    • Tosses three innings
Bivens allowed a run on four hits and a walk over three frames in a no-decision Friday. He struck out two during the win over Cleveland.

Advice: Bivens entered the game in the second inning and was tagged with a solo homer by Josh Naylor in the fourth. Over his last five outings, Bivens has given up two runs in 12 innings, dropping his season ERA to 2.65 through 17 frames. He should continue working as a bulk reliever or spot starter as necessary. • Athletics release left-hander Sean Newcomb
      Athletics released LHP Sean Newcomb.

Advice: Newcomb, 31, struggled mightily during his time with the Athletics this season, posting a miserable 6.30 ERA, 1.70 WHIP and a 7/8 K/BB ratio over 10 innings in seven appearances out of the bullpen. He’s talented enough that he should be able to find a minor league opportunity elsewhere if he wants another shot at resurrecting his career. Rotoworld Yesterday, 5:57 pm
    • Likely to work in bulk relief
Bivens is expected to serve as a bulk reliever behind opening pitcher Erik Miller in Friday's game against the Guardians, Shayna Rubin of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.

Advice: Bivens tossed five innings of one-run ball in his first MLB start in his most recent appearance this past Sunday against the Dodgers, but he'll be available out of the bullpen for what's essentially his second turn through the rotation. The right-hander will most likely shift into a more traditional bullpen role after Friday, as the Giants should get one or both of Kyle Harrison (ankle) or Blake Snell (groin) back from the injured list by next week. • Throws bullpen session
Assad (forearm) will throw a bullpen session Friday, Andy Martinez of Marquee Sports Network reports.

Advice: Assad is just a little over a week removed from landing on the 15-day injured list with a right forearm extensor strain, so it's a good sign that he's already been cleared to throw off the bump. The Cubs have a doubleheader July 13, and Assad being ready by that date could be in the cards if all goes well. Rotowire.com Yesterday, 8:20 am

    • Throws off mound
Leiter (forearm) threw a 30-pitch bullpen session Wednesday, Jared Wyllys of CHGO Sports reports.

Advice: Leiter is tracking toward a live batting practice session later this week and a return to the Cubs' bullpen next week. The reliever is eligible for activation July 9, and it sounds like he could be back by then without a rehab assignment. Rotowire.com Thursday, 11:47 am

    • Completes live BP session Wednesday
Stripling (elbow) pitched a live batting practice session before Wednesday's game against the Angels, the Associated Press reports.

Advice: Stripling's session seemed to have gone off without any issues, and he's now thrown a pair of bullpen sessions and Wednesday's batting practice in the last eight days. Manager Mark Kotsay previously indicated Stripling would likely begin a rehab assignment if he didn't experience any setbacks while facing live hitters, so the veteran right-hander could be heading to Triple-A Las Vegas to begin that phase of his recovery in the coming days. • Signs with KBO team
Balazovic signed with the Doosan Bears of the KBO this week, Jee-ho Yoo of the Yonhap News Agency reports.

Advice: Once of the Twins' more promising starting pitching prospects, Balazovic made the full-time move to the bullpen in 2023. He reached the majors briefly last season, posting a 4.44 ERA, 1.56 WHIP and 17:12 K:BB in 24.1 innings. He then struggled this year at Triple-A St. Paul with a 5.60 ERA despite a 49:15 K:BB. At age 25, it wouldn't be surprising to see him return to MLB if he has success for a season or two in South Korea. Rotowire.com Thursday, 8:02 am

    • David Bednar (oblique) resumes playing catch
David Bednar (oblique) has resumed playing catch.

Advice: Bednar is expected to progress to throwing off a bullpen mound in the coming days. He landed on the injured list back in late June with a left oblique strain and will most likely be on the shelf until after the Midsummer Classic in a few weeks. It’ll continue to be Aroldis Chapman handling the closing duties in his absence. Rotoworld Tuesday, 5:23 pm

    • Athletics designate Sean Newcomb for assignment
Athletics designated LHP Sean Newcomb for assignment.

Advice: Newcomb has been shown the door in Oakland after struggling to a 6.30 ERA, 1.70 WHIP and 7/8 K/BB ratio across 10 innings (seven appearances) this season. The 31-year-old lefty was a notable pitching prospect a few years ago with the Braves, but never quite blossomed into an upper-echelon starter at the highest level. Rotoworld Tuesday, 3:14 pm
