    • Tanner Houck erratic, pulled in fourth inning
      Tanner Houck allowed three runs, one earned, over 3 1/3 innings on Friday against the Yankees. He walked four batters and struck out just one in a no-decision.

      Advice: A 45 minute rain delay early in this game made this start a bit wonky. Houck cruised through the first two innings before the storm and lost his touch afterwards. The three runs off him came on a fielder’s choice with an error, walk, and ground out.     • Jason Foley miraculously escapes with save Friday
      Jason Foley surrendered a pair of runs in the ninth inning on Friday night, but managed to miraculously escape with a one-run lead intact against the Reds to earn his 14th save of the season.

      Advice: Foley came on with a three-run lead to protect in the ninth inning, but immediately made things interesting by allowing an infield single to Elly De La Cruz — who then stole second and took third on a balk. Spencer Steer smacked a one-out RBI single to make it a bit closer and Nick Martini followed with an RBI triple that put the tying run at third base with only one out. Tyler Stephenson then hit a ground ball to third, where Blake Dunn was cut down at the plate attempting to score. Foley then allowed a single to Noelvi Marte before finally getting Santiago Espinal to ground out to first to end it. Foley now sports a 3.26 ERA, 1.29 WHIP and a 24/9 K/BB ratio over 30 1/3 innings on the season to go with 14 saves and a pair of victories. Rotoworld Yesterday, 7:46 pm
       
    • Reese Olson racks up eight strikeouts in victory
      Reese Olson delivered a dominant performance in Friday night’s victory over the Reds, allowing two runs (one earned) on three hits over his 5 2/3 innings of work.

      Advice: The right-hander piled up eight strikeouts on the night while issuing a pair of free passes. He served up a long solo homer to Spencer Steer in the fifth inning, then the Reds scratched out an unearned run while chasing Olson in the sixth inning. The 24-year-old right-hander generated 16 swings and misses on 88 pitches on the night — nine on his changeup — while posting a strong CSW of 34 percent. Now 3-8 on the season, Olson will carry a 3.22 ERA, 1.18 WHIP and an 89/28 K/BB ratio (95 innings) into his final start of the first half on Wednesday against the Guardians.       Carson Spiers was hit hard in a losing effort against the Tigers on Friday night, giving up four runs on eight hits over his 4 2/3 innings of work.

      Advice: The 26-year-old right-hander also issued a pair of walks on the night while striking out three. Spiers’ main problem in the contest was keeping the ball in the yard, as he served up solo homers to Parker Meadows and Colt Keith in the third inning and a two-run shot to Keith in the fifth inning. Spiers generated just four swings and misses on 89 pitches on the night, posting a CSW of 20 percent. He now holds a 3.64 ERA, 1.26 WHIP and a 32/9 K/BB ratio over 42 innings in nine appearances (four starts) on the season.       Michael Kopech slammed the door on the Marlins on Friday night, navigating a tumultuous ninth inning to preserve a one-run victory.

      Advice: The 28-year-old hurler picked up his eighth save of the season for his efforts. As always, it wasn’t easy for Kopech, as he allowed a leadoff walk to Xavier Edwards to bring the tying run to the plate. He battled back though to get Vidal Brujan to bounce into a fielder’s choice and Nick Gordon on a called third strike before allowing a single to Jazz Chisholm Jr. and an RBI single to Bryan De La Cruz. Not to worry though, as he bore down to get Josh Bell on a ground ball to first base to end it. Kopech now sports a 4.58 ERA on the season to go with eight saves in 12 chances.     • Drew Thorpe strikes out five in win over Marlins
      Drew Thorpe was terrific in Friday night’s victory over the Marlins in Miami, surrendering just one run on three hits over his 6 1/3 innings of work.

      Advice: The rookie right-hander punched out five batters on the night while issuing a pair of free passes. He held the Marlins scoreless through the first six frames, but returned for the seventh where he allowed a one-out double to Dane Myers before turning the ball over to the bullpen — and he ultimately scored. Thorpe generated 10 swings and misses on 90 pitches on the night — nine of those on his changeup — while posting an underwhelming CSW of 21 percent. He’ll see if he can replicate this success as he carries a 3-1 record, 3.38 ERA, 1.13 WHIP and an 18/14 K/BB ratio (26 2/3 innings) into his final start of the first half on Wednesday against the Twins.       Roddery Muñoz pitched decently in a bulk role against the White Sox on Friday night, giving up two runs on four hits over his four innings of work.

      Advice: The right-hander also issued four walks on the evening while striking out two. The damage that was done against him came on run-scoring doubles by Martin Maldonado in the fourth inning and Nicky Lopez in the fifth. Muñoz got six swings and misses on 87 pitches on the night, posting a CSW of only 22 percent. He now holds a 5.48 ERA, 1.47 WHIP and a 40/24 K/BB ratio over 44 1/3 innings on the season.       Almonte will undergo surgery on his right shoulder and is expected to miss the rest of the season, Robert Murray of FanSided.com reports.

      Advice: Almonte was shut down from throwing Wednesday after receiving a second opinion on his strained right shoulder, and he'll now elect to undergo surgery rather than restart his rehab process. A clearer timeline for his recovery will likely emerge once he goes under the knife, but the Cubs are not expecting the 30-year-old righty to return until 2025.       Marlins activated RHP Bryan Hoeing from the 15-day injured list.

      Advice: Hoeing will jump right back into the fire on Friday night, drawing a start in the Marlins’ series opener against the White Sox in Miami. Prior to landing on the injured list with a left hamstring strain, the 27-year-old hurler had registered a 1.83 ERA, 0.92 WHIP and a 16/5 K/BB ratio over 19 2/3 innings in his 11 appearances.
