    • Jeimer Candelario (knee) held out again on Friday
Jeimer Candelario (knee) was held out of the Reds’ starting lineup once again for Friday night’s tilt against the Cardinals.

Advice: It’s the third straight game that the 30-year-old slugger has missed due to the knee issue. There haven’t been any indications yet that the injury will require a trip to the injured list, but if it lingers through the weekend the Reds may be forced to make a move. Noelvi Marte will start at the hot corner on Friday night while Spencer Steer mans first base for the Reds. Rotoworld Yesterday, 1:09 pm

    • Masyn Winn absent from Cardinals lineup on Friday
Masyn Winn is absent from the Cardinals’ starting lineup for Friday’s battle against the Reds.

Advice: It looks to be nothing more than a routine night off for the 22-year-old rookie shortstop. Brandon Crawford will draw a rare start in his place and will bat eighth for the Cardinals against Reds’ right-hander Frankie Montas on Friday evening in St. Louis. Rotoworld Yesterday, 1:00 pm

    • Getting day off
Winn is out of the lineup for Friday's game against the Reds, Jeff Jones of the Belleville News-Democrat reports.

Advice: Winn will step out of the starting nine for the first time since June 18, giving way to Brandon Crawford at shortstop Friday. Since the start of June, Winn is batting 25-for-97 (.258) with two homers and 16 runs. Rotowire.com Yesterday, 12:55 pm

    • Out against lefty
Rortvedt is out of the lineup for Friday's game against Washington, Ryan Bass of Bally Sports Sun reports.

Advice: The lefty-hitting Rortvedt will retreat to the bench as the Rays take on southpaw Mitchell Parker. Alex Jackson will take over catching duties and bat ninth. Rotowire.com Yesterday, 12:05 pm

    • Allows three homers in loss
Flaherty (5-5) took the loss against the Angels on Thursday, allowing five runs on seven hits and one walk over 5.2 innings. He struck out seven.

Advice: Flaherty got tagged for a solo homer to lead off the bottom of the second before proceeding to strike out six of the next nine batters he faced. However, the right-hander would go on to surrender two more long balls on the night as the Tigers failed to back him with anything on offense. Flaherty had allowed one run or fewer in four consecutive starts coming in, and no runs in three of his previous four. The three home runs he gave up Thursday also marked a season high. • Dominant in tough-luck defeat
Sale (10-3) suffered the loss Thursday, allowing one run on four hits and a walk over seven innings against the White Sox. He struck out 11.

Advice: Sale dominated his former team, with a first-inning homer by Luis Robert marking the only blemish to his stellar outing. However, the bats failed to provide any support for Sale, and Atlanta suffered its third shutout loss of the season with each occurring within the month of June. Following an inexplicable blip June 1 when he allowed eight runs to the hapless Athletics, Sale has rebounded over the last four games by allowing a total of six earned runs over 26 innings, giving him an ERA of 2.08 with a 0.85 WHIP and 36 strikeouts during that stretch. His next start is tentatively scheduled to take place in the middle of next week, when Atlanta plays host to the Giants. Rotowire.com Yesterday, 12:06 am

    • Jack Flaherty tagged for three homers in loss
Jack Flaherty lost to the Angels after allowing five runs in 5 2/3 innings on Thursday.

Advice: Flaherty surrendered three homers, matching his total from his previous six starts combined. He struck out seven and walked just one, but there was no overcoming the longball in this one. It’s the first time since Apr. 24 that he’s allowed more than three runs. • Westburg hits two-run double in route over Rangers
Jordan Westburg went 1-for-4 with a two-run double against the Rangers on Thursday.

Advice: Westburg was thrown out at third trying to stretch a double into a triple, but still drove in two runs to give the Orioles a 3-0 lead in the first inning. The 25-year-old infielder is hitting .286 with an .854 OPS and 48 RBI on the season.

    • Sale strikes out 11 in hard-luck loss to former team
Chris Sale struck out 11 over seven innings of one-run baseball, but picked up a loss Thursday as the White Sox beat Atlanta 1-0 in the first game of a doubleheader.

Advice: Sale was facing his former team in the White Sox, and while he gets credited for the loss, it was a dominant effort for the 35-year-old. The only blemish came when he gave up a solo homer to Luis Robert Jr. in the first, and he allowed just three more hits while missing plenty of bats. It’s the third time Sale has picked up double-digit strikeouts — the 11 are a season high — and he’s now the owner of a 2.79 ERA and 118/17 K/BB over 15 starts. He gets the Giants next.
