    Advice: Geraldo Perdomo's knee injury presented an opportunity for Alexander, and while the infielder has hit well, his fielding could cost him starts. He had miscues during the team's road trip in Atlanta, which prompted a meeting with manager Torey Lovullo, who reassured the shortstop that he loves his game but there's work to do. Infield coach Tony Perezchica is confident in Alexander's range but emphasized the need to make the routine plays. Thus far, Alexander hasn't let the defense affect his offense (.286/.359/.457).     Advice: Abrams led off the game with a double, reached third base on a groundout and scored on a Tyler Glasnow wild pitch. He added a solo homer off Tyler Glasnow in the third inning to round out a productive night. Abrams has gone 5-for-13 over his past three games, with all five of his hits during that span going for extra bases. Overall, he's slashing .250/.319/.516 with four long balls, 11 RBI, 11 runs scored, four stolen bases, two triples and a double through 16 games as Baltimore's leadoff hitter.     Advice: Arias came up a home run short of a cycle, but it was still another excellent game for the utility man. He's gone 6-for-10 over his last three contests, with four of those hits going for extra bases. Monday's strong performance lifted his batting average to .308, and he's added a stolen base, five RBI and five runs scored through 27 plate appearances. Arias doesn't have a path to everyday at-bats yet, but he's putting the pressure on Brayan Rocchio, as shortstop has been the weak spot in the Guardians' infield so far.     Advice: Rocchio has just two hits over his last six contests, but he was able to draw a walk Monday for the first time since April 4. He's maintained the starting job at shortstop through his recent slump, though Gabriel Arias is starting to hit well and could pose a threat to Rocchio's playing time.   • Nico Hoerner comes through late in Cubs’ win
    Nico Hoerner scored the tying run in the ninth and drove in the go-ahead run in the 11th as the Cubs edged the Diamondbacks 3-2 on Monday.

    Advice: Hoerner singled in the ninth, advanced to second on another second and then scored the tying run on a wild pitch, never hesitating as he rounded third. In all, he reached three times tonight, giving him a .371 OBP in spite of a .208 average. The Cubs opted to move Dansby Swanson up in the lineup, rather than Hoerner, with Seiya Suzuki going on the IL, but maybe they’ll reconsider.   • CJ Abrams homers, doubles to lead Nationals
    CJ Abrams collected his fourth homer and his third double in the Nationals’ 6-4 defeat of the Dodgers on Monday.

    Advice: It was reasonable to question whether Abrams would improve on last year’s total of 18 homers or perhaps regress there some, given his modest exit velocity numbers, but he’s hitting the ball harder this year and getting results.     Jackson Merrill went 3-for-5 with two RBI and one stolen base on Monday, leading the Padres to a 7-3 victory over the Brewers.

    Advice: Merrill served as San Diego’s primary offensive catalyst in this one, extending their lead to a commanding three-run margin with a two-run single off Brewers starter Joe Ross in the fifth inning as part of a three-hit effort. The 20-year-old top prospect has gotten off to a sublime start this season, batting .356 (21-for-59) with 12 runs scored, one homer, seven RBI and three steals across 19 games.
