• Rough outing in non-save situation
Bednar allowed three earned runs on two hits and a walk while striking out two across 0.2 innings Wednesday against the Mets.

Advice: Bednar hadn't pitched since Friday so the Pirates got him work, even with a five-run deficit. He allowed three of the first four batters he faced to reach base and allowed an earned run, but he did manage to end his appearance with a pair of punchouts. His poor line was made worse when Josh Fleming allowed a pair of inherited runners to score. Though it didn't come in a save situation, Bednar's appearance didn't help get his season on track, as he's allowed at least one earned run in four of his seven appearances and has an ERA of 13.50. • Throws sim game
Bradley (pectoral) threw around 50 pitches in a simulated game Wednesday, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.

Advice: Bradley threw the session at the Rays' spring training facility, which marked a significant step in his return. He's nearing a rehab assignment, but the team has stated it wants to ensure he regains his stamina before pushing him too hard. A return in the first half of May remains realistic if Bradley doesn't suffer any setbacks. Rotowire.com Today, 10:19 pm

  • Suffers first loss Wednesday
Miller (3-1) allowed a run on two hits across an inning of relief to take the loss Wednesday against the Rangers.

Advice: After starting the season with seven scoreless innings, Miller has now allowed runs in each of his last two appearances, suffering a blown save and a loss in the process. The righty still has a solid 1.93 ERA, and despite the hiccup, he should remain one of the top bullpen options for the Tigers moving forward. Rotowire.com Today, 8:28 pm

  • Strikes out six in no-decision
Skubal allowed four runs (two earned) on five hits across 6.1 innings and did not factor into the decision Wednesday against the Rangers. He walked one and struck out six.

Advice: Skubal has now given up two earned runs or fewer in three of his four starts this season, which has allowed him to post a stellar 2.28 ERA. The lefty also has 26 strikeouts across 23.2 innings, and his overall body of work makes him a very strong fantasy asset moving forward. Skubal is projected to take the mound again on Monday against the Rays, and he should be locked into lineups no matter the opponent, as he appears to be fairly matchup-proof at this point. • Strikes out five in short start
Wicks allowed two runs on five hits over 4.1 innings and did not factor into the decision Wednesday against the Diamondbacks. He walked one and struck out five.

Advice: Wicks pitched well and continued to miss bats at a solid rate, but the Cubs decided to pull him after just 74 pitches. The young lefty logged 126 innings last season across three levels, with only 34.2 of them coming in the majors, so the team is likely just being conservative with his workload in the early going. However, his 24 strikeouts in only 17 innings this year are reason for optimism moving forward. Wicks is penciled in to start again Tuesday against the Astros. Rotowire.com Today, 8:10 pm

  • Blows save, takes loss
Fairbanks (0-2) blew the save and took the loss Wednesday, allowing two runs on three hits and two walks over one inning against the Angels. He didn't generate a strikeout.

Advice: Fairbanks entered the ninth frame with a one-run advantage but was unable to come away with his fourth save of the campaign. Instead, he surrendered a pair of runs, which could have been many more as he stranded a pair of Angels in scoring position by getting Logan O'Hoppe to fly out and end the inning. Fairbanks has endured a shaky start to 2024, having given up a run in five of his eight appearances. However, Wednesday's outing marked his first blown save of the season. Rotowire.com Today, 8:02 pm
  • Falls shy of quality start
Littell didn't factor into the decision Wednesday, allowing three runs on eight hits and no walks against the Angels. He struck out seven.

Advice: Although Littell didn't walk any batters and yielded merely three runs, he was pulled at 107 pitches without being able to complete six innings. He surrendered his first home run of the campaign, being tagged by Mike Trout for a solo homer in the first inning. Littell boasts a 2.14 ERA with a 22:5 K:BB across 21.0 innings and seems to be building off his 2023 showing with Tampa Bay when he logged a 3-6 record and a 3.93 ERA in 26 appearances (14 starts). He's tentatively scheduled to face the Tigers on Monday. Rotowire.com Today, 7:55 pm

  • Picks up rare save
Garcia earned the save in Game 2 of Wednesday's doubleheader versus Kansas City after allowing a hit and a walk over two scoreless innings.

Advice: Closer Michael Kopech and setup men Jordan Leasure and Steven Wilson all pitched in Wednesday's matinee, and Garcia was called upon for the multi-inning save in Game 2. It's just the second save of Garcia's career, and the scoreless outing brings his ERA down to 7.27 and WHIP to 1.62. The 24-year-old is pitching better of late with four straight scoreless appearances, though he likely has a lot more work to do in order to be in the mix regularly for high-leverage chances. • Notches seventh save
Holmes earned the save in Wednesday's 6-4 win over the Blue Jays, allowing one hit in a scoreless ninth inning.

Advice: Holmes has yet to allow an earned run through nine appearances this year as he improved to 7-for-8 in save chances, tying Kyle Finnegan and Ryan Helsley for the league lead. The 31-year-old Holmes is establishing himself as one of the better closing options in baseball, earning a firm grasp on the ninth-inning job in New York after pitching to sub-two ERAs in each of his previous two campaigns.
