    • Allows seven runs in loss
Severino (5-3) took the loss against the Pirates on Friday, allowing seven runs on nine hits and two walks with three strikeouts over six innings.

Advice: Severino surrendered four runs on three homers between the fourth and fifth innings. He was pulled after loading the bases to open the seventh but all three inherited runners scored on a grand slam. Severino yielded nine hard-hit balls Friday and has allowed six long balls and 17 earned runs over his past four outings. On the season, the 30-year-old owns a 3.83 ERA, 1.20 WHIP and 77:34 K:BB over 103.1 innings and lines up for a home matchup with the Nationals next week. Rotowire.com 2 minutes ago

    • Strikes out eight in win
Skenes (5-0) earned the win against the Mets on Friday, allowing two runs on four hits and two walks with eight strikeouts over seven innings.

Advice: Skenes surrendered a solo home run in the third inning and another run in the fourth but was otherwise fantastic. According to The Athletic, he is the first pitcher in major-league history to record seven or more strikeouts in nine of his first ten career starts. The rookie has not lost a game this season and owns a 2.12 ERA, 1.01 WHIP and 78:12 K:BB over 59.1 innings. He lines up for a road matchup with the Brewers next week. Rotowire.com 5 minutes ago

    • Slated for flat-ground throwing
Manager Torey Lovullo said Friday that Montgomery (knee) will begin throwing off flat ground Saturday, Jesse Friedman of GoPHNX.com reports.

Advice: Lovullo noted that Montgomery is still dealing with a bit of inflammation in his right knee, but the team believes he'll be in good enough condition to throw. Assuming all goes well Saturday, the 31-year-old southpaw will likely be given the green light to begin throwing off a mound within the next several days. Rotowire.com 30 minutes ago
    • Paul Skenes strikes out eight Mets in win
Paul Skenes allowed two earned runs across seven innings on Friday in the Pirates’ lopsided 14-2 win over the Mets. He struck out eight and walked two en route to the win.

Advice: Skenes got better as this game went on. He retired 10 of the final 11 batters he faced and the one that reached was an infield single where Jose Iglesias was ruled out on the field before it was reviewed. He threw nearly the same number of fastballs and splinkers in this game, the third straight start he mixed them virtually evenly. He also threw his slider 23% of the time. That was the first time he’s thrown it that often since May 29th. Alone, all three of those pitches are awesome. Together with his velocity and command makes him one of the best pitchers in baseball. • Luis Severino lit up for seven runs by Pirates
Luis Severino allowed nine hits and seven earned runs in six-plus innings on Friday against the Pirates. He struck out three and walked two in a loss.

Advice: This start from Severino got bad quickly. The Pirates smacked three home runs between the fourth and fifth innings and then he loaded the bases in the sixth before being pulled. Jake Diekman promptly gave up a grand slam to Bryan Reynolds and the rout was on. Still, Severino was not great. He continues to rely heavily on his fastballs, he threw his sinker 54% of the time and four-seam fastball 18% as his two most thrown pitches, and play this pitch-to-contact game. That can work unless the ball leaves the yard like it did on Friday. Rotoworld 43 minutes ago

    • Montgomery set to throw off flat ground Saturday
Jordan Montgomery (knee) is scheduled to throw off of flat ground on Saturday.

Advice: Diamondbacks’ manager Torey Lovullo told reporters on Friday that Montgomery is still dealing with some inflammation in his knee, but the expectation is that he’ll be good enough to resume throwing on Saturday. Depending on how Saturday’s session goes, the club may be able to give a timeline for when the 31-year-old southpaw may be able to return. Rotoworld Today, 6:03 pm
    • Athletics release left-hander Sean Newcomb
      Athletics released LHP Sean Newcomb.

Advice: Newcomb, 31, struggled mightily during his time with the Athletics this season, posting a miserable 6.30 ERA, 1.70 WHIP and a 7/8 K/BB ratio over 10 innings in seven appearances out of the bullpen. He’s talented enough that he should be able to find a minor league opportunity elsewhere if he wants another shot at resurrecting his career. Rotoworld Today, 5:57 pm

    • Will undergo surgery
Almonte will undergo surgery on his right shoulder and is expected to miss the rest of the season, Robert Murray of FanSided.com reports.

Advice: Almonte was shut down from throwing Wednesday after receiving a second opinion on his strained right shoulder, and he'll now elect to undergo surgery rather than restart his rehab process. A clearer timeline for his recovery will likely emerge once he goes under the knife, but the Cubs are not expecting the 30-year-old righty to return until 2025. He'll finish the 2024 campaign with a 3.45 ERA and 1.09 WHIP alongside a 20:8 K:BB over 15.2 innings. Rotowire.com Today, 5:30 pm

    • Needs another rehab outing
Hall (knee) will make one more rehab start with Triple-A Nashville, Curt Hogg of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports.

Advice: Hall's latest rehab start in Triple-A was cut short after three innings due to a rain delay, preventing him reaching his target number of innings. He'll remain in the minors for another turn through the rotation as a result, lowering his chances of rejoining the Brewers ahead of the All-Star break. It remains unclear whether the 25-year-old southpaw will be added to Milwaukee's rotation or head to the bullpen once he returns. Rotowire.com Today, 5:21 pm
