    • Allows five earned runs in loss
      Castillo (6-8) suffered the loss Thursday, allowing five runs on eight hits and two walks over five innings against the Guardians. He struck out four.

      Advice: Castillo entered the fifth with a 3-2 lead but with two outs, a walk preceded a home run by Andres Gimenez, then another walk paved the way for a Josh Naylor double that saddled Castillo with five runs allowed and left him on the hook for the loss. Following Castillo's start on June 2, he was on a 10-game stretch of allowing no more than two earned runs. However, his last three starts have been more of a mixed bag, having allowed 12 earned runs over his last 16 innings (6.75 ERA) including five runs allowed in two of his last three starts.       Advice: The hope here is that Gallen will be ready to be activated, without requiring a minor league rehab assignment, after next week’s simulated game.       Sewald allowed one hit and struck out one during a scoreless ninth to collect the save Thursday against the Nationals.

      Advice: Sewald collected his first save in two weeks, having tossed just 1.1 innings over two appearances during that span prior to Thursday. Despite the inactivity, Sewald needed only eight pitches, tossing six for strikes to thwart the Nationals.     • Yandy Diaz homers as Rays defeat Twins in 10
      Yandy Diaz hit a two-run homer and doubled in an extra-inning loss to the Rays on Thursday.

      Advice: Diaz absolutely clobbered a two-run homer that went an estimated 439 feet to extend the Rays’ lead to 6-2 in the ninth. It turns out the Rays would need those runs, as Minnesota scored four to tie it in the bottom half of the frame.     • Luis Castillo struggles in start vs. Guardians
      Luis Castillo gave up five runs in five innings against the Guardians on Thursday while picking up a loss.

      Advice: Castillo allowed eight hits and two walks while striking out four. He gave up two homers in the outing; a solo blast by Will Brennan, and a two-run shot to Andres Gimenez in the fifth. It’s a disappointing outing for the right-hander, and it’s the second time in three outings he’s given up five runs in as many frames.     • Paul Sewald hurls scoreless frame for save
      Paul Sewald allowed a hit and picked up a strikeout in a scoreless inning to get a save against the Nationals on Thursday.

      Advice: Sewald has been sensational since returning from the injured list, and the scoreless inning lowers his ERA to a miniscule 0.71. The right-hander also has collected eight saves and will continue to operate as the Diamondbacks closer throughout 2024. Rotoworld Today, 12:31 pm
       
    • Another sim game coming next week
      Gallen (hamstring) is scheduled to throw another simulated game early next week and could be reinstated from the 15-day injured list shortly thereafter, Theo Mackie of The Arizona Republic reports.

      Advice: After tossing 31- and 37-pitch bullpen sessions last week, Gallen advanced to facing hitters in a simulated game Tuesday. Gallen's strained right hamstring apparently responded well to the workout, but the Diamondbacks will still have him toss another sim game during the upcoming week before signing off on his return to the rotation.       Megill struck out one in a perfect inning to earn the save in Wednesday's 2-0 win over the Angels.

      Advice: Megill needed just seven pitches (six strikes) against the middle of the Angels' order to close out this contest. He's pitched four of the last five days, but he's thrown just 12 pitches over his last two outings. He's now 15-for-16 in save chances with a 2.01 ERA, 1.12 WHIP and 27:7 K:BB through 22.1 innings this season. If Megill is unavailable for Thursday's series opener versus the Padres due to his recent workload, a potential save chance would likely go to Joel Payamps or Hoby Milner.
