      Mikolas came away with a no-decision in Wednesday's 5-4 extra-inning loss to the Pirates, giving up two runs on five hits over six innings. He struck out four without walking a batter.

      Advice: It was a vintage performance from the right-hander and a strong rebound from a 10-run disaster against the Reds his last time out. Mikolas delivered his 10th quality start of the season on an efficient 87 pitches (61 strikes) but left the mound on the hook for his eighth loss, until the Cards tied the game at 3-3 in the eighth inning. Even with last week's implosion, he sports a respectable 4.30 ERA, 1.04 WHIP and 40:11 K:BB through 58.2 innings over his last 10 starts.       Kikuchi allowed two runs on five hits and two walks while striking out five batters over 5.2 innings in a no-decision against Houston on Wednesday.

      Advice: Kikuchi gave up just one run through five frames before serving up a solo shot to Yordan Alvarez in the sixth. The southpaw got two more outs in the inning but was pulled one out shy of a quality start following a Jeremy Pena double. Despite that disappointment, this was a positive outing for Kikuchi after he had given up 13 runs across 11 frames over his final three starts of June. The hurler has fallen off after a strong start to the campaign -- across his past eight appearances, he has just one quality start while registering a 6.50 ERA, 1.61 WHIP and 37:10 K:BB across 36 innings.     • Yusei Kikuchi chased in sixth inning
      Yusei Kikuchi allowed two earned runs in 5 2/3 innings on Wednesday against the Astros. He struck out five and walked two in a no-decision.

      Advice: Kikuchi was cruising right along until the sixth inning when Yordan Alvarez smacked a lead-off homer and Jeremy Peña’s two-out double forced him from the game. Those who play in quality start leagues will surely be frustrated, but Kikuchi still had a solid start.       Miles Mikolas struck out four and allowed two runs over six innings on Wednesday in a no-decision against the Pirates.

      Advice: Mikolas was long gone before this one was decided in extra innings, but he still managed to get through six frames without any major implosions, unlike his last time out when he was torched for 10 runs (nine earned) over 4 1/3 innings against the Reds.       Kyle Harrison (ankle) will throw a bullpen session on Tuesday.

      Advice: Harrison isn’t expected to require a minor league rehab assignment before returning to San Francisco’s starting rotation mix after suffering a right ankle sprain back in mid-June.     • MacKenzie Gore denied win after strong showing
      MacKenzie Gore allowed one run over 5 2/3 innings and struck out eight Monday against the Mets.

      Advice: Gore was at 104 pitches, so it’s kind or understandable that he was pulled in the sixth. Still, he seemed to be very much in control at that point. He’d given up just a soft single before rebounding to retire the next two batters in the sixth. The Nationals pulled him with a 2-0 lead in favor of Derek Law, and the Mets, aided by a CJ Abrams error, went on to score three runs in the frame. That Gore didn’t get a win will probably save the Nationals about $100,000 in arbitration this winter, so they have that going for them. Rotoworld Monday, 7:32 pm

      Gore did not factor into the decision in Monday's 9-7 loss to the Mets, allowing one run on five hits and one walk over 5.2 innings. He struck out eight.

      Advice: The Washington southpaw created an incredible 21 whiffs to collect his eight punchouts, and he left the game with the Nationals ahead 2-0 only to watch Derek Law immediately cough up the lead. This was a bounce-back performance for Gore as he struggled in five June starts with a 5.13 ERA across 26.1 innings. The 25-year-old's season ERA now stands at 3.47 with 107:29 K:BB over 90.2 innings. He is tentatively scheduled to make his next outing against the Cardinals at home this weekend.     • Report: White Sox intend to trade Garrett Crochet
      USA Today’s Bob Nightengale reported that “the White Sox intend to trade [Garrett Crochet] by the July 30 trade deadline.”

      Advice: According to Nightengale, the White Sox “quietly engaged in brief contract extension talks” with Crochet,” but there is “no optimism towards reaching an agreement,” so the team is now intent on moving him. As of now, the White Sox have allegedly had 15 teams call to express interest in Crochet, who is making just $800,000 and is under team control through 2026. Some potential concerns surrounding the left-hander are just how much he’ll pitch over the summer after having already thrown 21 more innings than his entire career total heading into this season. There are some additional concerns about whether “a team acquiring Crochet may have to offer a contract extension for him to lift those innings restrictions in the second half because of the potential of an injury risk.” We should get more clarity on Crochet’s market over the next couple of weeks, but he seems like a strong bet to be dealt.       Severino did not factor into the decision Sunday, allowing four runs on eight hits and a walk over seven innings against the Astros. He struck out three.

      Advice: Severino was highly efficient if not incredibly effective, needing just 79 pitches to complete seven innings despite allowing four runs and nine baserunners while throwing a first-pitch strike to just 13 of 28 batters. He also struck out only three after fanning a season-high 10 batters in his previous outing. It's the fifth consecutive start in which he's gone at least six innings, though it's the second time within those starts that he allowed at least four earned runs.
