Monday's lineup
Alex Avila (head) is not in Monday's lineup against the Twins.

Advice: Avila left Sunday's game with lightheadedness after taking a foul tip off the mark. The Tigers aren't going to take any chances, given his history. Bryan Holaday will start behind the plate.
    Sep 15, 1:28 pm
  • Alex Avila leaves game with lightheadedness
Alex Avila left Sunday's game against the Indians with lightheadedness.

Advice: Avila took yet another foul tip off his mask in Sunday's contest. While he didn't display concussion-like symptoms, the Tigers opted to play things cautiously given his history. He is likely to receive an off-day on Monday as well.
    Sep 14, 4:39 pm
  • Joaquin Benoit (shoulder) nearing a return
Joaquin Benoit (shoulder) will throw a bullpen session Sunday.

Advice: He's expected to need only one additional 'pen session after that before being cleared to return to action. It's not clear whether Benoit will immediately regain his closer job or be eased back into things, but fantasy owners should scoop him up now if they're in need of saves.
    Sep 14, 8:05 am
  • Avila slugs go-ahead HR, Tigers stay in first
Alex Avila slugged a go-ahead two-run homer in the Tigers' 5-4 defeat of the Indians on Saturday.

Advice: Detroit was trailing 4-3 when Avila took Bryan Shaw deep in the bottom of the eighth inning. It was his only hit of the night, but it helped keep the Tigers at the top of the American League Central standings (by a half-game over the Royals). Avila is batting .222/.329/.371 with 11 home runs and 47 RBI in 117 games this season.
    Sep 13, 7:44 pm
  • Ubaldo Jimenez to start for O's on Tuesday
Ubaldo Jimenez will make a spot start for the Orioles on Tuesday against the Blue Jays.

Advice: With Saturday's doubleheader, the Orioles will need to utilize a sixth starter next week and Jimenez gets the call. Since his move to the bullpen, the big right-hander has continued to struggle, allowing four runs in his 4 1/3 innings (8.31 ERA) with a 6/4 K/BB ratio. He should be avoided for fantasy purposes.
