    • Gerrit Cole’s next rehab start slated for Sunday
Gerrit Cole’s second rehab start as he returns from an elbow injury will come for Double-A Somerset on Sunday.

Advice: Cole also pitched at Somerset his first time out. He’s expected to make at least one more rehab start in addition to this weekend’s. Rotoworld 33 minutes ago

    • Cubs activate Jordan Wicks ahead of Friday’s game
Cubs activated LHP Jordan Wicks from the 15-day injured list.

Advice: The Cubs could have had Wicks make one more rehab start, but they’ve brought him back now, even though they have no plans to give him a start this weekend. He’ll probably be back in the rotation next week, but he’ll be available to go long in relief tonight. Wicks allowed three runs and struck out 11 over 8 2/3 innings in his three rehab appearances. • Getting day off
Kwan is absent from the lineup for Friday's game in Miami.

Advice: The Guardians have now mixed in two off days for Kwan in the outfielder's first week back from the injured list as they ease him into things. David Fry will be the left fielder Friday and Tyler Freeman will be elevated to the leadoff spot. Rotowire.com 36 minutes ago

    • Rejoining active roster
Wicks (forearm) was reinstated from the 15-day injured list Friday, Meghan Montemurro of the Chicago Tribune reports.

Advice: Wicks will be back with the Cubs for the first time since late April after sustaining a forearm strain in his throwing arm. He's completed 3.1 innings in each of his last two rehab starts and was stretched out to 65 pitches in his latest appearance. While Wicks previously served as the Cubs' fifth starter, rookie Ben Brown has impressed as part of the rotation and could push Wicks to the bullpen. Before going down, Wicks had a 4.70 ERA across 23.0 innings. Rotowire.com 39 minutes ago
    • Loses roster spot
The Cubs optioned Hodge to Triple-A Iowa on Friday, Ryan Herrera of CHGO Sports reports.

Advice: Hodge flashed both his wipeout stuff (seven strikeouts) and control problems (four walks) during his first five major-league relief innings. He'll get another chance eventually but for now will attempt more fine-tuning at Iowa. Rotowire.com 39 minutes ago

    • Juan Soto day-to-day with forearm inflammation
Yankees manager Aaron Boone called Juan Soto day-to-day with forearm inflammation.

Advice: Tests didn’t reveal any ligament damage, so that’s good. Of course, it wouldn’t be the first time early tests failed to pick up on something, but optimism is warranted for now. Soto is not in the lineup for Friday’s game against the Dodgers, but he hasn’t been ruled out for the weekend. Rotoworld 40 minutes ago

    • Slated for bullpen next homestand
DeGrom (elbow) is slated to throw his first bullpen session since last June's Tommy John surgery during the Rangers' June 17-23 homestand, Jeff Wilson of RangersToday.com reports.

Advice: DeGrom resumed flat-ground throwing Wednesday following a scheduled de-loading period as he continues his rehab from a second Tommy John operation. The right-hander has hit all the necessary markers in his recovery so far but has many more to go. If everything goes according to plan, deGrom looks to be tracking toward a season debut sometime in August, although that's very tentative at this point. Rotowire.com 43 minutes ago

    • Not starting Friday
Seager (hamstring) is out of the lineup for Friday's game against the Giants.

Advice: The hamstring injury that caused Seager's departure from Wednesday's matchup with the Tigers is considered minor, but he'll still be out of the starting nine for at least one game. The 30-year-old is still on Texas' lineup card, per Evan Grant of The Dallas Morning News, and he isn't expected to require a trip to the injured list. Josh Smith will shift to shortstop while Ezequiel Duran receives a start at the hot corner. Rotowire.com 48 minutes ago

    • Throwing long toss
Maeda was seen throwing long toss Friday, Chris McCosky of The Detroit News reports.

Advice: Maeda was removed from his start Wednesday after just two pitches with right abdominal discomfort. McCosky also reports that Maeda reported mild soreness in hs abdomen during the session but the pain wasn't enough to prevent him from progressing toward his next start, which is scheduled for Wednesday.
