• Sitting in third straight game
Riley (side) is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Cubs, Justin Toscano of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports.

Advice: He'll miss out on a third straight start while he manages left side inflammation, but with the benefit of some added rest in the form of a team off day Thursday, Riley could be healthy enough to rejoin the starting nine for Friday's series opener versus the Padres. Zack Short will make another start at third base in Riley's place Wednesday. Rotowire.com 3 minutes ago

  • Brett Baty not in Mets lineup on Wednesday night
Brett Baty is not in the Mets’ starting lineup for Wednesday night’s battle against the Phillies.

Advice: Baty will take a seat on the pine with tough left-hander Ranger Suarez toeing the slab for the Phillies on Wednesday night. The recently recalled Mark Vientos will start in his place at third base and will bat fifth for the Mets. Rotoworld 10 minutes ago

  • Maikel Garcia getting a night off on Wednesday
Maikel Garcia is absent from the Royals’ starting lineup for Wednesday evening’s matchup against the Mariners.

Advice: The 24-year-old infielder has been scuffling a bit at the plate as of late, so perhaps a day off to clear his head will do him some good. On the season, he’s slashing .239/.288/.369 with four homers, 25 RBI and 10 stolen bases through his first 43 games. Adam Frazier will start at the hot corner and hit leadoff against Bryan Woo and the Mariners on Wednesday night in Seattle. Rotoworld 13 minutes ago

  • Transferred to 60-day IL
The Athletics transferred Hernaiz (ankle) to the 60-day injured list Wednesday.

Advice: The transaction frees up a spot on the 40-man roster for the addition of Aaron Brooks, who is starting Wednesday's game versus the Astros. Hernaiz suffered a severe left ankle sprain a week ago and now won't be eligible to return until early July. Rotowire.com 22 minutes ago

  • A’s shift Darell Hernaiz to 60-day IL
Athletics transferred INF Darell Hernaiz from the 15-day to the 60-day injured list.

Advice: That must be a pretty bad ankle sprain that Hernaiz suffered last week. The A’s are currently rolling with Max Schuemann as their everyday shortstop. Rotoworld 38 minutes ago

  • Back on bench Wednesday
Merrifield is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Mets.

Advice: With Bryce Harper (migraine) and Kyle Schwarber (back) both missing time in recent days, Merrifield was one of the main beneficiaries. He started in seven of the previous eight games while manning three different positions, but Merrifield provided just three hits over 32 at-bats over that stretch to bring his batting average down to .188. Both Harper and Schwarber are simultaneously in the lineup for the first time since last Friday, so Merrifield will retreat to the bench and will most likely be in store for a reduction in playing time moving forward. • Draws start at second base Tuesday
Caminero made his first start of the season at second base with Triple-A Durham on Tuesday.

Advice: It came on the same day Brandon Lowe visited a specialist due to continued concerns with his right oblique. Lowe ultimately received good news and the expectation is that he will be able to resume his rehab assignment soon. However, it's notable that the Rays seem to be prepping Caminero as a contingency plan at second base, a position he hadn't started a game at since 2022. Caminero went 3-for-6 with a home run in Tuesday's contest and is slashing a robust .316/.385/.582 with seven long balls on the season. Prior to Tuesday, he had been exclusively playing third base for Durham. The top prospect is certainly pushing for a promotion sooner rather than later. Rotowire.com Today, 12:07 pm

  • Cleared for activity
Walls (hip) reported to the Rays' spring training facility in Port Charlotte, Fla. earlier this week and will go through workouts for the next 10-to-14 days before beginning a rehab assignment, Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times reports.

Advice: According to Topkin, Walls will be going through a modified version of his own spring training while he builds up stamina and stacks up at-bats as he works his way back from the surgery he required last October to address a labral tear in his right hip. The Rays opted to shut Walls down in late April for two weeks after he experienced renewed inflammation in his hip, and the 27-year-old seemingly responded well to the extra time off. Since he's been on the injured list all season, Walls will presumably in store for an extended minor-league rehab assignment, making it unlikely that he's activated before the end of May. Whenever he's ready to go, Walls could threaten Jose Caballero for everyday duties at shortstop. Rotowire.com Today, 12:04 pm

  • Five innings on defense Tuesday
Diaz (calf) started at third base and played five innings in Triple-A Las Vegas' win over El Paso on Tuesday, going 1-for-3 with an RBI single.

Advice: Diaz picked up the first hit of his three-game rehab stint on his final at-bat of the evening, and he took another step in the right direction by logging five frames on defense for the second straight game. The veteran is likely to continue taking a day off between appearances for the moment as his ramp-up following a long layoff continues. Rotowire.com Today, 11:58 am
