    • Nabs win in 10th
      Bednar (3-3) picked up the win Tuesday, striking out one in a perfect 10th inning during a 7-6 victory over the Giants.

      Advice: After the Pirates rallied for four runs in the ninth, Bednar got the call for the top of the 10th and set down three straight pinch hitters in Mike Yastrzemski, LaMonte Wade and Patrick Bailey. The right-hander then got rewarded when Nick Gonzales walked it off by singling on the first pitch he saw in the bottom of the frame. Bednar has turned things around following a bumpy first month of the season, and over 10 appearances in May he's posted a 2.89 ERA, 1.07 WHIP and 7:3 K:BB through 9.1 innings while converting all five of his save chances and chipping in two wins.       Estevez (0-3) took the loss against the Astros on Tuesday after allowing an unearned run on a hit and a walk while managing to record one out.

      Advice: Estevez had no room for error after the Angels failed to score in the top of the 10th and was stuck with facing the heart of the Astros lineup. Yordan Alvarez was intentionally walked to start the inning, and then Alex Bregman was retired before giving up the game-winning hit to Jeremy Pena. Estevez has now pitched on back-to-back days and in three of the last four and likely will have the day off Wednesday. He now owns a 5.06 ERA, 1.25 WHIP and 17:3 K:BB in 16 innings.     • Carlos Estévez takes loss in 10th versus Astros
      Carlos Estévez dropped to 0-3 after allowing the automatic runner to score in the 10th against the Astros on Tuesday.

      Advice: Estévez had no cushion after the Angels failed to score in the top of the inning, and he was stuck facing the heart of the Astros order with Kyle Tucker on second. The decision was made to walk Yordan Alvarez to start the inning. Estevez then retired Alex Bregman before giving up a game-winning hit to Jeremy Peña. We’re not at all impressed by the job that Estévez is going, but this one doesn’t reflect badly on him.       Estevez allowed a run on two hits and a walk without striking out a batter over one inning, earning the save in Monday's 9-7 win over the Astros.

      Advice: Estevez's last two outings came in non-save situations after he blew a save May 10 versus the Royals. The closer is now 7-for-10 in save chances this season, though there are some warning signs reemerging after he struggled late in 2023. He's now at a 5.17 ERA, 1.15 WHIP and 17:2 K:BB through 15.2 innings this season.       Carlos Estévez picked up his seventh save despite giving up a run in the ninth Monday against the Astros.

      Advice: Estévez gave up two hits and a walk after the outstanding fortune of Jo Adell denying Yainer Diaz a possible homer or at least a double to begin the inning. Estévez is sporting a 5.17 ERA through 15 2/3 innings this season, and he’s lucky that neither Robert Stephenson (out for the season) or José Soriano (in the rotation) is currently an alternative in the closer’s role for the Angels.       Sewald secured the save Sunday against the Tigers by working a perfect ninth inning. He struck out one.

      Advice: Sewald needed just 10 pitches to get the job done and picked up a strikeout against Spencer Torkelson in the process. He's now converted all three of his save chances on the year and has tossed four straight scoreless innings while giving up just one hit since yielding a run in his season debut May 7.       Bednar walked one in a scoreless and hitless inning to earn the save in Sunday's 3-2 win over the Cubs.

      Advice: Bednar took the loss in Saturday's game versus the Cubs, but he bounced back with a scoreless inning for his 10th save of the season. The right-hander has given up three runs on seven hits and three walks over 8.1 innings in May, but he also has five saves in nine appearances this month.     • Paul Sewald closes out Tigers on Sunday afternoon
      Paul Sewald slammed the door on the Tigers on Sunday afternoon, working a scoreless ninth inning to preserve a two-run advantage.

      Advice: The 33-year-old hurler picked up his third save of the season for his efforts. He made it look awfully easy in this one, needing just 10 pitches (nine strikes) to get Wenceel Perez on a fly ball, Spencer Torkelson on strikes and Javier Baez on a pop out to second base to end it. On the season, Sewald now holds a 1.80 ERA, 0.60 WHIP and a 5/1 K/BB ratio across his first five innings of work. Rotoworld May 19, 4:18 pm
       
    • David Bednar slams door on Cubs on Sunday
      David Bednar slammed the door on the Cubs in the ninth inning on Sunday afternoon, preserving a one-run lead to earn his 10th save of the season.

      Advice: It hasn’t always been easy for Bednar this season, but he has been much better of late and made things look easy on Sunday. He got Christopher Morel on a pop out to shortstop and Ian Happ on a pop out to third base to start the inning before issuing a two-out walk to Michael Busch. Not to worry though, as he battled back to retire Patrick Wisdom to end it. Bednar will look to further improve upon his bloated 7.85 ERA his next time out. Rotoworld May 19, 2:07 pm
