    • Abbott allows two runs in win Thursday
      Andrew Abbott allowed two runs in five innings and got the win in the Reds’ 11-4 victory over the Cardinals on Thursday.



      Advice: Abbott gave up two hits, walked six and struck out two. Abbott wasn’t sharp as the six walks were a season-high, but the Reds scored 10 runs while he was in the game and he was able to grind out five innings to earn his seventh win of the season. Abbott has won four of his last five starts and has a 3.41 ERA on the year. The 25-year-old left-hander is set to face the Yankees on the road next week.

    • Wacha strikes out six in no-decision Thursday
      Michael Wacha allowed one run in 5 1/3 innings and got a no-decision in the Royals’ 2-1 victory over the Guardians on Thursday.

      Advice: Wacha gave up seven hits, walked two and struck out six. It was another decent outing for Wacha in his second start since returning from the injured list. Once again the Royals didn’t provide him with any run support while he was in the game. His ERA is 3.91 on the year. The 32-year-old right-hander is set to face the Rays at home next week.

    • Snags seventh win
      Neris (7-2) tossed a scoreless ninth inning with two strikeouts to earn the win in Thursday's 5-3, 10-inning victory over the Giants.

      Advice: Neris went through a rough patch earlier this month but he's pitched better lately, tossing scoreless innings in consecutive outings with four total strikeouts. The veteran once again didn't see a save opportunity, as that went to Porter Hodge on Thursday, but it was encouraging to see Neris still work in a high-leverage spot.     • Lars Nootbaar starting rehab assignment on Friday
      Lars Nootbaar (oblique) will begin a minor league rehab assignment on Friday with Double-A Springfield.

      Advice: Nootbaar told reporters Thursday that he expects to play at least five or six rehab contests before returning to the majors. The 26-year-old corner outfielder has been on the shelf since late May recovering from a moderate oblique strain.     • Max Scherzer to start on Friday against Orioles
      Max Scherzer (thumb) will start on Friday against the Orioles.

      Advice: Scherzer came out of his season debut on Sunday with some relatively minor right thumb soreness, but it sounds like he’s ready to roll for his next outing on Friday evening at Camden Yards.       Nootbaar (oblique) will begin a rehab assignment with Double-A Springfield on Friday, Jeff Jones of the Belleville News-Democrat reports.

      Advice: Nootbaar said he expects his rehab assignment to last roughly six games, which would put him in line to return to the active roster July 5 for the beginning of St. Louis' series with the Nationals.     • IL stay to be minimal
      Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo said Wednesday the club is looking for Moreno (thumb) to return after a minimum stay on the 10-day injured list, Alex Weiner of Arizona Sports reports. He's eligible to return next Tuesday.

      Advice: Moreno, who has been hitting off a tee and playing catch, will begin ramping up Thursday. That's when he'll catch a bullpen session thrown by injured ace Zac Gallen (hamstring). After that, the catcher is scheduled for a game in the Arizona Complex League over the weekend, setting up a potential return Tuesday, when the club kicks off a three-game set on the road against the Dodgers.       Helsley allowed a hit and a walk while striking out one in a scoreless inning to earn the save in a 4-1 win over Atlanta in Game 2 of Wednesday's doubleheader.

      Advice: Helsley allowed two runs in Monday's game versus Atlanta, but he was able to keep his save streak going. The right-hander has converted his last 28 save attempts after blowing his first chance of the year. He's now at a 2.75 ERA, 1.25 WHIP and 43:16 K:BB through 36 innings. Helsley has allowed six hits and issued 10 walks over 11 innings in June, but he's been scored on in just two of his 11 appearances this month, so his place as the Cardinals' closer is not in doubt.       Ryan Helsley tossed a scoreless ninth inning with one strikeout to earn the save in the second game of a doubleheader against the Braves on Wednesday.

      Advice: Helsley was summoned to close it out in the ninth with a three-run lead against the Braves. He recorded the first out, then allowed two runners on with a single and a walk.
