• Victorious in Arizona debut
Montgomery (1-0) earned the win Friday, allowing one run, four hits and no walks over six innings against the Giants. He struck out three.

Advice: Montgomery looked sharp in his season debut, stifling the Giants all night and allowing just four baserunners. The left-hander wasn't even at his peak as his fastball velocity averaged 93.3 mph, down 1.7 mph from last year's average. However, given that Montgomery signed with Arizona on March 29, he still has some work to get into midseason form. His next start is scheduled to be at home against his former team, the Cardinals. • Lit up for five runs
Snell (0-3) took the loss Friday against Arizona, allowing five runs on nine hits and one walk over 4.2 innings. He struck out three.

Advice: Snell continued to look rusty in his outing Friday, allowing nine hits, a mark he hasn't reached since a June 16, 2021 start against in Colorado. The 31-year-old lefty has struggled tremendously out of the gate, generating an 11.57 ERA, 1.97 WHIP and 12:5 K:BB in 11.2 innings. Snell looks to get back on track in his next start, slated to be against the Mets at home. Rotowire.com 9 minutes ago

  • Jordan Montgomery goes six strong in season debut
Jordan Montgomery held the Giants to just one run over six innings to pick up a win Friday.

Advice: Montgomery didn’t have to be at his best with the Diamondbacks giving him 17 runs of support, but the left-hander was excellent on his own in his first start of 2024. He landed 54-of-78 pitches for strikes, and while he “only” procured three strikeouts, he was able to limit the hard contact and remind how he was such an excellent option in 2023. Montgomery showed zero rust in this one, and he’ll be back on the bump for his second start Wednesday in a start against the Cardinals, one of his former teams. Rotoworld 32 minutes ago
  • Blake Snell gives up five in loss to Diamondbacks
Blake Snell was charged for five runs on nine hits while going 4 2/3 innings in a loss to the Diamondbacks on Friday.

Advice: Snell issued just one walk with three strikeouts. It’s another disappointing effort for the 2023 Cy Young Award winner, and the good news for fantasy managers is two-fold: There’s a lot of baseball left, and Snell has a history of pitching ineffectively to start a season only to put things together. The bad news is that doesn’t help very much right now, and his ERA over his first three starts with San Francisco is 11.57. His next start comes Wednesday against the Mets. • Shohei Ohtani steals base, drives in run in loss
Shohei Ohtani went 1-for-4 with an RBI and stolen base Friday against the Mets.

Advice: That swipe is already the fifth of the season for Ohtani. The RBI came in the fifth inning on a run-scoring single. The two-time MVP has been just dandy with the bat in his first season with the Dodgers with a slash of .356/.400/.622 across 90 at-bats through the first 22 games of 2024. • Coughs up five runs in loss
Waldron (0-2) took the loss Friday, allowing five runs on seven hits and one walk over 4.2 innings against Toronto. He struck out two.

Advice: After allowing a first inning solo homer to Justin Turner, Waldron ran into a world of trouble in the second inning. The Blue Jays kept putting the ball in play, collecting five hits and four runs off the Padres starter in the inning. Waldron has pitched to the tune of a 4.74 ERA and 1.53 WHIP over his first 19 innings. His next start is scheduled to be on the road against Colorado. Rotowire.com 38 minutes ago

  • Sean Manaea holds Dodgers to two runs over five
Sean Manaea held the Dodgers to two runs over five innings, but didn’t qualify for a decision Friday.

Advice: Manaea was awful against the Royals in his last start with eight runs — six earned — over 3 2/3 innings to show for it, but he was much better against the loaded Dodgers’ lineup because that’s just how this sport works. The left-hander was a bit fortunate to allow just the pair as he gave up four hits and issued three walks, but credit to the veteran for being able to get out of jams. For the most part, anyway. Manaea will take a 4.12 ERA into his start Wednesday against the Padres — a former employer of the southpaw. Rotoworld 40 minutes ago

  • Strikes out seven in no-decision
Rodriguez did not factor into the decision Friday against San Diego, allowing one run on three hits and one walk over four innings. He struck out seven.

Advice: Rodriguez flashed his swing-and-miss stuff for the second straight start, striking out seven and generating 11 whiffs in his short outing. The 27-year-old rookie sports a 2.35 ERA, 1.30 WHIP and 13:3 K:BB in his first 7.2 innings. Rodriguez has pitched well enough to likely maintain his rotation spot for another start, scheduled to be on the road against the Royals. Rotowire.com 40 minutes ago
  • Justin Verlander bests Nationals in 2024 debut
Justin Verlander beat the Nationals in his season debut Friday, pitching six innings of two-run ball in the Astros’ 5-3 victory.

Advice: Verlander topped out at 95.0 mph tonight and got just four missed swings, but he induced plenty of soft contact and the one homer he allowed, a 402-foot shot to center from Riley Adams, would have exited only four ballparks, according to Statcast. We’ll chalk this up as an encouraging first start back. Verlander is hardly a lock to remain healthy going forward, but he ought to be viewed as a top-30 SP now that he’s back.
