    • Boras: Wieters will be ready by Opening Day
Agent Scott Boras has said that his client, Matt Wieters (elbow), will be ready to play on Opening Day.

Advice: Orioles manager Buck Showalter said last week that it's possible Wieters won't be ready for the opener as he works his way back from Tommy John surgery, but Boras doesn't seem to think it will be an issue. The O's will no doubt take things slowly with the catcher in spring training and we likely won't know for sure until he starts playing in Grapefruit League action whether he can be penciled into the lineup on April 6 versus the Rays. • 'No urgency' for Wieters extension talks
Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe reports that "there seems no urgency on either side" when it comes to extension talks between the Orioles and Matt Wieters.

Advice: The two sides are known to have had discussions early in the 2013 season, but nothing materialized and it's looking at this point like Wieters will play out his final year before free agency. The talented backstop was limited to just 26 games last season before having Tommy John surgery, which could sideline him past Opening Day next year. Rotoworld.com

    • Return to Orioles looks unlikely for Hundley
According to Roch Kubatko of MASN Sports, Nick Hundley has a two-year offer on the table from another team, making a return to the Orioles unlikely.

Advice: The O's had been hoping to re-sign the veteran backstop to a one-year deal as an insurance policy behind Matt Wieters. In 218 at-bats between the Padres and Orioles in 2014, Hundley hit .243/.273/.358. Rotoworld.com

    • Red Sox acquire Ryan Hanigan from Padres
Red Sox acquired C Ryan Hanigan from the Padres for INF Will Middlebrooks.

Advice: The veteran backstop had a rough season offensively in 2014 but is universally praised for his defensive prowess. He'll share time behind the dish with Christian Vazquez in Boston. Rotoworld.com

    • Cubs to ink David Ross to two-year pact
FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal reports that David Ross has agreed to a two-year, $5 million contract with the Cubs

Advice: CBS Sports' Jon Heyman reported earlier Friday that Ross had signed with the Padres but then later retracted it. Ross has batted just .197/.276/.374 over the last two seasons, but his leadership and ability to handle a pitching staff is valued. Signing Ross to be Miguel Montero's backup now allows the Cubs to field offers for Welington Castillo. Rotoworld.com

    • Ryan Lavarnway claimed by Cubs off waivers
Cubs claimed 1B/C Ryan Lavarnway off waivers from the Dodgers.

Advice: Lavarnway had been claimed by the Dodgers earlier this month before being designated for assignment a week later for the second time this offseason. The 27-year-old had an injury-shortened 2014 season and isn't really a prospect anymore but is probably worth a flier. It remains to be seen how he'll fit in with the Cubs, but he makes the most sense as a third catcher/pinch-hitter. Rotoworld.com

    • David Ross doesn't have deal with Padres
David Ross told MLB Network Radio in an interview Friday that he does not have a deal with the Padres.

Advice: And CBS Sports' Jon Heyman has retracted his earlier report about Ross agreeing to terms with San Diego. It's possible Ross could still wind up with the Padres, but Heyman says he's considering the Cubs, as well. Rotoworld.com

    • Rene Rivera headed to Tampa in mega-deal
Rays acquired C Rene Rivera from the Padres in the Wil Myers trade.

Advice: Rivera has been a journeyman for much of his career but thrived when given a real shot at playing time in 2014, batting .252/.319/.432 with 11 homers while drawing rave reviews for his pitch-framing and defense. He seems unlikely to repeat his year offensively, but Rivera will be the primary catcher for the Rays. Rotoworld.com

    • Ryan Hanigan acquired by Padres
Padres acquired C Ryan Hanigan from the Rays in the Wil Myers trade.

Advice: Hanigan is expected to be flipped to the Red Sox for Will Middlebrooks. The veteran backstop hit just .218/.318/.324 in 2014, but he draws rave reviews for his defense and has shown nice on-base skills in the past. Rotoworld.com

    • David Ross expected to sign with Padres
CBS Sports' Jon Heyman reports that David Ross will sign with the Padres.

