    • Relegated to bullpen
Manager Brandon Hyde said Wednesday that Irvin will pitch out of the bullpen going forward, Andy Kostka of TheBaltimoreBanner.com reports.

Advice: The decision to move Irvin to the bullpen comes after he allowed five runs in 3.2 innings during his most recent start Sunday against the Rangers, giving him a 10.22 ERA over 12.1 innings across his last three starts. Hyde noted there is still a possibility that the 30-year-old southpaw returns to the rotation at some point, but he would likely need to string together several solid performances out of the bullpen before that happens. • Rays recall Justin Sterner from Triple-A Durham
Rays recalled RHP Justin Sterner from Triple-A Durham.

Advice: The 27-year-old right-hander has pitched well in two appearances with the Rays this season, posting a 2.25 ERA, 1.50 WHIP and a 4/1 K/BB ratio over his four innings of work. He’ll give manager Kevin Cash another option to deploy in the middle innings. Rotoworld Yesterday, 3:42 pm
    • Shut down from throwing
Almonte will be shut down from throwing after receiving a second opinion on his right shoulder strain Wednesday, Meghan Montemurro of the Chicago Tribune reports.

Advice: Manager Craig Counsell noted Wednesday that Almonte "didn't get great news" during his second opinion, and the right-hander will decide whether to resume rehab through a strengthening program or undergo surgery for his strained right shoulder, Patrick Mooney of The Athletic reports. Before landing on the injured list in May, Almonte registered six holds and one save over 17 outings with a 3.45 ERA, 1.09 WHIP and 20:8 K:BB across 15.2 innings. He was transferred to the 60-day injured list June 27, and the 30-year-old could be on the shelf for the rest of the season if he opts for surgery. Rotowire.com Yesterday, 3:03 pm

    • Likely returning in relief
Rangers manager Bruce Bochy said Wednesday that Bradford (rib/back) has resumed throwing off a mound, and the left-hander is likely to fill a relief role once back from the injured list, Kennedi Landry of MLB.com reports.

Advice: The 26-year-old was dominant in three starts for Texas with a 1.40 ERA, 0.62 WHIP and 17:2 K:BB before he suffered a lower-back strain and a stress fracture in his rib, but he's not expected to rejoin the rotation once healthy. Max Scherzer is finally healthy after missing nearly the first three months of 2024, and Tyler Mahle (elbow) is also moving toward his season debut. Bradford's buildup and rehab assignment should be shorter since he's coming back as a reliever, but the Rangers are likely still looking for him to cover multiple innings and be an option for spot starts. • Yency Almonte gets bad news from second opinion
Yency Almonte (shoulder) did not get great news from the second opinion that he received on his injured shoulder.

Advice: The Cubs will have him shut down from throwing for a while before making a decision on whether or not he’ll undergo a surgical procedure of continue to go with the rest and rehab route. He shouldn’t be expected to return any time this season. Rotoworld Yesterday, 2:59 pm

    • Sent back to Reno
The Diamondbacks optioned Hollowell to Triple-A Reno on Wednesday.

Advice: Hollowell joined the big-league club Tuesday, but he'll now return to the minors without appearing in a game for the D-backs. Cristian Mena will take Hollowell's place on the active roster and start Wednesday's game versus the Athletics. Rotowire.com Yesterday, 2:44 pm
    • Diamondbacks option Gavin Hollowell to Triple-A
Diamondbacks optioned RHP Gavin Hollowell to Triple-A Reno.

Advice: The 26-year-old hurler spent just one day with the big-league club, but he’ll be sent back out to make room for Cristian Mena who will start on Wednesday evening against the Dodgers. Hollowell will continue to function as extra bullpen depth for the Diamondbacks at Triple-A Reno. Rotoworld Yesterday, 2:44 pm
    • Lands on injured list
The Brewers placed Paredes on the 15-day injured list Wednesday with right forearm tendinitis.

Advice: Paredes has been effective in middle relief for the Brewers this season, posting a 1.08 ERA in 16.2 innings. However, he allowed a hit and two walks in just one-third of an inning during his latest outing Tuesday and appears to have come away from the appearance with an injury. As a result, he'll now be forced to sit out at least through the All-Star break. Janson Junk will come up from Triple-A Nashville to fill the opening in Milwaukee's bullpen. • Cody Bradford (back) resumes throwing off mound
Rangers’ manager Bruce Bochy said Wednesday that Cody Bradford (back) has resumed throwing off of a mound.

Advice: Bochy also noted that when Bradford is ready to return that he’ll be utilized as a reliever instead of a starter. That’s because with the return of Max Scherzer and with Jacob deGrom and Tyler Mahle working their way back, the rotation outlook looks very muddled. From a fantasy perspective, it’s hard to envision Bradford making much of an impact upon his return if he’s not pitching out of the rotation. Rotoworld Yesterday, 2:16 pm
