    • Diamondbacks agree to deal with Pennington
Diamondbacks avoided arbitration with INF Cliff Pennington by agreeing to a one-year, $3.275 million contract.

Advice: The veteran infielder slashed .254/.340/.350 with a pair of homers and 10 RBI in 68 contests with the Diamondbacks in 2014. He'll reprise his utility role in 2014, serving as a fill-in option at shortstop, second base and third base. Rotoworld.com

    • Dan Uggla played through concussion in 2014
Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe reports that Dan Uggla played through an undetected concussion last season.

Advice: It's not clear when Uggla suffered the concussion, but Cafardo says the condition "was confirmed by doctors this offseason." While it's hard to entirely blame Uggla's hideous .149/.229/.213 batting line in 2014 on the concussion issue, it's certainly something worth noting. Uggla inked a minor league deal with the Nationals on Friday and could get a chance to compete for their second base job. Rotoworld.com

    • Tyler Collins could crack Opening Day roster
Anthony Fenech of the Detroit Free Press believes that Tyler Collins will claim one of the final bench spots on the Tigers' Opening Day roster.

Advice: The Tigers have been in the market for a left-handed power bat for their bench, and the best option may already be in-house with Collins. The 24-year-old outfielder hit .263/.335/.423 with 18 homers and 62 RBI in 121 contests at Triple-A Toledo in 2014. Rotoworld.com

    • Rafael Furcal suffers torn hamstring
Dionisio Soldevila of ESPNDeportes.com reports that Rafael Furcal will miss the Dominican Winter League playoffs after tearing his hamstring.

Advice: It's not clear which hamstring he tore, but it's obviously bad news for Furcal after he missed nearly all of the 2014 season with left hamstring issues. A timetable for his rehab isn't known at this time, but it would now seem unlikely that Furcal is able to land a contract before spring training. The 37-year-old infielder has played just nine games over the last two seasons due to injury. Rotoworld.com

    • Clint Robinson signs on with Nationals
Nationals signed 1B Clint Robinson to a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training.

Advice: Robinson spent almost all of last season at Triple-A with the Dodgers, batting .312/.401/.534 with 18 homers and 80 RBI. He's merely organizational depth. Rotoworld.com

    • Pierzynski getting $2 million from Braves
CBS Sports' Jon Heyman reports that A.J. Pierzynski will make a base salary of $2 million in his one-year contract with the Braves.

Advice: He'll have the opportunity to make more through incentives. Pierzynski will serve as Christian Bethancourt's backup in 2015 after batting .251/.288/.337 over 362 plate appearances last season for the Red Sox and Cardinals. Rotoworld.com

    • Nationals sign Dan Uggla to minor league deal
Nationals signed 2B Dan Uggla to a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training.

Advice: General manager Mike Rizzo has history with Uggla, as he drafted him back in 2001 when he was Director of Scouting for the Diamondbacks. Uggla will turn 35 in March and batted just .149/.229/.213 in 157 plate appearances last season. There's a good possibility he's done, but he did at least land in a good spot, as the Nats have an opening at second base. That said, it's unlikely that they're done shopping for upgrades at the position. Rotoworld.com

    • D'Backs re-sign Pacheco to minors contract
Diamondbacks re-signed INF/C Jordan Pacheco to a minor league contract.

Advice: The deal includes an invitation to spring training, where Pacheco should have a good shot at an Opening Day roster spot. The 28-year-old batted just .272/.298/.321 in 47 games this past season for Arizona, but he can play catcher and third base. Rotoworld.com

    • Rockies sign Roger Bernadina to minors deal
Rockies signed OF Roger Bernadina to a minor league contract.

Advice: Bernadina batted just .167/.304/.258 in 80 plate appearances this season between the Reds and Dodgers and for his career he's hit just .236/.307/.354. The 30-year-old is doubtful to have a significant impact for the Rockies, who have a ton of outfield depth. Rotoworld.com

    • Carlos Gonzalez (knee) cleared to swing bat
Carlos Gonzalez (knee) announced Wednesday that he has been cleared to begin hitting.

Advice: Gonzalez is coming off surgery in August to repair the patella tendon in his left knee, which had bothered him dating back to 2013. The 29-year-old could be a little behind at the start of spring training, but the hope is that he'll be ready for Opening Day. Rotoworld.com

    • Braves, Pierzynski agree to one-year contract
Mark Bowman of MLB.com reports that the Braves and A.J. Pierzynski have agreed to a one-year contract, pending a physical.

Advice: Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez apparently let the cat out of the bag while at a Honeybaked Ham on Wednesday and Bowman was able to confirm the story's validity. We're not kidding. Pierzynski, 37, batted just .251/.288/.337 in 362 plate appearances this past season between the Red Sox and Cardinals and should back up young Christian Bethancourt in 2015. The deal is expected to become official after January 1. Rotoworld.com

    • Report: O's re-sign Delmon Young to 1-yr deal
MASN Sports' Roch Kubatko reports that the Orioles have re-signed Delmon Young to a one-year contract, pending a physical.

