      Nestor Cortes struggled in Saturday’s loss to the Rays, giving up four runs on five hits over his 5 1/3 innings of work.

      Advice: Cortes punched out five batters on the afternoon, but also issued three free passes. The 29-year-old southpaw struggled to keep the baseball in the yard, giving up a leadoff homer to Yandy Diaz to start the home half of the first and then a three-run bomb to Randy Arozarena in the third — accounting for all of the damage done against him. Cortes generated 11 swings and misses on 89 pitches on the afternoon, posting a CSW of 31 percent.       Stroman (2-2) took the loss against Houston on Thursday, allowing four runs on nine hits and two walks while striking out five batters over 5.2 innings.

      Advice: Stroman got off to a poor beginning Thursday, giving up three first-inning runs on homers by Yordan Alvarez and Jon Singleton. He rebounded to keep Houston off the scoreboard over the following three frames before being tagged for another run in the fifth. Stroman at least allowed New York to keep within striking range, but this was his second time giving up four runs over his past three starts.       Marcus Stroman was tagged for four runs over 5 2/3 innings on Thursday in a loss to the Astros.

      Advice: Stroman coughed up a pair of first-inning homers and also served up a run-scoring single to Jeremy Peña in the fifth inning, which was enough to saddle him with a loss in a low-scoring affair at Yankee Stadium. He struck out five and also issued a pair of walks.       Astros manager Joe Espada said Thursday that Brown could be available out of the bullpen for the next few days, Matt Kawahara of the Houston Chronicle reports.

      Advice: Brown last pitched Sunday and had been on turn for a start Saturday in Detroit, but Cristian Javier (neck) is returning that day and Justin Verlander will move ahead of Brown to pitch Sunday on regular rest. Brown seemingly would be set up to make a start Monday versus the Athletics if he doesn't pitch in relief before then, but it doesn't appear that has been decided yet.       Rodon (3-2) earned the win over Houston on Wednesday, allowing two runs on seven hits and no walks while striking out seven batters over 6.1 innings.

      Advice: Rodon gave up six earned runs over four frames versus the Orioles in his worst start of the campaign his last time out, but he bounced back with a strong showing Wednesday. The left-hander racked up 16 swinging strikes against the Astros, leading to his second-highest single-game strikeout total of the season. While Rodon's season ERA sits at a mediocre 3.56, that's largely due to the blowup outing against Baltimore.       Cease (5-2) picked up the win Wednesday against the Cubs, allowing one hit and two walks over seven scoreless innings. He struck out 12.

      Advice: Cease fell one K shy of his career high in strikeouts and allowed only four total baserunners -- an infield single, two walks and a hit-by-pitch -- en route to his fifth win of his last six starts. He's been making a case for the NL Cy Young in his first season with the Padres, earning a 2.19 ERA and a 0.75 WHIP with 60 strikeouts over 49.1 innings pitched.       Carlos Rodón allowed two runs with seven strikeouts across 6 1/3 innings in a win over the Astros on Wednesday.

      Advice: Rodón served up a solo homer to Kyle Tucker in the first inning. He settled in nicely, tossing five more scoreless frames. Rodón went back out for the seventh gave up a run on two hits before his day was done with one out in the frame. He struck out seven on an impressive 16 whiffs. It was a nice bounceback effort for the 31-year-old left-hander. He’ll take a 3.56 ERA, 1.26 WHIP, and a 43/14 K/BB ratio across 43 innings into a start against the Twins in Minnesota on Tuesday.       Dylan Cease recorded a season-high 12 strikeouts over seven shutout innings on Wednesday in a win over the Cubs.

      Advice: Cease was simply magnificent during Wednesday afternoon’s matinee at Wrigley Field, inducing a surreal 24 swinging strikes, including 12 on his slider alone, and finished with an elite 39 percent CSW. He limited Chicago’s formidable offense to just three baserunners, one hit and a pair of walks, over seven nearly-flawless frames. His 12 strikeouts were just one shy of his previous career-high mark set back on June 26, 2022. The 28-year-old fantasy ace has been outstanding in his San Diego debut, allowing two earned runs or fewer in seven of his eight starts.
