• Max Scherzer could make ’24 debut in early May
The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal reports Max Scherzer (back) could return in early May.

Advice: Scherzer is scheduled to face hitters again on Friday in a 40-pitch live batting practice session and could progress to a minor league rehab assignment shortly afterwards. The 39-year-old veteran righty has made a rapid recovery from offseason back surgery, which was originally expected to keep him on the shelf until late June. It might be too optimistic to expect him to make his season debut in early May, but it can’t be completely ruled out at this juncture. It certainly sounds like he’s going to return to the Rangers’ starting rotation at some point next month. Rotoworld Yesterday, 6:23 pm

  • Triston McKenzie pitching with torn elbow ligament
The Athletic’s Zack Meisel and Jason Lloyd report Triston McKenzie is pitching through a torn ligament in his right elbow.

Advice: McKenzie opted for the rest and rehabilitation route last year instead of undergoing Tommy John surgery, and insists that he isn’t feeling any pain this season. However, his on-field results have been utterly abysmal with a bloated 6.23 ERA, 1.77 WHIP and 5/12 K/BB ratio across 13 innings (three starts). The biggest concerns for fantasy managers are that his fastball velocity (90.9 mph) is down nearly two miles-per-hour from two seasons ago (92.5 mph) when he was completely healthy and he’s walked nearly 20 percent of the batters he’s faced so far. Simply put, McKenzie’s early season performance has been alarming, but there appears to be a possible explanation. Fantasy managers should expect Cleveland to continue carefully managing his workload and hope that his stuff rebounds in the coming weeks. Rotoworld Yesterday, 4:01 pm

  • Hits go-ahead homer in Game 1
Perez (groin) went 1-for-4 with a two-run home run in a 4-2 win over the White Sox in the first game of Wednesday's doubleheader.

Advice: Perez returned from a Grade 1 left groin strain Wednesday and delivered the key hit in the Royals' matinee win. He also went 0-for-2 with two walks in the nightcap while serving as the designated hitter. He appears good to go moving forward after the injury scare. The veteran catcher is off to a hot start with five homers, 17 RBI, nine runs scored and two doubles while slashing .324/.370/.574 over 18 contests this season. Rotowire.com Yesterday, 10:27 am

  • Keeps slugging Wednesday
Henderson went 2-for-4 with a solo home run in Wednesday's 4-2 win over the Twins.

Advice: Henderson has six homers on the year, including one in each of the last three games. He's also posted four straight multi-hit efforts. The shortstop is thriving as the leadoff hitter in a strong offense, slashing .288/.346/.603 with four stolen bases, 15 RBI and 13 runs scored through 18 contests overall. • Getting breather Thursday
Paredes is out of the lineup for Thursday's game against the Angels.

Advice: Paredes will get his second day off of the season after starting in 18 of the Rays' first 19 contests. With Paredes on the bench Thursday, Curtis Mead will pick up a start at third base. Rotowire.com Yesterday, 6:54 am

  • Homers twice Wednesday
Varsho went 2-for-4 with a pair of home runs and three RBI in Wednesday's 6-4 loss to the Yankees.

Advice: Varsho opened the scoring with a two-run shot off Marcus Stroman in the second inning before extending Toronto's lead to 3-1 with a second homer off left-hander Caleb Ferguson in the seventh. The 27-year-old Varsho has heated up after a slow start to the year, going 8-for-25 (.320) with four homers in his last eight games. Overall, he's slashing .218/.295/.473 through his first 61 plate appearances this season. Rotowire.com Wednesday, 8:10 pm
  • Clubs pair of homers
Schwarber went 2-for-5 with a two-run home run and a solo home run during Wednesday's 7-6 win over the Rockies.

Advice: Schwarber notched his first multi-homer game of the season -- a feat he accomplished three times in the 2023 regular season -- with the solo homer coming off Ryan Feltner in the first inning and the two-run shot coming at the expense of Peter Lambert in the sixth. The performance came on the heels of three straight games without a hit (0-for-11), pushing Schwarber out of the mini-slump. Rotowire.com Wednesday, 6:48 pm

  • Kyle Schwarber homers twice in win over Rockies
Kyle Schwarber went 2-for-4 with two homers and three RBI to power the Phillies to a 7-6 win over the Rockies on Wednesday.

Advice: Schwarber put the Phillies on the board right away with a solo homer off Ryan Feltner to lead off the first inning. He connected once again in the sixth, taking Peter Lambert deep for a two-run shot. The 31-year-old slugger is up to five homers with 13 runs scored and nine RBI while slashing .233/.325/.438 across 83 plate appearances. Rotoworld Wednesday, 6:10 pm

  • Sharp against Bucs on Wednesday
Severino (2-1) picked up the win Wednesday in a 9-1 victory over the Pirates, allowing one unearned run on five hits and three walks over six innings. He struck out four.

Advice: Henry Davis reached base to lead off the third inning on a catcher's interference call against Francisco Alvarez and came around to score, but that was the only damage on Severino's line. The right-hander produced his first quality start of the season on 96 pitches (61 strikes), and his 2.14 ERA comes with a 21:9 K:BB through four outings and 21 innings. Severino will take the mound next on the road early next week in San Francisco. Rotowire.com Wednesday, 5:58 pm
