    According to MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand, the Guardians have signed LHP Matthew Boyd to a major league deal, pending a physical.

    Advice: The Boyd Boys are back in business. The left-hander held a showcase with 17 teams on June 8th when he was a little over 11 months removed from Tommy John surgery. He was reportedly sitting 92-93 with his fastball, which was enough to win over the Guardians. The 33-year-old was 5-5 with a 5.45 ERA in 15 starts for the Tigers last season before undergoing surgery, and will almost certainly require a handful of rehab starts before he threatens to take the job of anybody in the Guardians’ rotation.     Phillies recalled RHP Yunior Marte from Triple-A Lehigh Valley.

    Advice: Marte was activated off the IL on Tuesday and optioned to Triple-A, but it will be a short stay as he makes his way back to the MLB roster to take the place of Spencer Turnbull, who was placed on the 15-day IL.     Phillies manager Rob Thomson said after Wednesday's game that Mercado would likely join the rotation if Spencer Turnbull (lat) needed to miss time, Scott Lauber of The Philadelphia Inquirer reports.

    Advice: Turnbull has since been placed on the 15-day injured list, so it would appear Mercado is set to join the Phillies' rotation next week. Mercado made one one-inning relief appearance earlier this week in his major-league debut, but he's been used mostly as a starter this season at Triple-A Lehigh Valley, collecting a 1.71 ERA and 44:23 K:BB over 47.1 frames covering 10 starts and four relief outings.     Phillies placed RHP Spencer Turnbull on the 15-day IL with a right lat strain.

He wanted to tell the Phillies as soon as he felt anything to make sure he didn’t aggravate the soreness he was feeling. There is no timeline yet for his recovery, but Phillies manager Rob Thomson said that Michael Mercado would be the number five starter if Turnbull had to miss time.
