• Dazzles in Opening Day win
Skubal (1-0) tossed six scoreless innings to earn the win Thursday against the White Sox. He allowed three hits and struck out six.

Advice: Skubal left after tossing 83 pitches, and if it wasn't his first start of the season, he may have been allowed to go longer as he was dominant while in the contest. The southpaw compiled a 2.80 ERA and 0.90 WHIP across 15 outings last year, which got off to a delayed start due to left flexor tendon surgery in August of 2022. If Skubal can stay healthy and log a full workload in 2024, he could be in line for a true breakout campaign as Detroit's ace. Rotowire.com 2 minutes ago

  • Oneil Cruz homers, Bucs outlast Fish in marathon
Oneil Cruz clobbered a solo homer on Thursday, leading the Pirates to a 6-5 extra-inning Opening Day victory over the Marlins.

Advice: Pittsburgh emerged victorious in a 12-inning Opening Day marathon that took nearly four hours to complete. Cruz’s torrid spring training performance carried over into this one as he launched a game-tying eighth-inning solo shot to left-center field off Marlins reliever Sixto Sánchez. The 25-year-old shortstop batted sixth in this one, which is pretty surprising, and seems unlikely to continue for very long. Rotoworld 9 minutes ago

  • Unavailable on Opening Day
Bednar was unavailable to pitch Thursday against the Marlins due to ongoing rehab from a lat injury, Jason Mackey of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.

Advice: Bednar was sidelined for much of spring training with a lat issue, though he managed to make his Grapefruit League debut March 21 while making an additional appearance on March 24. He hasn't been placed on the injured list, so presumably, Pittsburgh expects him to be ready to retake the mound quickly. Rotowire.com 10 minutes ago

  • Jake Burger has three hits, plates three in loss
Jake Burger went 3-for-4 with three RBI on Thursday in the Marlins’ Opening Day loss to the Pirates.

Advice: Burger extended Miami’s early lead with a two-run single in the third inning before adding a sacrifice fly a couple frames later. The 27-year-old corner infielder has settled in nicely as a run-producing, middle-of-the-order mainstay for the Marlins. Rotoworld 10 minutes ago

  • Jose Hernandez records extra-inning save Thursday
Jose Hernandez tossed a perfect 12th inning on Thursday against the Marlins to record his first save of the season.

Advice: Hernandez got the call to guard a one-run lead in the 12th inning of Thursday’s Opening Day marathon against the Marlins just a few hours after getting the call back to the majors with Roansy Contreras on paternity leave. He’s unlikely to net any additional save chances moving forward. Rotoworld 11 minutes ago
  • Mitch Keller struggles in no-decision vs. Marlins
Mitch Keller was charged with five runs (four earned) over 5 2/3 innings on Thursday in a no-decision against the Marlins.

Advice: Keller was touched up for seven hits, but managed to keep the ball in the yard, which was enough to give the Pirates’ bullpen a shot in an eventual extra-inning marathon win. He finished with just three strikeouts and also issued a pair of walks. He’ll face off against the Nationals on Tuesday in a road matchup. Rotoworld 12 minutes ago

  • Jesús Luzardo strikes out eight in Opening Day gem
Jesús Luzardo recorded eight strikeouts and allowed two runs over five innings on Thursday in a no-decision against the Pirates.

Advice: Luzardo generated 18 swinging strikes, including 10 on his slider alone, and limited Pittsburgh’s potent offense to just a two-run homer from Bryan Reynolds over five frames. The 26-year-old southpaw is in line for a tasty matchup on Tuesday against the Angels. Rotoworld 12 minutes ago

  • Stumbles early
Cortes didn't factor into the decision Thursday, allowing four runs on five hits and two walks over five innings in a 5-4 win over Houston. He struck out five.

Advice: The Astros got to Cortes early Thursday, scoring three runs in the opening inning before Jake Meyers led off the second with a solo homer. While it looked like the game could get out of hand, Cortes recovered to set down 12 of the final 13 batters he faced, ultimately winding up with a no-decision as the Yankees scored five unanswered runs in a comeback win. New York is hoping for a bounce-back campaign from Cortes after he made just 12 starts last year, going 5-2 with a 4.97 ERA. The left-hander is tentatively lined up for a road matchup with the Diamondbacks in his next outing. Rotowire.com 21 minutes ago

  • Trevor Stephan out 12-16 months after elbow surgery
Trevor Stephan will be out 12-16 months after undergoing Tommy John surgery.

Advice: Stephan was placed on the 60-day injured prior to Thursday’s Opening Day contest and will miss the entire 2024 season. Rotoworld 25 minutes ago
