    Advice: Once one of the game’s more promising relief prospects with the Padres, Castillo’s career has stalled due to injury. He wound up with a 7.65 ERA in 37 2/3 innings in Triple-A last year, and he also gave up four runs in one-third of an inning in his only appearance for the Padres.     Phillies signed RHP José Ruiz to a minor league contract and invited him to spring training.

    Advice: Ruiz, somehow a seven-year MLB veteran, had a 4.43 ERA and a 36/17 K/BB ratio in 40 2/3 innings for the Diamondbacks last season. He turned in his best season in 2021 with the White Sox, finishing with a 3.05 ERA in 65 innings. Unless injuries strike, it’s unlikely that he’ll make the Phillies out of spring training.     Kolarek signed a one-year, $900,000 contract with the Angels on Sunday.

    Advice: Kolarek has had limited time in the majors over the past four seasons, and he made just five relief appearances between the Dodgers and Mets last year. He tossed six scoreless innings across those outings and was relatively effective in the minors, posting a 3.80 ERA and 1.55 WHIP in 42.2 innings across 46 relief appearances with Triple-A clubs.     Advice: The 34-year-old southpaw made five appearances in the big leagues between the Dodgers and Mets in 2023 — hurling six scoreless innings with a 0.50 WHIP and a 7/1 K/BB ratio. He hasn’t thrown 20 innings in any big league season since 2019, so it’s a bit surprising to see that the Angels are basically handing him a spot in their Opening Day bullpen by inking him to a major league contract.