Advice: Well, of course they are. The Padres already have two viable catchers in Derek Norris and Tim Federowicz and they now have a third. Federowicz is out of options, so it would seem another trade is coming. Ross has batted just .197/.276/.374 over the last two seasons, but his leadership and ability to handle a pitching staff is valued. Rotoworld.com

    • Padres get Tim Federowicz in Kemp deal
Padres acquired C Tim Federowicz from the Dodgers in the Matt Kemp trade.

Advice: Federowicz has a strong defensive reputation but has hit just .194/.247/.300 over his first 271 big league plate appearances. With Derek Norris and Ryan Hanigan on the roster, Federowicz is headed to Triple-A to start the season. Rotoworld.com

    • Stephen Vogt has walking boot removed
Stephen Vogt had the walking boot removed from his surgically-repaired right foot Thursday.

Advice: Vogt had surgery in October to repair the plantar plates in his foot. It's an injury he dealt with throughout the second half of the season and he noted Thursday that it's the first time since July he can put a shoe on his right foot and walk without any pain. Vogt will be fine for the start of spring training. Rotoworld.com

    • Rockies sign Audry Perez to minors deal
Rockies signed C Audry Perez to a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training.

Advice: Perez appeared in one game this past season for the Cardinals. The 25-year-old catcher has a troubling .293 career on-base percentage in the minor leagues and probably won't see much action in Colorado. Rotoworld.com

White Sox signed C George Kottaras to a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training.

    • Wieters (elbow) might not be ready for opener
Orioles manager Buck Showalter said this week that Matt Wieters (elbow) might not be ready for Opening Day.

Advice: Wieters underwent Tommy John reconstructive elbow surgery in mid-June and that procedure usually requires 8-10 months of recovery time for position players. "I think Manny [Machado] makes the start of the year, and I think Matt is very close thereafter," Showalter said. "But we won’t put either one of these guys on the field until it’s time to go, and try to keep the finish line in mind." Rotoworld.com

    • Ross deciding between Red Sox, Cubs, Padres
According to WEEI's Rob Bradford, free agent catcher David Ross is deciding between the Red Sox, Cubs and Padres.

Advice: The Cubs are notable because a signing there would reunite Ross with buddy Jon Lester. Ross is 37 years old and his best days are behind him, but as a veteran backstop on a cheap deal, he provides a nice defensive presence. Rotoworld.com

    • Hedges not part of Myers deal says Bowden
ESPN's Jim Bowden reported that catching prospect Austin Hedges would not be part of a rumored Wil Myers-to-Padres trade.

Advice: Hedges is a defensive stud behind the plate, though his bat has a ways to go before it is ready for the next level. He was initially rumored to be a possible trade candidate as the Padres heated up negotiations with the Rays for Myers, but the suspected players involved now that the trade is closer to completion include the likes of Jake Bauers, Burch Smith and Joe Ross, with Hedges remaining in the Padres' organization. Indians signed C Brett Hayes to a minor league contract.

    • Sanchez to likely fill bench role for Pirates
Pirates general manager Neal Huntington said Tony Sanchez will get some work at first base and could serve as a right-handed bat off the bench next season.

Advice: When Russell Martin signed with the Blue Jays it seemed to open the door for the former top prospect, but the team doesn't appear to be confident he can handle the role of everyday catcher. He hasn't given them much reason for optimism, as Sanchez has hit just .252/.295/.378 in 135 at-bats over two major league seasons. The club will likely go with newly acquired Francisco Cervelli behind the plate instead. Rotoworld.com

    • Rays ink Bobby Wilson to minors deal
Rays signed C Bobby Wilson to a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training.

Advice: Wilson, 31, spent almost all of last season at Triple-A with the Diamondbacks, batting .267/.324/.341 with three homers over 76 games. He's merely organizational depth. Rotoworld.com
