Clay Holmes escapes with save on Friday night
Clay Holmes walked the tightrope in the ninth inning on Friday night, but managed to slam the door on the Rays to protect a two-run lead and earn his eighth save of the season.
Advice: Holmes started his frame by allowing back-to-back singles to Ben Rortvedt and Yandy Diaz to bring the go-ahead run to the plate. He then got Randy Arozarena to hit into a strange fielder’s choice where the umpire had ruled that Aaron Judge caught his pop fly in the outfield, which led Rortvedt to head back to second base — and he was ultimately thrown out at third as the ball dropped in. Holmes then got Richie Palacios to line into a game-ending double play to escape with the lead intact. He has been terrific so far this season, compiling a 1.29 WHIP and 6/1 K/BB ratio over 9 1/3 innings of shutout baseball to go along with a win and eight saves.
