• Back in lineup Friday
Bregman (hand) is starting at third base and batting second in Friday's series opener against the Angels, Matt Kawahara of the Houston Chronicle reports.

Advice: Bregman injured his left hand against the Cardinals on Tuesday after being hit by a pitch in the first inning. X-rays came back negative, though the Astros opted to scratch Bregman from Wednesday's lineup to give the 30-year-old additional rest. Over his last 10 games, Bregman has gone 14-for-39 with five home runs and eight RBI. Rotowire.com 54 minutes ago

  • Designated for assignment
The Blue Jays designated Biggio for assignment Friday, Mike Wilner of the Toronto Star reports.

Advice: In order to make room on the active roster for Spencer Horwitz, who was recalled from Triple-A Buffalo on Friday, the Blue Jays will push Biggio off their 40-man. The 29-year-old utility man began the year as an everyday starter, but he began losing work after slashing .200/.323/.291 with nine RBI through 130 plate appearances. Although his .614 OPS on the year represents the lowest mark of his six-year MLB career, his defensive versatility could still make him an attractive option for other organizations. • Blue Jays designate Cavan Biggio for assignment
Blue Jays designated INF-OF Cavan Biggio for assignment,

Advice: Spencer Horwitz is coming up in his place. Biggio saved himself from being non-tendered with a strong finish last season, but he could never get it going this year, batting .200/.323/.291 with two homers in 131 plate appearances. While he has versatility working in his favor, he’s not particularly good at any position, and he’s hit .219/.327/.351 since the beginning of 2021. The Jays will try to trade Biggio, but that might require taking on part of the approx. $2.4 million he’s still owed over the rest of the season. If he clears waivers because of that salary, he’ll likely remain with the organization, since he doesn’t have the service time to reject the assignment and still collect the money. • Rangers bring back INF Davis Wendzel
Rangers recalled INF Davis Wendzel from Triple-A Round Rock.

Advice: Wendzel spent most of April and May with the Rangers, going 2-for-19 with a homer and no walks. He’ll be available as a backup infielder while Corey Seager is sidelined. Rotoworld Today, 3:14 pm

  • Recalled from Triple-A
The Rangers recalled Wendzel from Triple-A Round Rock on Friday, Jeff Wilson of RangersToday.com reports.

Advice: With Corey Seager day-to-day with a hamstring injury, the Rangers will bring Wendzel up from the minors to provide some short-term infield depth. The 27-year-old was optioned to Round Rock in May after going just 2-for-29 in 17 big-league games, but he's since slashed .250/.364/.386 across 55 plate appearances in Triple-A. Derek Hill was designated for assignment in a corresponding move. Rotowire.com Today, 2:53 pm

  • Still out of lineup
Machado (hip) is not in the starting lineup for Friday's game against the Diamondbacks, AJ Cassavell of MLB.com reports.

Advice: Machado sustained a mild right hip flexor strain Wednesday against the Angels, and the 31-year-old will sit for a second straight game Friday. While he didn't start in the series opener against Arizona on Thursday, Machado did pinch hit for Kyle Higashioka in the eighth inning and grounded out to the pitcher. While Machado begins Friday's game in the dugout, Donovan Solano will start at third base and bat fifth against Diamonbacks right-hander Brandon Pfaadt. Rotowire.com Today, 2:49 pm

  • Sitting again Friday
Davis is not in the starting lineup for Friday's game against Toronto.

Advice: The righty-hitting Davis will sit for a second straight game as the Blue Jays send right-hander Chris Bassitt to the mound Friday. Over his last 15 games, Davis has slashed .250/.298/.386 with two home runs and three RBI over 44 at-bats. Tyler Soderstrom will start at first base and bat seventh for the series opener. • On bench Friday
Newman is out of the lineup for Friday's game against San Diego.

Advice: The 30-year-old will yield to Blaze Alexander on Friday despite Newman a six-game hit streak. On the year, Newman is slashing .260/.294/.377 with a 14.8 percent strikeout rate in 155 plate appearances. Rotowire.com Today, 12:31 pm
