• Yusei Kikuchi hit hard in loss to Pirates Saturday
Yusei Kikuchi was hit hard in Saturday afternoon’s loss to the Pirates, giving up six runs (five earned) on nine hits over his 5 1/3 innings of work.

Advice: The 32-year-old southpaw struck out four batters on the afternoon while issuing one base on balls. The Pirates jumped on him for three runs in the opening inning, including a two-run blast off the bat of Ke’Bryan Hayes. Kikuchi then settled in until they scratched out two more in the fifth and another while chasing him in the sixth inning. He generated 12 swings and misses on 89 pitches on the day, posting a CSW of 28 percent. He’ll look to get back on track as he carries a 3.66 ERA, 1.25 WHIP and a 65/14 K/BB ratio (66 1/3 innings) into Thursday’s matchup against the Orioles. Rotoworld Today, 2:55 pm

  • Julio Theran opts out of minors deal with Cubs
Julio Teheran has elected free agency.

Advice: The 33-year-old hurler chose to exercise the opt-out clause in his minor league contract with the Cubs and is once again back on the open market. Teheran made eight brutal starts at Triple-A Iowa where he posted a cringe-inducing 8.82 ERA, 1.81 WHIP and a 37/11 K/BB ratio over 32 2/3 innings of work. Rotoworld Today, 2:49 pm
  • Opts out of deal
Teheran opted out of his minor-league contract with the Cubs on Saturday, Jon Heyman of the New York Post reports.

Advice: After a brief stint with the Mets, Teheran elected free agency and signed a MiLB deal with the Cubs in April. He has since started eight games, logging an 8.82 ERA and 1.83 WHIP across 32.2 innings. The 33-year-old righty will once again test his luck in the open market, though another minor-league deal is likely the most he can hope for. Rotowire.com Today, 2:41 pm
  • Could start rehab stint this week
Matz (back) will throw a full-intensity bullpen Monday and could get sent on a minor-league rehab assignment if the bullpen session goes well, John Denton of MLB.com reports.

Advice: Monday's bullpen session will be Matz's third since he hit the IL with a back injury. The southpaw has missed a full month of action and would likely need a couple of rehab starts before returning to the Cardinals' active roster. In the meantime, Andre Pallante is set to fill Matz's spot in the rotation. Rotowire.com Today, 2:12 pm

  • Jeffrey Springs (elbow) throws bullpen on Saturday
Jeffrey Springs (elbow) threw a 20-pitch bullpen session on Saturday.

Advice: It’s an extremely encouraging development that Springs is already back throwing off a mound following a precautionary exit from his second rehab appearance last week in a Rookie-level Florida Complex League game due to shoulder tightness. The 31-year-old lefty continues to work his way back from last year’s Tommy John surgery and is expected to restart a rehab assignment at some point in early June. There’s a chance he’s back in the Rays’ starting rotation by July or August. Rotoworld Today, 12:55 pm

  • Brewers option Tobias Myers to Triple-A
Brewers optioned RHP Tobias Myers to Triple-A Nashville.

Advice: Myers retreats to the minors after allowing five runs over 5 1/3 frames on Friday in a no-decision against the struggling White Sox. The 25-year-old righty has intriguing stuff, but it hasn’t translated to the majors yet as he holds a lackluster 5.40 ERA, 1.46 WHIP and 27/10 K/BB ratio across 26 2/3 innings (seven appearances, six starts). He remains a work in progress and figures to be up-and-down for Milwaukee over the next few months. Rotoworld Today, 12:16 pm

  • Sent to Triple-A
The Brewers optioned Myers to Triple-A Nashville on Saturday.

Advice: Myers was knocked around during his start against the White Sox on Friday, allowing five earned runs in just 4.1 frames, and he will now head back to Nashville in order to right the ship. The 25-year-old owns a 5.40 ERA and 1.46 WHIP through 26.2 innings across seven big-league appearances this season, though he still may be relied upon later in the year if the Brewers run into additional problems with their pitching depth. Janson Junk was recalled from Triple-A in a corresponding move. Rotowire.com Today, 12:13 pm

  • Eyeing Wednesday return
Singer (illness) is feeling better but still needs a few days to recover strength, potentially slotting in to start Wednesday in Cleveland according to manager Matt Quatraro, Anne Rogers of MLB.com reports.

Advice: Singer was scratched from his last scheduled start Thursday versus the Twins due to an illness, but he now appears to be on track to return to the mound relatively soon. The right-hander is in the midst of a career year with Kansas City, producing a 2.63 ERA and 1.12 WHIP with 64 strikeouts over 61.2 innings in his first 11 starts of 2024. • Expected to start Sunday
Medina (knee) is slated to start Sunday's series finale with Atlanta, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports.

Advice: Medina has missed the entirety of the 2024 campaign to this point while recovering from a Grade 2 MCL sprain in his right knee that he suffered March 4 at spring training. The 25-year-old made two starts with Triple-A Las Vegas on a rehab assignment, surrendering seven runs on eight hits and three walks while striking out seven batters over six innings. He'll be tasked with facing one of the best lineups in Atlanta on Sunday in his first major-league start of the year. Rotowire.com Today, 11:42 am
