      Justin Steele went the distance for his first win of 2024, pitching a two-hitting in a 5-1 game against the Angels.

      Advice: The Cubs didn’t need to turn to their shaky pen this time out, as Steele finished off the Angels in just 95 pitches. He struck out seven and walked two for his first win in 13 starts this season and 18 outings dating back to last year, when he opened up 16-3 before going 0-2 in his final four turns and perhaps costing himself a Cy Young Award.     • Griffin Canning takes ninth loss versus Cubs
      Griffin Canning yielded four runs and six hits over 4 1/3 innings Friday in a loss to the Cubs.

      Advice: Just five of the 15 balls in play against Canning were hit hard, but those five did produce four hits, including a homer. While Canning definitely looks better now than he did in April, he’s still been more adequate than good.     • Ian Happ drives in two runs in Cubs’ victory
      Ian Happ had two more hits and two more RBI against the Angels in Friday’s win.

      Advice: Just like last night, it was again Happ and Seiya Suzuki, who hit a two-run homer, doing the heavy lifting for the Cubs offense. They both have .806 OPSs at the moment and, given the state of the NL outfield poor, legitimate cases for All-Star nods.     • Struggles again in loss
      Canning (3-9) took the loss against the Cubs on Friday, allowing four runs on six hits and two walks with four strikeouts over 4.1 innings.

      Advice: Canning surrendered a two-run homer in the first inning and allowed two more runs before being pulled with two outs to go in the fifth. This was the first time the righty failed to complete five frames in a start since April 13, and he has now yielded four earned runs four times in his past five outings. On the season, the 28-year-old owns a 4.87 ERA, 1.36 WHIP and 67:34 K:BB over 98 innings and lines up for a home matchup with the Rangers next week. Rotowire.com Today, 1:50 pm

      Steele (1-3) earned the win against the Angels on Friday, allowing one run on two hits and two walks with seven strikeouts over nine innings.

      Advice: Steele needed just 95 pitches to toss his first career complete game. The only blemish was an RBI single by Taylor Ward in the fifth, but the lefty responded by retiring 13 consecutive batters to seal his much overdue first win of the year. The 29-year-old has logged six straight quality starts and owns a 2.95 ERA, 1.00 WHIP and 77:18 K:BB over 79.1 innings this season. He lines up for a road matchup with the Orioles next week.       O'Neill went 3-for-5 with a double, a walk, a run, two RBI and two stolen bases in a 6-5 extra-innings win against Miami on Thursday.

      Advice: O'Neill accounted for three of Boston's eight total hits to record his third consecutive multi-hit effort. He came up big in extra frames, recording an RBI single in the 11th inning and adding the game-winning RBI on a double in the 12th. O'Neill also collected two thefts in the contest after notching just one steal (on one attempt) over his first 60 games of the season. Swiping bags probably won't become a trend for the outfielder moving forward, though it's worth noting that he stole 29 combined bases across the 2021 and 2022 campaigns while with St. Louis.     • Let down by 'pen in dominant outing
      Pivetta struck out 10 batters while allowing one hit and two walks over seven scoreless innings in a no-decision against Miami on Thursday.

      Advice: Pivetta was downright dominant Thursday, racking up 15 swinging strikes en route to his second double-digit punchout performance of the campaign. He held the Marlins hitless until Jesus Sanchez tripled against him in the seventh inning, and the right-hander departed in line for a victory with a 2-0 lead. However, Boston's bullpen eliminated Pivetta's chance for the win by giving up two runs in the bottom of the eighth.
