    • Nolan Jones batting third on Opening Day
Nolan Jones is in left field and batting third for Thursday’s Opening Day contest against the Diamondbacks.

Advice: There was some concern for Jones after he suffered a right knee contusion last weekend, but he’s ready to roll as Colorado faces the division-rival Diamondbacks to open the season. Here’s the full lineup: Charlie Blackmon RF, Kris Bryant 1B, Jones LF, Brendan Rodgers 2B, Ryan McMahon 3B, Elias Díaz C, Ezequiel Tovar SS, Elehuris Montero DH and Brenton Doyle CF. • Trout homers, Angels get blown out by Orioles
Mike Trout slugged a solo homer in his first at-bat as part of a lopsided Opening Day loss to the Orioles on Thursday.

Advice: We’re used to this by now. At the very least, it’s good to see Trout healthy and doing his thing. On the other hand, it will be depressing to see him playing for another 70-something win team. The ball is entirely in his court, but the best-case scenario would see him get off to a great (and healthy) start and the Angels facilitate a trade to a contender of his choosing. He deserves that much. Rotoworld 22 minutes ago

    • D-backs place E-Rod (shoulder) on 15-day IL
Diamondbacks placed LHP Eduardo Rodriguez on the 15-day injured list, retroactive to March 25, with a left shoulder strain.

Advice: Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo indicated earlier this week that Rodriguez is ahead of schedule in his recovery from a lat strain. The 30-year-old lefty doesn’t have a firm return timetable yet, but should be ready to make his Arizona debut at some point in April or May, barring any setbacks. Rotoworld Today, 1:22 pm

    • Goes on IL
Arizona placed Rodriguez (shoulder) on the 15-day injured list Thursday.

Advice: Rodriguez has been able to resume playing catch since being diagnosed last week with a left shoulder strain, but he's without a clear timeline to make his season debut and will most likely miss beyond the minimum 15 days. Arizona recently bolstered its rotation with the signing of Jordan Montgomery to a one-year deal, but one of Ryne Nelson or Tommy Henry will likely end up sticking in the rotation as Rodriguez's replacement once Montgomery is fully ramped up and ready to make his Diamondbacks debut. • E-Rod (lat) ‘ahead of schedule’ in recovery
Eduardo Rodriguez (lat) resumed a throwing program on Wednesday.

Advice: It’s an extremely encouraging development as Rodriguez is reportedly ahead of schedule and doesn’t appear to be facing a lengthy absence as he recovers from a left lat strain. The 30-year-old southpaw will open the season on the injured list, but should be ready to make his Arizona debut at some point in the early stages of the year. Rotoworld Yesterday, 3:47 pm

    • Begins throwing program
Rodriguez threw from 60 feet Tuesday, Jody Jackson of Bally Sports Arizona reports.

Advice: Tuesday marked the first time Rodriguez has thrown since straining his left lat March 19. There is still no clear timeline for a return, but one may emerge as the 30-year-old lefty continues progressing through his rehab program. The Diamondbacks also signed Jordan Montgomery to a one-year deal Tuesday, which will allow the team to be more patient with Rodriguez's recovery. Rotowire.com Yesterday, 3:42 pm

    • Lined up for Sunday or Monday
Blue Jays manager John Schneider said Wednesday that Gausman (shoulder) will make his season debut either Sunday in Tampa Bay or Monday in Houston, Scott Mitchell of TSN.ca reports.

Advice: Gausman looked terrific in his one and only Grapefruit League outing Monday and will be able to avoid the injured list following a bout with shoulder fatigue. Signs had pointed to him making his season debut Monday, and while that could still happen, Sunday is evidently on the table, as well. Bowden Francis would get the ball on whichever of those days Gausman does not start. Rotowire.com Yesterday, 12:18 pm
    • Nolan Jones drives in two in victory over Brewers
Nolan Jones singled and drove home a pair of runs on Tuesday as the Rockies triumphed over the Brewers 6-1 in Cactus League action.

Advice: It was nice to see the dynamic 25-year-old outfielder back in the Rockies’ lineup after suffering a right knee contusion over the weekend. He smacked a sacrifice fly off of Aaron Ashby in the third inning that gave the Rockies an early 1-0 edge. Jones also added a run-scoring single in the fifth inning that made it a 4-1 ballgame. For the spring, he’s now hitting .250 (13-for-52) with six RBI — though he has yet to hit a home run or steal a base. Rotoworld Tuesday, 2:54 pm

    • Beginning year on IL
Woo will be placed on the 15-day injured list due to elbow inflammation, Ryan Divish of The Seattle Times reports.

Advice: Divish notes that Woo felt discomfort while warming up for his last side session, and he ultimately couldn't get loose. He later underwent an MRI, which came back clean. The Mariners are hopeful that Woo can let the inflammation calm down over the next 7-to-10 days, at which point he can resume throwing. Emerson Hancock will take Woo's place in the starting rotation to begin the season. Rotowire.com Monday, 5:02 pm
