    • Demoted to sixth in batting order
Volpe will start at shortstop and bat sixth in Thursday's game against the Reds.

Advice: It's the first time since April 9 that Volpe has hit anywhere other than leadoff. After a productive first two months of the season, Volpe has slashed just .211/.228/.301 with a 33:3 K:BB over 136 plate appearances since June 1. Ben Rice will get a shot in the leadoff spot Thursday. Rotowire.com 4 minutes ago

    • Exits starting nine
Wong is not in the lineup for Thursday's game in Miami.

Advice: Wong extended his hit streak to 17 games in Wednesday's win over the Marlins, but he'll take a seat for Thursday's matinee. Reese McGuire will be behind the plate for Nick Pivetta. Rotowire.com 20 minutes ago

    • Sitting versus southpaw
Winker is out of the lineup for Thursday's game against the Mets, Andrew Golden of The Washington Post reports.

Advice: Lefty Jose Quintana is taking the mound Thursday for New York, so Winker will hit the bench for the third time in four games. Harold Ramirez will receive another start at designated hitter as the pair continue to platoon the position. Rotowire.com Today, 6:15 am

    • Hit streak at 17 games
Wong went 2-for-5 with a stolen base in Wednesday's 7-2 win over the Marlins.

Advice: The backstop continued his breakout campaign, hitting safely in his 17th straight game while swiping his fourth bag of the year. Wong is slashing .333/.405/.470 during his hit streak, the longest by a Boston catcher since Victor Martinez put together a 25-game streak in 2009. The only other catcher in Red Sox history with a hitting streak of 17 games or longer is Hall of Famer Carlton Fisk, who reached that number twice between the 1975 and 1976 seasons. • Swats first homer since return
Contreras went 1-for-3 with two walks and a two-run home run in Wednesday's 5-4 extra-inning loss to the Pirates.

Advice: The 32-year-old catcher tied the game at 3-3 in the eighth inning by taking Colin Holderman deep. It was Contreras' seventh homer of the year but his first in nine games since returning from a fractured forearm, a stretch in which he's batting just .200 (6-for-30). He does have extra-base hits in back-to-back contests after ripping a double Tuesday however, so he's showing signs of regaining his form at the plate. On the season, Contreras is slashing .263/.395/.504 through 40 games. Rotowire.com Today, 5:56 am
    • Begins swinging bat
Carter (back) flew to Arizona last week and has begun swinging a bat, Kennedi Landry of MLB.com reports.

Advice: This marks the first time Carter has swung a bat since landing on the injured list in early June. Texas manager Bruce Bochy said the plan calls for Carter to face live pitching in the next few days. The injury was first described as lower-back tightness but was then reclassified as a stress reaction, which prompted the lengthy rehab. Rotowire.com Today, 5:17 am

    • Anthony Volpe snaps out of cold spell with two RBI
Anthony Volpe smacked a two-run double on Wednesday in the Yankees’ loss to the Reds.

Advice: Volpe got New York on the scoreboard in the seventh inning with a two-run double off Cincinnati starter Andrew Abbott. It wasn’t all positive for the young shortstop as he grounded into a key double play in the ninth inning to squash any hope of a Yankees rally against Reds stopper Alexis Díaz. The 23-year-old shortstop has been struggling the last few weeks, batting .212 (29-for-137) with zero homers and only four steals over his last 30 games. Rotoworld Yesterday, 7:08 pm

    • Willson Contreras swats two-run homer in defeat
Willson Contreras hit a two-run homer on Wednesday in the Cardinals’ extra-inning loss at the hands of the Pirates.

Advice: Contreras walloped a game-tying shot off Pirates reliever Colin Holderman, who has been outstanding this season in a setup role for Pittsburgh, in the eighth inning to help send this one to extra innings. It was his lone hit in three at-bats, but he also drew a pair of walks in this one. It was the first big fly for the 32-year-old veteran backstop since returning from the injured list back on June 24. Rotoworld Yesterday, 6:50 pm
    • Masataka Yoshida plates two in win over Marlins
Masataka Yoshida went 2-for-4 with a pair of RBI on Wednesday, powering the sizzling-hot Red Sox to a 7-2 blowout win over the Marlins.

Advice: Yoshida followed up a two-hit performance during Tuesday’s series opener at loanDepot park with a go-ahead run-scoring single in the third inning before tacking on a pivotal insurance run with a seventh-inning ground out. He also walked and scored a run in the ninth inning. The 30-year-old designated hitter, who missed a significant portion of the first half due to a thumb injury, has been scorching-hot at the dish recently, batting .440 (11-for-25) with four RBI over his last seven games.
