    • Kyle Kendrick deserved a win but was dealt a no-decision Wednesday, as he held the Nationals to one run on just two hits and a walk over 7 2/3 innings.
Advice: Kendrick struck out six and gave up only an Adam LaRoche single in the second and Jayson Werth RBI single in the seventh, but Jonathan Papelbon was unable to nail down the one-run victory. The outing comes after Kendrick's worst of the season, though that was at Coors Field and, thus, forgivable. He'll get the Padres in San Diego next.

    • Kyle Kendrick was knocked around for a season-high seven runs in 4 1/3 innings Friday in a no-decision against the Rockies.
Advice: Kendrick gave up 10 hits (including two home runs) and failed to register a strikeout. He had given up seven runs combined over his previous three outings, but a clunker at Coors Field shouldn't be considered shocking. He'll have a good chance to bounce back next week when he faces the Nationals at home.

    • Josh Collmenter allowed just one hit over six scoreless innings and struck out seven in relief of an injured Trevor Cahill against the Marlins on Wednesday.
Advice: Collmenter missed out on a start Tuesday, as the Diamondbacks picked Randall Delgado instead. He got what essentially was a start today anyway and was outstanding, though he didn't get a win out of it. He's 3-0 with a 2.43 ERA in 40 2/3 innings out of the pen this season.

    • Luis Mendoza yielded four runs on four hits and three walks over just five innings in Wednesday's loss to the Indians.
Advice: Things turned sour in a hurry for Mendoza, who held the Tribe hitless through the first four frames. Michael Brantley took him deep to lead off the fifth, and Mendoza allowed the first five batters to reach in the sixth before getting yanked. Mendoza has mostly pitched well of late but still sports a 4.30 ERA and 1.45 WHIP for the season. He'll get the Braves at home next.

    • Yoervis Medina pitched a perfect bottom of the 10th in a 3-2 game to earn the save as the Mariners edged the Angels on Tuesday.
Advice: Medina might have been in line for the save in the ninth anyway, given that Oliver Perez was used to pitch a scoreless seventh with the Mariners up 2-1. Tom Wilhelmsen let that lead get away in the eighth, but the Mariners reclaimed it in the 10th after Erick Aybar couldn't quite get a handle on Kendrys Morales' sharp liner over his head. Medina went on to retire Albert Pujols, Mark Trumbo and Howie Kendrick in order for the save. He's now a candidate for more saves, though he has the same sort of control troubles as Wilhelmsen. Even after tonight, he's walked 11 in his last 13 1/3 innings of work.

    • Sean Marshall (shoulder) hopes to begin long-tossing in the next day or so.
Advice: Marshall's shoulder is feeling good so far, but the left-hander thinks he's probably still at least three weeks away from a return. He's been out since mid-May with a shoulder issue that initially cropped up in spring training.

    • Santiago Casilla (knee) will throw a bullpen session Thursday.
Advice: It will be his first since he had a cyst removed from his right knee last month. While Casilla was originally expected to be out until the second half of the season, it appears he could rejoin the Giants' bullpen prior to the All-Star break.

    • Heath Bell gave up a homer in a fourth straight appearance Wednesday, yet he still picked up his 13th save against the Marlins.
Advice: The homer by Justin Ruggiano only brought the Marlins to within 3-1. Bell, however, did allow a hit and a walk afterwards as part of a 31-pitch ninth inning. Fortunately for him, the Diamondbacks now have Thursday off, giving him a chance to recover. Bell, though, is leaving the door wide open for J.J. Putz to reclaim closing duties should Putz's rehab progress as hoped.

    • Heath Bell was charged with the loss after allowing a ninth inning solo homer to Giancarlo Stanton in a tie game Monday.
Advice: Entering a 2-2 contest in the top of the ninth, Bell struck out Ed Lucas before Stanton homered to right. Bell (4.23 ERA, 1.52 WHIP) has allowed a home run in three consecutive appearances. Consider it a course-correction after he enjoyed some good luck earlier this season. With J.J. Putz (elbow) close to returning, the clock on Bell's reign as closer may be ticking.

    • Jonathan Broxton (elbow) is expected to resume throwing at some point this weekend.
Advice: Broxton has been idle since being placed on the disabled list June 14 with a right elbow flexor strain. "He's been working on strengthening it," trainer Paul Lessard said Wednesday. "He finally has his full range of motion back. We wanted to get it flushed out." There is no timetable for the right-hander's return.

    • Reds placed RHP Jonathan Broxton on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to June 14, with a right elbow flexor strain.
Advice: Broxton has a 4.33 ERA, 1.30 WHIP and 20/11 K/BB ratio through his first 27 innings this season, so it provides some context for his struggles. The Reds expect Broxton to return on June 29 when first eligible.

    • Orioles manager Buck Showalter said Wednesday that Jake Arrieta will join the starting rotation with Triple-A Norfolk.
Advice: Arrieta was optioned to the minors after he gave up five runs on 10 hits and a walk over 4 2/3 innings Monday in a spot-start against the Tigers. The 27-year-old right-hander has a 7.23 ERA in five starts in the majors this season and a 5.50 ERA in six starts and one relief appearance in Triple-A, but the Orioles aren't considering changing his role yet.

    • Francisco Rodriguez earned his fifth save of the season, number 299 of his career, against the Astros on Wednesday.
Advice: K-Rod is now just one away from 300, a number only 24 others have reached in baseball's history. Jim Henderson will be reinstalled as the Brewers' closer once K-Rod gets to the plateau, but even then Rodriguez should continue to be a valuable pitcher in leagues that count holds. He has a 0.68 ERA and 0.75 WHIP through 13 1/3 innings and will likely become the team's setup man once Henderson is back closing.

    • Tyson Ross struck out all five Giants he faced out of the pen on Wednesday.
Advice: He needed just 21 pitches to do it, too. The Padres said last month that Ross was going to get another shot in the rotation, but nothing of late suggests that they're intending to make that happen anytime soon. He has a 2.05 ERA in 22 innings since coming off the DL and joining the pen.

    • Tom Wilhelmsen gave up a game-tying homer to the first batter he faced after being brought into a one-run game in the eighth Tuesday against the Angels.
Advice: So, Wilhelmsen can't close at the moment, but he can be brought in to face Albert Pujols with the game on the line? Pujols took him deep on just his second pitch of the night. It was actually the first homer allowed by Wilhelmsen this season. After that, he came back and got five outs, though he did need Charlie Furbush to bail him out of a jam in a tie game in the ninth. Overall, it probably wasn't a showing that's going to help his chances of returning to the closer's role.
