    • Report: Padres pursuing trade for Garrett Crochet
      The Athletic’s Dennis Lin and Ken Rosenthal report the Padres have shown strong interest in trade discussions for White Sox left-hander Garrett Crochet.

      Advice: Here we go. No word on how close a potential deal may be, but it’s worth noting the two sides struck a deal a few months ago centered around White Sox ace Dylan Cease and appear to be circling another potential blockbuster. San Diego’s starting pitching depth took a serious hit last weekend with Yu Darvish (groin) and Joe Musgrove (elbow) landing on the injured list so it wouldn’t be shocking to see Padres general manager AJ Preller getting aggressive to fill the void. Crochet is in the midst of an unexpected breakout campaign with a stellar 3.49 ERA, 0.93 WHIP and 93/15 K/BB ratio across 69 2/3 innings (13 starts).       Gausman (4-4) took the loss Monday against Baltimore, allowing six earned runs on six hits and one walk in 6.1 innings. He struck out three.

      Advice: Gausman gave up three home runs Monday after allowing just two over his past nine starts. The 33-year-old had notched three-consecutive quality starts prior to Monday's setback, but he has been unable to find his footing this season. Through 60.2 innings, Gasuman holds a 4.60 ERA and a 1.34 WHIP, both of which are his worst since 2019.       Wheeler (7-3) earned the win Monday against Milwaukee, allowing one earned run on five hits and three walks over seven innings. He struck out six.

      Advice: Wheeler nearly pitched seven shutout innings, but he surrendered a solo home run to former teammate Rhys Hoskins with two outs in the seventh inning. Wheeler turned in his fourth consecutive quality start Monday, bringing his season total to 10. Wheeler has pitched to a 2.23 ERA and 0.97 WHIP with 91 strikeouts in 80.2 innings this season, all of which rank top 10 in the league.       Kevin Gausman allowed six runs in 6 1/3 innings and took the loss against the Orioles on Monday.

      Advice: Gausman gave up six hits, walked one and struck out three. He had thrown three quality starts in a row, but couldn’t keep the momentum going against the Orioles. Gausman had allowed five home runs in 11 previous starts, but gave up a home run to Anthony Santander and two home runs to Austin Hays. His ERA is now 4.60 on the season.       Zack Wheeler yielded one run over seven innings on Monday in a win over the Brewers.

      Advice: Wheeler carried a shutout bid into the seventh inning before coughing up a solo shot to former teammate Rhys Hoskins and wound up requiring a season-high 114 pitches (67 strikes) to navigate seven frames. He finished with six strikeouts and also handed out a trio of free passes. The 34-year-old right-hander has been one of the most consistent upper-echelon fantasy starters in the game for the last few years and hasn’t skipped a beat this season, allowing three earned runs or fewer in 11 of his 13 outings. He’ll carry a sparkling 2.23 ERA, 0.97 WHIP and 91/26 K/BB ratio across 80 2/3 innings (13 starts) into a road tilt next Tuesday against the Red Sox at historic Fenway Park.       Peralta (4-3) allowed three runs on four hits and a walk over five innings Sunday, striking out seven and earning a win over the White Sox.

      Advice: Peralta coughed up two runs in the first inning before Paul DeJong knocked a solo shot in the fourth. It was Peralta's first win since April 30 after he went 0-3 with a 4.08 ERA in five May starts. He racked up 21 swinging strikes, matching the season high that he set in his last appearance. He's registered an impressive 39:6 K:BB over his last five starts, improving his season mark to 89:21. Peralta will carry a 3.74 ERA into his next matchup, which is projected to be in Detroit.       Holmes threw a scoreless inning to earn a save against the Giants on Sunday.

      Advice: Holmes quickly finished off the 7-5 win Sunday, needing just 12 pitches to retire San Francisco's 2-3-4 hitters in order. He began the year without allowing an earned run through 20 innings before coughing up four in a brutal outing against Seattle on May 20.       Clay Holmes slammed the door on the Giants in the ninth inning on Sunday, protecting a two-run lead to earn his 17th save of the season.

      Advice: The Yankees rallied for four runs off of Giants’ closer Camilo Doval in the top half of the ninth inning to take the lead and Holmes did his job to make sure that it stood up. He needed just 12 pitches (eight strikes) to retire Brett Wisely, Wilmer Flores and Matt Chapman in order to end it. The 31-year-old hurler has been spectacular this season, compiling a 1.37 ERA, 1.25 WHIP and a 27/8 K/BB ratio across 26 1/3 innings while nabbing 17 saves and a victory.     • Freddy Peralta inconsistent in win over White Sox
      Freddy Peralta allowed three runs on four hits in five innings in a win over the White Sox on Sunday.

      Advice: Peralta was far more good than bad, striking out seven and walking one while allowing an 88.3 mph average exit velocity. He induced 21 whiffs on 56 swings for a 38 percent whiff rate and 32 percent CSW. However, he allowed three hits and a walk in the first inning and then a home run later to Paul DeJong to put a damper on his day.
