    • Strikes out eight in win
Skenes (5-0) earned the win against the Mets on Friday, allowing two runs on four hits and two walks with eight strikeouts over seven innings.

Advice: Skenes surrendered a solo home run in the third inning and another run in the fourth but was otherwise fantastic. According to The Athletic, he is the first pitcher in major-league history to record seven or more strikeouts in nine of his first ten career starts. The rookie has not lost a game this season and owns a 2.12 ERA, 1.01 WHIP and 78:12 K:BB over 59.1 innings. He lines up for a road matchup with the Brewers next week. • Paul Skenes strikes out eight Mets in win
Paul Skenes allowed two earned runs across seven innings on Friday in the Pirates’ lopsided 14-2 win over the Mets. He struck out eight and walked two en route to the win.

Advice: Skenes got better as this game went on. He retired 10 of the final 11 batters he faced and the one that reached was an infield single where Jose Iglesias was ruled out on the field before it was reviewed. He threw nearly the same number of fastballs and splinkers in this game, the third straight start he mixed them virtually evenly. He also threw his slider 23% of the time. That was the first time he’s thrown it that often since May 29th. Alone, all three of those pitches are awesome. Together with his velocity and command makes him one of the best pitchers in baseball. • Dealing with glute tightness
Smith is not in the starting lineup for Friday's game against the Rays due to glute tightness, Shawn McFarland of The Dallas Morning News reports.

Advice: It's the same injury that kept Smith off the field for four games in June, and the hope this time around is that the injury will keep him out of the lineup for just one or two games. Since June 1, the 26-year-old infielder is slashing .319/.407/.511 with four home runs, 12 RBI and an .918 OPS over 94 at-bats. Rotowire.com Today, 2:11 pm

    • Josh Smith absent from Rangers lineup on Friday
Josh Smith was held out of Rangers’ starting lineup for Friday night’s matchup against the Rays due to glute tightness.

Advice: It’s the same issue that sidelined Smith for a couple of games in June, but he’s hopeful that he won’t need to miss more than a day or two this time around. The versatile 26-year-old has been a key cog in the Rangers’ lineup this season, hitting .293/.386/.451 with seven homers, 34 RBI and four stolen bases over 308 plate appearances in his 83 games. Jonathan Ornelas will draw a start at third base in his stead and will bat ninth against Shane Baz and the Rays on Friday night. Rotoworld Today, 1:17 pm

    • Moves to leadoff
Smith batted leadoff and went 2-for-4 in Thursday's 3-1 loss to San Diego.

Advice: Smith was moved up to leadoff, as a slumping Marcus Semien was given a rare day off. Smith continues to be a surprise and leads the Rangers with a 2.7 WAR. He should continue to see regular work at third base with Josh Jung (wrist) not expected to return until after the All-Star break. Rotowire.com Today, 6:22 am