Advice: He'll be guaranteed $2.25 million and can reach $3 million with incentives. The physical is expected to be completed after January 1. Young hoped to find a multi-year deal after batting .302/.337/.442 with seven home runs and 30 RBI in 83 games with Baltimore this past season, but he ultimately lowered his demands to stick around for another year. The 29-year-old figures to see part-time at-bats again between the DH spot and left field. Rotoworld.com

    • Cubs, Ross finalize two-year, $5 million deal
Cubs signed C David Ross to a two-year, $5 million contract.

Advice: The deal was agreed to last Friday and then finalized Tuesday evening after Ross passed his pre-signing physical. Ross has batted just .197/.276/.374 in 287 plate appearances since the beginning of the 2013 season, but the Cubs clearly value his defense and veteran leadership. The 37-year-old should be Miguel Montero's primary backup in 2015. Rotoworld.com

    • Brewers claim Shane Peterson off waivers
Brewers claimed OF/1B Shane Peterson off waivers from the Cubs.

Advice: Peterson has been the proverbial hot potato over the last two weeks, as he's bounced from the Athletics to the Cubs and now to the Brewers. He's a second-round pick who has flashed a decent bat in the minors, hitting .308/.381/.460 in Triple-A in 2014. While he doesn't have much major league experience, he's still just 26 and his bat should eventually offer him chances at the next level. Rotoworld.com

    • Orioles claim Lavarnway off of waivers
Orioles claimed 1B/C Ryan Lavarnway off waivers from the Cubs.

Advice: While Matt Wieters (elbow) is hopeful that he'll be ready to start on Opening Day, the Orioles added depth at catcher in the form of Lavarnway. He'll join Steve Clevenger and Caleb Joseph as potential starters should Wieters be unable to go. Lavarnway was once a somewhat promising prospect, but that talent has yet to translate to the majors, as he's hit only .208/.389/.370 over the course of his career. Rotoworld.com

    • Nationals sign Ian Stewart to minors deal
Nationals signed 3B Ian Stewart to a minor league contract.

Advice: Stewart was recently with the Angels, but elected to become a free agent in October after the team outrighted him to Triple A. He appeared in 24 games in 2014, hitting just .176/.22/.382 with two homers and seven RBI. While the numbers aren't great, Stewart has the opportunity to compete for a backup role behind starter Anthony Rendon. Rotoworld.com

    • Hannahan signs with LG Twins of South Korea
According to Darren Wolfson of 1500 ESPN, free agent INF Jack Hannahan has agreed to a $1 million contract with South Korea's LG Twins.

Advice: Hannahan could possibly have found himself a minor league deal, as the (Minnesota) Twins were reportedly somewhat interested in him in mid-December, but he instead opted to sign in South Korea. Hannahan missed most of the 2014 season after undergoing shoulder surgery. He appeared in 26 games and hit .188/.220/.250. Rotoworld.com

    • Cubs to ink David Ross to two-year pact
FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal reports that David Ross has agreed to a two-year, $5 million contract with the Cubs

Advice: CBS Sports' Jon Heyman reported earlier Friday that Ross had signed with the Padres but then later retracted it. Ross has batted just .197/.276/.374 over the last two seasons, but his leadership and ability to handle a pitching staff is valued. Signing Ross to be Miguel Montero's backup now allows the Cubs to field offers for Welington Castillo. Rotoworld.com

    • Ryan Lavarnway claimed by Cubs off waivers
Cubs claimed 1B/C Ryan Lavarnway off waivers from the Dodgers.

Advice: Lavarnway had been claimed by the Dodgers earlier this month before being designated for assignment a week later for the second time this offseason. The 27-year-old had an injury-shortened 2014 season and isn't really a prospect anymore but is probably worth a flier. It remains to be seen how he'll fit in with the Cubs, but he makes the most sense as a third catcher/pinch-hitter. Rotoworld.com

    • Shane Peterson claimed by Cubs
Cubs claimed OF/1B Shane Peterson off waivers from the Athletics.

Advice: Peterson had been designated for assignment last week. The former second-round pick has limited experience in the majors but batted .308/.381/.460 this past season at Triple-A. He could be an option for the Cubs' bench. Rotoworld.com

ESPN's Jerry Crasnick reports that the Phillies are "kicking the tires" on Rafael Furcal.

Advice: Freddy Galvis is expected to take over at shortstop following the trade of Jimmy Rollins, but Furcal could be added as a backup option. The 37-year-old infielder was limited to just nine games for the Marlins this season due to leg issues after missing all of 2013 following Tommy John surgery. Rotoworld.com

    • David Ross expected to sign with Padres
CBS Sports' Jon Heyman reports that David Ross will sign with the Padres.

Advice: Well, of course they are. The Padres already have two viable catchers in Derek Norris and Tim Federowicz and they now have a third. Federowicz is out of options, so it would seem another trade is coming. Ross has batted just .197/.276/.374 over the last two seasons, but his leadership and ability to handle a pitching staff is valued. Rotoworld.com
