    • Jackson Merrill returns to lineup after day off
Jackson Merrill is back in center field Wednesday after getting the day off against a lefty on Tuesday.

Advice: The Padres are again facing a lefty, but Merrill has been starting against most of them, even though he’s hitting just .233/.261/.233 in 46 plate appearances against them. He’s also 7-for-35 with no extra-base hits or walks in his last eight games overall. Rotoworld Wednesday, 10:25 am

    • Plays both games in twin bill
Smith went 1-for-9 with a solo home run in Tuesday's doubleheader versus the Mets.

Advice: Smith caught all 10 innings during Game 1 of the twin bill, then remained in the lineup as the Dodgers' DH in Game 2. He produced one of the team's three runs in the nightcap with a solo homer to left field. Smith's use as the designated hitter after catching in Game 1 highlights how valuable his bat is to the team, though his opportunities to fill the DH role have been more limited this season with Shohei Ohtani in the fold. • Let down by defense Tuesday
Littell (2-3) took the loss Tuesday as the Rays fell 3-0 to the A's, allowing three unearned runs on five hits and a walk over seven innings. He struck out nine.

Advice: The right-hander set a new career high in strikeouts, generating 30 called or swinging strikes among his 95 pitches, but a Brandon Lowe error helped prolong the sixth inning and set the stage for a three-run homer by Miguel Andujar. Littell had to settle for his fourth quality start of the year, and he'll take a 3.03 ERA, 1.20 WHIP and 64:10 K:BB through 62.1 innings into his next outing, which lines up to come on the road this weekend in Baltimore. • Blows save, winds up with win
Neris (5-0) picked up the win after blowing the save Tuesday, allowing one run on one hit and a walk across one inning. He didn't generate a strikeout.

Advice: Neris entered the game in the ninth with a 1-0 advantage and got Brice Turang and William Contreras to ground out to start the inning. However, Neris walked Christian Yelich and moved Yelich to second on a balk, setting up a game-tying RBI base hit for Willy Adames. Despite failing to come away with the save, Neris ended up with the victory after Chicago put up five runs in the 10th inning. On the year, Neris owns a 2.84 ERA across 19.0 innings and is 6-for-8 on save chances. Rotowire.com Wednesday, 6:22 am
    • Plays outfield
Garcia started in right field and went 0-for-4 in Tuesday's 4-2 win over the Diamondbacks.

Advice: This was Garcia's first start in the outfield since missing two games due to a forearm injury. He's gone 3-for-23 (.130) with a home run, a double and two RBI since his return. Rotowire.com Wednesday, 3:48 am
    • Secures save Tuesday
Estevez pitched a perfect ninth inning to earn the save in Tuesday's 4-3 win over the Yankees.

Advice: The Angels rallied ahead in the bottom of the eighth inning, and Estevez made the lead stand. The closer has allowed four runs (three earned) over 8.1 innings in May while adding three saves, one blown save and two losses. He's at a 4.76 ERA, 1.18 WHIP and 17:3 K:BB over 17 innings this season, but he continues to operate in the closer role despite his shaky pitching. Rotowire.com Tuesday, 10:45 pm
    • Carlos Estévez notches eighth save against Yankees
Carlos Estévez recorded his eighth save with a flawless ninth Tuesday against the Yankees.

Advice: The rare perfect inning from Estévez pulled his ERA back down to 4.76. He did go without a strikeout for a third straight appearance, but it’s unlikely that anyone with the Angels noticed. Rotoworld Tuesday, 10:28 pm
    • Short start as expected
Eovaldi allowed two runs on five hits and struck out two without walking a batter over three innings while taking a no-decision in Tuesday's 4-2 win over the Diamondbacks.

Advice: Eovaldi wasn't sent on a rehab assignment and was reportedly on a pitch count for his return from a groin strain. The right-hander ended up throwing 37 pitches (27 strikes) in his first start since May 2. Eovaldi is at a 2.84 ERA, 1.20 WHIP and 46:19 K:BB through 44.1 innings over eight starts this season. Given his limited workload Tuesday, Eovaldi may need to be stretched out over the next couple of weeks. That may make it tough for him to qualify for the win in his next projected start. It's possible Eovaldi pitches again this weekend versus Miami, as Evan Grant of The Dallas Morning News reports that Andrew Heaney -- who threw 2.1 innings in relief Tuesday -- could be used as a long reliever while the Rangers' schedule doesn't require them to have five starters. • Neris blows save, Cubs down Brewers in extras
Hector Neris blew his second save of the season in the Cubs’ win over the Brewers on Tuesday.

Advice: Neris entered the game with a 1-0 lead and recorded two outs to open the bottom of the ninth. He then ran into trouble when he walked Christian Yelich, only to later balk and move Yelich into scoring position. Willy Adames would later single with two strikes to drive in Yelich and for the game into extras. It’s just the second blown save of the season for Neris, who has managed to close things out when called upon despite a concerning 1.56 WHIP. Rotoworld Tuesday, 8:01 pm
