• Lands MiLB deal with Phils
Ruiz agreed to a minor-league contract with the Phillies on Monday.

Advice: The deal includes an invitation to big-league spring training, though Ruiz should be viewed as a long shot to secure a spot in the Phillies' Opening Day bullpen. Over 38 big-league appearances with the White Sox and Diamondbacks in 2023 spanning 44.1 innings, Ruiz posted a 5.89 ERA, 1.65 WHIP and 39:21 K:BB while serving up 10 home runs. • Brought back by Giants
The Giants re-signed Waites (elbow) to a minor-league contract Sunday.

Advice: Waites was non-tendered by San Francisco earlier this month but is now back in the organization. The 25-year-old had Tommy John surgery in September and will be sidelined until at least spring training in 2025. He'll now get to conduct his rehab in familiar surroundings. • Re-signs with Tigers
The Tigers re-signed Hill to a minor-league contract Sunday.

Advice: Hill was non-tendered by Detroit earlier this month but will remain in the organization. It's not clear whether he was given an invitation to the major-league side of spring training as part of the deal. Hill was torched for 20 runs (16 earned) over 15.2 major-league innings in 2023. • Gets MiLB deal from Arizona
Castillo agreed to a minor-league contract with the Diamondbacks on Monday.

Advice: Castillo has been given an invitation to the major-league side of spring training. The 27-year-old left-hander spent nearly all of 2023 at the Triple-A level, posting a 7.65 ERA and 48:24 K:BB over 37.2 frames. He boasts a 55:16 K:BB over 40.1 career innings in the majors. • Diamondbacks sign ex-Padre reliever Castillo
Diamondbacks signed LHP José Castillo to a minor league contract and invited him to spring training.

Advice: Once one of the game’s more promising relief prospects with the Padres, Castillo’s career has stalled due to injury. He wound up with a 7.65 ERA in 37 2/3 innings in Triple-A last year, and he also gave up four runs in one-third of an inning in his only appearance for the Padres. He’ll be a long shot to secure a spot in Arizona’s pen. Rotoworld Yesterday, 5:46 am

  • Phillies sign José Ruiz to minor league pact
Phillies signed RHP José Ruiz to a minor league contract and invited him to spring training.

Advice: Ruiz, somehow a seven-year MLB veteran, had a 4.43 ERA and a 36/17 K/BB ratio in 40 2/3 innings for the Diamondbacks last season. He turned in his best season in 2021 with the White Sox, finishing with a 3.05 ERA in 65 innings. Unless injuries strike, it’s unlikely that he’ll make the Phillies out of spring training. However, he’ll likely log bullpen time at some point. Rotoworld Yesterday, 5:40 am

  • Signs with Halos
Kolarek signed a one-year, $900,000 contract with the Angels on Sunday.

Advice: Kolarek has had limited time in the majors over the past four seasons, and he made just five relief appearances between the Dodgers and Mets last year. He tossed six scoreless innings across those outings and was relatively effective in the minors, posting a 3.80 ERA and 1.55 WHIP in 42.2 innings across 46 relief appearances with Triple-A clubs. Kolarek will join the Angels on a major-league deal ahead of the 2023 campaign but could lose his spot in the big-league bullpen if he struggles at some point. Rotowire.com Sunday, 8:11 pm

  • Angels sign Adam Kolarek to one-year contract
Angels signed LHP Adam Kolarek to a one-year, $900,000 contract.

Advice: The 34-year-old southpaw made five appearances in the big leagues between the Dodgers and Mets in 2023 — hurling six scoreless innings with a 0.50 WHIP and a 7/1 K/BB ratio. He hasn’t thrown 20 innings in any big league season since 2019, so it’s a bit surprising to see that the Angels are basically handing him a spot in their Opening Day bullpen by inking him to a major league contract. Expect him to function in middle relief for the Halos. Rotoworld Sunday, 8:08 pm

  • Signs with Cincinnati
Sanmartin (elbow) signed a minor-league contract with the Reds on Nov. 19.

Advice: Sanmartin underwent Tommy John surgery in early July before being non-tendered by the Reds in mid-November. While it's unclear whether his new minor-league contract is a one-year or two-year deal, he'll at least be able to begin his recovery process as part of the organization. Rotowire.com Sunday, 7:11 pm
